Chapter 31

We immediately headed over to the infirmary together and when we arrived it looked like Diana had cried some more after I left. She was wiping her eyes as Ann and I walked over to her bed. “This is my friend Ann that I told you about, from the nunnery.” Ann smiled down at Diana and sat down in the chair. I pulled another one up alongside Ann. “So you grew up in the nunnery together?” Diana asked. That opened the floodgates for Ann to launch into a detailed account of our time at the nunnery together. I couldn’t tell if Diana was annoyed, but she was listening intently at least. Suddenly Ann began describing the knights and claimed that Sir Nolan was in love with me. “What?” I exclaimed, “Sir Nolan was in love with everyone! He flirted with any woman that was breathing.” Diana giggled a little. “Well, that’s true…but he flirted with you most often. Probably because you were so cold towards him, he felt like he needed to try harder.” Ann replied. I chuckled “Ann you’re delusional, he flirted with everyone equally, even the nuns!” “Oh do you remember the time he tried a line on Head Mother during dinner?” Ann asked. I saw Diana’s eyes widen with interest. I laughed and said “Oh yes, how could I forget. He told her that she wore her nun habit the best out of anyone he had ever seen. And she smacked him so hard in the back of his head that he almost choked on his food. Never ate green beans again after that.” Diana burst out laughing, which made Ann and I laugh even harder. “You know he never flirted with anyone again after you left” Ann said. “What? Now I think you’re lying. Flirting is like breathing for Sir Nolan.” “No it’s true! After he saw you fight, something in him changed. He became deadly serious and even Head Mother inquired after his health after a week or two.” I was shocked. “Well he did seem a little different when we returned to the nunnery to get you. But I just thought it was because of Halvor’s intimidating behavior towards him.” “Wait, you left the nunnery without Ann?” I nodded and explained what happened and Ann filled in the parts about her and Eric. “Wow, it’s just like the book you’re reading me” Diana said when we had finished. Ann furrowed her brows in confusion. “Your story with Eric is just like this book The Wind in the Trees. You faced many obstacles before being reunited.” Ann smiled and I said “How do you know the prince and princess end up together?” Diana sheepishly said “I might have read the rest of the book after you left yesterday.” We all laughed and then Ann suddenly said “Oh my, it’s getting late! I have to get home to make supper!” I looked outside and realized the sun was almost getting ready to set. “I suppose I should go too” I said. “Yes I’m sure the king will miss you if you’re not in the dining hall soon” Ann added. I rolled my eyes “I doubt that he would even notice if I wasn’t there. Besides he’s always at meetings these days anyway.” “Well maybe your story is like The Wind in the Trees too” Ann replied, nudging me a little. I chuckled and turned to Diana. “We’ll come visit you tomorrow too” I said. Ann nodded in agreement. Diana grasped Ann’s hand and said “Thank you.” Ann replied “Of course, what are friends for?” Then she turned and hurried home. Diana sat there in awe and murmured “friend.” I bent down and gave her a hug before reluctantly heading back to the castle. I decided to peek into the dining hall to see if Halvor was there. He wasn’t and I wasn’t very surprised. But since I was there I thought I should at least eat something. I went and sat down at the head table and a maid quickly went to fetch me some food. Everyone stood and bowed or curtsied as I sat down, then resumed happily chatting away with each other. It made me wish I had someone to talk to during supper. The maid quickly returned with my food and placed it in front of me. I began to eat when I noticed everyone in the dining hall suddenly stand. Halvor walked into the dining hall and I saw him heading over to me. My heart sank a little when I realized Gala was right behind him.
