When I heard the sharp tap on the window pane I knew exactly what had caused it even before I turned around. I was brewing coffee in the kitchen and the windows overlook the bay and the ocean beyond. The former resident fed the pigeons every morning and some still came to see if there were any crumbs. Most of the time I completely forgot to put anything out and they would then fly away. I didn’t really want to encourage them anyway. But when I turned and looked I knew there was something different about this one. I slid open the window and slowly reached out my hand. There was a message strapped to its leg but not in one of those canisters that pigeons usually carry.
