Chapter 3 – Living with Guys  [Aubrey’s POV]  “Hey, Aubrey,” Ryan whispered. “Miss me?” “Back off,” I threatened. He always joked around like this. I hated it. He didn’t move an inch with his face still half-resting on my neck. I could feel his warm breath on my bare skin. “I said back off, Ryan.” Ryan Carter—my ex-boyfriend who was a douche. He had brown hair, brown eyes and perfectly tanned skin. He was also a surfer which made some girls around him drool. I often remembered how girls tried to take him away from me when we were still dating. Unfortunately, he let himself get taken away. I sincerely hated him for it. “Where’s your slutty cheerleader?” I wondered. “I dumped her. I realized that I still love you, Aubrey,” “Back off,” I pushed him on the chest but he was way stronger than me. He took hold of both of my wrists and pinned them on the sides of my face. “Admit it, Aubrey,” he muttered. “You still love me,” he slammed his lips onto mine. I hated being forced to do something out of my will. This was different from what happened with Julian—I didn’t like this. I struggled to pull away from him but with my head resting on the wall, all I could do move my head to the side. The door of the room opened which startled the both of us. It was one of my new housemates—one who I thought hated me based on the way he acted last night. “Forcing a girl, brutally,” he spoke up. “That’s what scums do, isn’t it? Nobody wants to kiss you right now, Carter?” He was calm. He did not mind about getting in trouble with one of the most popular students in school. “Shut up, Roberts,” Ryan spat. “Get out now or do you want me to report your harassment to the principal? You know that expulsion is a huge price to pay,” he threatened and my ex-boyfriend bought it. Ryan stormed outside unhappily, leaving me alone with the person who saved me. “Thanks, Gabriel,” I said. “Sure,” Gabriel Roberts looked frightening but he was handsome nevertheless. I went outside of the room which I realized was Gabriel’s homeroom that was why he walked in earlier. I spotted Alice, one of my friends, in the hallway. She was casually wearing her jeans with her blouse. Her blonde hair looked soft and vibrant which was a good match for her blue eyes. “Where have you been?!” she demanded. “We’ve been looking for you everywhere!” I kept silent about what Ryan pulled earlier. I just made an excuse that I woke up late which she believed. “Where’s Raven and Amy?” “Hey, bitches,” speak of the devil, Raven’s voice came from behind me. She had red highlights on her black hair which made her more distinct than the other students. She was wearing her black pair of jeans, black shirt, leather bracelets—the usual—and she had a thick eyeliner on her lower lid. Many people viewed her as weird but for us, she was just different. She was awesome in her own way. “Don’t say bad words too much,” Amy warned. She arrived together with Raven. Her olive skin tone and brown eyes looked great. She was a good girl—an honest individual who would tell you what was wrong once she saw you. It was her dream to become a fashion designer someday. She possessed the talent judging from the sketches that she made. “Let’s get changed,” Alice suggested. Good thing about our class schedule, we have Physical Education as our first subject. It meant that we would have energy to do physical activities since we just woke up. Lastly, we had Home Economics. I could pass that class even with my eyes closed. We followed Alice’s suggestion and went to the girls’ changing room. *** Mr. Kirkpatrick, our Physical Education teacher, made us run ten laps around the gymnasium. Also, my class shared the space. The basketball varsities were also there. They watched us and it was hard not to feel insecure. Philip, my new housemate and the playboy one, was intently looking at me. After running, we were given a two-minute break before we proceeded to do the warm-up exercise. The teacher informed us that we were going to learn how to play basketball today that was why the varsities were here. The boys in my class cheered but the girls—we were the least enthusiastic about this lesson. My housemate was the team captain of the basketball team. Philip, together with half of the basketball varsities would teach the girls while the other half would teach the boys. We lined up and I came in last. Each person was qualified to shoot the ball. After I mustered up my strength to shoot the ball, that was when I realized that I sucked. I sucked the most. Even Zane, the flirtatious nerd, had a better aim than me. I didn’t have any athletic bone in my body. The varsities made me shoot the ball a couple of times but I got nowhere near the hoop. Zane and I used to be bestfriends back in middle school. However, good things indeed fell apart. We went to separate groups and had different friends. We remained friends but not that close anymore. I still remembered Zane. She did not do well in sports. So, I thought that I sucked the most because—you know—I sucked behind her. I unintentionally caught Mr. Kirkpatrick’s attention. He looked frustrated like he thought that I was doing this on purpose. No one dared laugh at me. I had this impression that even though I did something terribly, they would just ignore it because of my status. Sometimes, it was good to be popular. “Tanner,” Mr. Kirkpatrick called. I walked to his direction until I stood in front of him. “You better do something about your skills or else, I will have no choice but to fail you,” It wasn’t an empty threat and to be honest, I grew nervous. I did well in other subjects. I did not want to fail Physical Education. “I’m not athletic,” I reasoned. “That’s why I’m going to assign a varsity to teach you, Tanner,” the teacher eyed me. “Maybe you need to learn from the best,” “Okay…?” “Stone! Come here!” Mr. Kirkpatrick called Philip. Of course, he was the best. He was the team captain. However, did I really need to learn how to play basketball that much? “This is a requirement before you graduate, Tanner. I’ll excuse the both of you for your second to fourth classes,” Could he really do that? Was Mr. Kirkpatrick the boss around here or something? “And you, Stone—you need to teach Tanner here how to play basketball or I’ll remove you from your captain position. You got that?” Mr. Kirkpatrick seemed harsh. “Yes, sir,” “You’re going to have this gym for four hours. No one will bother your training,” Mr. Kirkpatrick added. The bell rang and my classmates went back to the changing rooms to take their showers. My friends eyed me which meant that they were going to see me at lunch and I nodded in response. The teacher went outside as well. He was probably going to take his nap. Philip and I were the only ones left inside the gymnasium. We were alone and I couldn’t help but notice when he chuckled. “This is great, Aubrey. No classes,” “Are you making an excuse to mock my performance?” I glared at him. “No,” he answered. “Let’s start,” he dribbled the ball and shot it. The ball went inside the net. He ran to catch the ball and tossed it to me. Luckily, I managed to catch it this time. “You try it,” “I can’t. I suck,” “Come on,” he pursued. I took my shot but it did not have enough power. I hated this freaking sport. “See?” I whined like a little kid. “Okay. So, you really can’t play,” Philip shrugged. “It’s not a big deal. You just need to learn enough to pass the subject,” he caught the ball again and walked toward me. He went behind me after passing me the ball. He guided both of my hands with his so we were both holding the ball. I could feel his breath on the back of my neck. I could feel him panting. I could feel his sweat. I could feel everything. We shot the ball and it went inside the net. I could not help but laugh. I did it! Well—not alone but I still did it! Philip did nothing. While our body remained close to each other, he rested his head on top of my right shoulder. His hands that were holding mine led it downward. He started kissed my neck from behind and I couldn’t find myself struggling. He then inserted his hands inside my shirt. Great—First, Julian—and now, Philip. Just great.
