CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE July 6, 2010 Evening Calvin relayed Natalie’s message to Mrs. Seabrook. “She’s trying to help me,” he said, trying to keep defensiveness out of his tone. The clients had left for the day, and after eating a simple dinner with Cleo, he sat with Mrs. Seabrook and Cleo in the dining room around a bowl of Chex mix. Martin was still cleaning. The curtains had been sent to the dry cleaner, and the vacant windows made the room feel like a fishbowl. The evening air clung hot and sticky to everything. Calvin jostled the cubes in his iced coffee as his stomach sucked in caffeine like a parched beast.
