THE ANNOUNCEMENT

CHAPTER 2: THE EXCURSION ANNOUNCEMENT Monday morning arrived with an energy the school hadn’t felt in days. The hallways were alive with noise—students laughing loudly, calling out to friends, sharing stories from the weekend as they hurried to class. Conversations bounced from corner to corner, mixing into one chaotic rhythm that somehow felt exciting. Everyone seemed lighter. Happier. Alive. Everyone except Zara. She walked through the corridor quietly, her fingers curled tightly around the strap of her bag while her eyes moved carefully around her surroundings. Even after several days at the school, she still felt out of place. Like she didn’t fully belong there yet. Every laugh around her sounded distant. Every smile felt unfamiliar. And no matter how normal things looked, something inside her refused to relax. The bell rang suddenly through the building. Assembly. Almost immediately, students began rushing toward the assembly ground with excitement. Zara followed behind them slowly. Carefully. Like she was walking into something uncertain. ⸻ At the assembly ground, students arranged themselves into rows while teachers moved around trying to keep everyone organized. Zara found a quiet spot and stood still, hoping nobody would notice her. But somehow, that never seemed to happen anymore. Caleb stood a few rows away, occasionally glancing in her direction like he was making sure she was okay. And Ethan… Ethan stood close enough for her to feel his presence without even looking at him. No touching. No words. Just awareness. Zara kept her eyes fixed ahead, but she could still feel it—that quiet attention he carried around her. Not intense. Not obvious. But there. And for some reason, it unsettled her. The assembly continued normally at first. Morning prayers. Announcements. Reminders about assignments and school rules. Students barely paid attention. Then the principal stepped forward. Immediately, the atmosphere shifted. The murmuring slowly died down as students straightened with curiosity. “I have an important announcement,” the principal began. That single sentence was enough. Excitement spread instantly across the assembly ground. “There will be a two-day excursion at the end of this week.” For one second, complete silence filled the air. Then suddenly— The entire assembly ground exploded with excitement. Cheers echoed loudly. Students screamed happily, grabbing onto their friends while excited conversations broke out everywhere at once. “Oh my God, finally!” “This is going to be crazy!” “I’m bringing my camera!” Even some teachers laughed at the students’ reactions. The energy became impossible to ignore. But Zara remained still. Completely still. On the outside, she looked calm. Inside, however, something tightened painfully in her chest. The principal continued speaking. “The excursion location will be Waterfall Park.” The moment she heard the name, her fingers twitched slightly by her side. A strange feeling settled deep inside her stomach. Uneasy. Heavy. Wrong. She couldn’t explain it. But something about the trip instantly made her uncomfortable. “You’re not excited?” Zara stiffened slightly at the voice beside her. Ethan. She didn’t look at him. “Mind your business,” she replied sharply. Not loud enough to cause attention. But cold enough. Caleb noticed the tension immediately. “Hey,” he interrupted lightly, trying to ease the atmosphere. “Relax.” But Zara was already stepping away. The assembly had barely ended before she disappeared into the crowd, walking much faster than usual. Like she was trying to escape her own thoughts. ⸻ The rest of the day passed in a blur. Teachers spoke. Students laughed. Classes changed. But Zara barely noticed any of it. One thing stayed stuck in her mind the entire day. Waterfall Park. The more she thought about it, the more uncomfortable she felt. She didn’t trust the feeling sitting heavily inside her chest. And by the end of the day, she quietly made up her mind. She wasn’t going. ⸻ That evening at home, Caleb could barely hide his excitement. “Two whole days,” he said excitedly while pacing around the living room. “This trip is going to be amazing.” Mrs. Collins smiled warmly at his enthusiasm. “That sounds fun,” she said. “You both should go.” Their father nodded in agreement from his chair. “It’ll be good for you.” Zara sat quietly at the dining table, pushing food around her plate without eating much. Nobody noticed her silence. Or maybe they did and simply didn’t know what to say anymore. ⸻ The next morning, the excitement around school had somehow doubled. Excursion forms were everywhere. Students crowded around classrooms discussing seating arrangements, outfits, snacks, music playlists, and who they planned to spend time with during the trip. It became impossible to avoid. Everyone was talking about it. Everyone except Zara. She sat quietly in class, pretending to focus while her thoughts spiraled elsewhere. Crowds. Noise. No privacy. And worse… Too many people around her at once. Too many chances for something to go wrong. The thought alone exhausted her. And then there was Ethan. For some reason, knowing he would also be there made her even more unsettled. She hated that. ⸻ By the final day for submission, almost every student had registered for the trip. Almost every student. Mr. David noticed immediately. “Zara,” he called gently after class. “Can you stay behind for a minute?” She hesitated before walking toward his desk. Inside his office, his expression remained calm and patient like always. “You haven’t submitted your form yet,” he said softly. Zara looked down without responding. “You should consider going,” he continued. “Experiences like this can help.” Still silence. Mr. David studied her quietly before speaking again. “I’m not trying to force you,” he assured her. “But is there a reason you don’t want to go?” Zara’s fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her bag. She wanted to explain it. The anxiety. The fear. That strange feeling she couldn’t shake. But the words refused to come out. After a while, Mr. David sighed softly. “Just think about it, okay?” She nodded once. That was all. ⸻ Later that afternoon, Zara walked through the hallway alone while checking her class schedule. “Zara.” She recognized the voice immediately. But she kept walking. A few seconds later, Ethan caught up beside her easily. “Have you registered for the trip?” he asked. No answer. She continued walking. “You’re avoiding the question.” Still nothing. Ethan frowned slightly as he watched her. “You really don’t want to go that badly?” Zara stopped walking so suddenly that he nearly walked past her. Finally, she looked at him. “You ask too many questions.” Her voice wasn’t angry. Just tired. For a moment, Ethan said nothing. Then quietly “You look nervous every time someone mentions the trip.” Zara’s chest tightened instantly. She hated how observant he was. “I’m fine,” she replied quickly. Ethan held her gaze for a few seconds longer than necessary. Like he knew she was lying But surprisingly, he didn’t argue. “Okay,” he said softly. And somehow, that calm response unsettled her more than pressure would have Without another word, she walked away. But she could still feel his eyes following her long after she left. ⸻ That night, Mrs. Collins stepped quietly into Zara’s room. Zara looked up from her bed. “I heard you still haven’t registered for the excursion,” her mother said gently. Zara looked away immediatel, “Why?” No response. Mrs. Collins sighed softly. “You can’t avoid everything forever, Zara.” That sentence hurt more than she expected. Because deep down… part of her feared her mother was right. After waiting a few seconds for an answer that never came, Mrs. Collins quietly left the room. The silence afterward felt unbearable. ⸻ The day of the excursion arrived faster than Zara expected. Students were instructed to gather at school by 4 PM before departure. Caleb had been excited since morning. His bag was already packed hours earlier, yet he still kept checking everything repeatedly. “Snacks… charger… headphones…” He moved around the room restlessly while talking to himself. Zara sat silently on her bed watching him. The excitement in the room never reached her. If anything, the uneasy feeling inside her had only gotten worse. Then suddenly— The doorbell rang. Caleb looked up immediately. “I’ll get it,” Zara said quietly before he could move. She stood up slowly and walked toward the front door. Her heartbeat felt strangely heavy. The moment she opened the door— She froze. Completely. For three long seconds, she couldn’t breathe properly. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t even think. Because standing right in front of her… was the last person she expected to see.
