CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO July 3, 2010 Evening No lights glowed in Hawke’s windows when they stepped out of the cab on the street in front of his home office. They had waited till almost midnight, when they were certain that Mrs. Seabrook and Martin had finally fallen asleep and couldn’t try to stop them. Cleo had called their mother that evening and weaseled out her own perspective on the key. “I don’t like talking about it,” their mom had said. “It’s enough to say that when Joseph took that key as his own secret burden, it split him and me apart in ways that never fully healed.” She wouldn’t offer more details, even after Cleo used her best wheedling methods.
