Chapter 11: Deliberate Push Away

977 Words
The Guardian of the Moonstone’s roar faded into the mist, but its echo lingered, sending a cold dread through every member of the group. Lira wasted no time, gesturing for the pack to form a protective circle around Eva, Kaelen, Seren, and the trembling pup. “We need to move,” she said, her voice sharp with urgency. “Its lair is deep in the western woods—we’ll take shelter in the pack’s hidden den, a place even the Shadow Veil can’t find.” Kaelen stumbled forward, his shoulder still oozing faint black venom, his amber eyes clouded with a mix of pain and resolve. He said nothing, only falling into step behind the pack, his gaze never once meeting Eva’s. The hidden den was a spacious cave tucked behind a waterfall, its entrance masked by swirling mist and overgrown ivy—exactly the kind of sanctuary Lira had promised. As the pack settled, Eva rushed to Kaelen’s side, her moonlight power glowing faintly in her palms. “Let me heal you,” she said, reaching for his shoulder. But Kaelen pulled away, his body tensing, his voice cold and distant. “Don’t touch me.” Eva froze, her heart stinging. The man who had once clung to her for strength, who had promised to fight beside her, was pushing her away—deliberately, cruelly. “Kaelen, your wound—” “I said don’t touch me,” he snapped, turning his back to her. His jaw was tight, his shoulders rigid, and Eva could see the faint tremor in his hands—the telltale sign that his curse was fighting to break free. Seren watched from the corner, his scaled face etched with concern. “He’s afraid,” Seren whispered to Eva, his voice low enough that Kaelen wouldn’t hear. “Afraid the Shadow Veil poison will make him lose control, afraid he’ll hurt you. Pushing you away is his way of protecting you.” Eva’s throat tightened—she understood, but the rejection still cut deep. Ella, still weak and pale, huddled against the cave wall, her eyes darting between Kaelen and Eva. “You’re wasting time,” she croaked, her voice laced with fear. “The Guardian will find us soon, and the first Moonstone fragment is hidden in the Whispering Grove—a place guarded by shadow creatures. Without Kaelen’s strength, we’ll never reach it.” Lira nodded, stepping forward to stand beside Eva. “She’s right. But we can’t force Kaelen to fight if he’s not ready.” Eva shook her head, her resolve hardening. She wouldn’t let his fear tear them apart—not when they were so close to saving his curse, to finding her mother. Just then, a shrill screech echoed outside the cave, followed by the sound of claws scraping against stone. The pack tensed, shifting to wolf form, but before they could react, a horde of shadowy creatures—twisted, formless beings with glowing red eyes—burst through the ivy, lunging toward the pup. Eva didn’t hesitate, her moonlight power surging to life, brighter than ever before. She stepped in front of the pup, weaving a silver barrier of light that slammed into the shadow creatures, burning them to smoke. But more kept coming, their numbers overwhelming. Kaelen watched from the sidelines, his fists clenched, his amber eyes flickering between red and gold. He could see Eva struggling, her light dimming as she fought to protect the pup and the pack. In that moment, his fear vanished—replaced by rage, by the primal urge to protect the woman he loved. With a low growl, he shifted to wolf form, his silver-gray fur glowing with a faint red hue, and lunged into the fray. He tore through the shadow creatures, his jaws clamping down on their smoky forms, while Eva’s light wrapped around him, merging with his strength. Together, they were unstoppable. Eva’s moonlight amplified Kaelen’s power, purging the last of the Shadow Veil poison from his system, while his ferocity cleared a path through the creatures. The pup joined them, its fur glowing silver, its small fangs sinking into the shadowy forms, amplifying their combined energy. Within minutes, the last shadow creature dissolved into smoke, and the cave fell silent. Eva collapsed to her knees, breathless but triumphant—this was her**, not just wielding power, but breaking through Kaelen’s walls, proving they were stronger together. Kaelen shifted back to human form, his shoulder fully healed, his amber eyes soft as he knelt beside her. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, taking her hand in his. “I thought pushing you away would keep you safe, but I was wrong. I need you—we all do.” Eva smiled, squeezing his hand, but before she could speak, Ella let out a terrified scream. Everyone turned to her, and their blood ran cold. Outside the cave, the waterfall had frozen solid, its surface reflecting a massive, shadowy figure—the Guardian of the Moonstone, its eyes glowing gold, its claws dripping with black venom. But worse, in its claws, it held a silver locket—engraved with the same symbol as the silver feather, the same symbol Eva had seen in her dreams of her mother. “Give me the pup and the moonlight descendant,” the Guardian rumbled, its voice shaking the cave. “Or I’ll shatter this locket—and your mother will be lost to the Shadow Veil forever.” Eva’s heart stopped. The locket—her mother’s locket. She had to get it back, but to do so, she would have to face a creature older than Mistwood itself. And as she looked at Kaelen, she saw the same resolve in his eyes—they would fight together, but this time, the stakes were higher than ever.
