CHAMELEONS I remembered that I was once a sailor shipwrecked off the coast of an uncharted island. I swam ashore and crawled up the beach and lay to rest and recover in the rising sun. Then I opened my eyes and saw figures clustered around me and they all looked like shipwrecked sailors. In fact they were all identical to me and I wondered if I had become a castaway on an island of mirrors. So I stood and began heading inland and— No. Something isn’t quite right with this memory. I wasn’t a sailor on oceans of water but a space explorer; and my ship was a spaceship. It had developed engine trouble and so I landed on the nearest hospitable world. No man had ever set foot on this particular planet before, but when I opened the hatch and lowered the ramp and stepped onto the surface, I saw
