THE TRIP

CHAPTER 4: THE TRIP “Caleb!” Zara’s voice cut through the noise near the school gate. He turned immediately. “What is it?” She pointed ahead quickly, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Is that not the school bus over there?” Just beyond the gate sat a smaller bus, partly hidden behind parked cars and moving students. Its engine was already running impatiently. Caleb squinted before realization crossed his face. “The late bus.” Relief washed through both of them almost instantly. Without wasting another second, they grabbed their bags and hurried toward it. ⸻ The bus was nearly full. Students filled almost every seat, their voices blending into one loud, restless atmosphere. Some were laughing loudly. Others argued playfully over seating arrangements while music leaked faintly from someone’s headphones nearby. The moment Zara stepped inside, the warmth and noise hit her immediately. Only three seats remained. Two at the back. One near the front. Before they could move further inside, one of the teachers stopped them. “Names and seat numbers,” she said firmly while holding a file against her chest. The three of them answered between breaths, still slightly exhausted from rushing. The teacher flipped through the pages slowly. The sound of paper turning somehow felt louder than the noise around them. “I see Ethan…” she murmured while scanning the list. A short pause followed. “…Zara.” Zara’s fingers tightened slightly around her bag strap. “You two take the back seats.” Then— “Caleb. Front seat.” Caleb immediately looked back at Zara. The concern in his eyes was obvious. But he still managed a reassuring smile before moving toward the front of the bus. Zara hated how suddenly alone she felt. A few moments later, the doors shut. The engine rumbled louder beneath them. Then the bus slowly pulled away from the school. ⸻ Inside, the atmosphere remained lively. Students exchanged snacks across seats while conversations bounced loudly through the bus. Someone near the middle started singing badly enough to make everyone laugh. Life surrounded her from every direction. But Zara still felt disconnected from it all. She sat beside the window quietly, her shoulder resting lightly against the glass. Outside, the city moved quickly around them. Cars sped past. Roadside sellers waved bottled drinks at traffic. Children ran barefoot across dusty streets while evening sunlight stretched across buildings in soft gold. But inside her mind, everything felt strangely slow. Like she was waiting for something she couldn’t explain. Or maybe… something she didn’t want to face. ⸻ Beside her, Ethan tried focusing on the movie playing on his phone. Tried. But failed. His attention kept drifting back toward her instead. The way she stared outside without really seeing anything. The way she sat slightly distant from everyone around her. The quietness around her didn’t feel peaceful. It felt heavy. After watching her for a while, he finally spoke. “Are you always this quiet?” Zara didn’t look at him immediately. Then quietly— “Are you always this talkative?” A few nearby students overheard and laughed softly. Ethan smiled. “It depends on who I’m talking to.” That made her glance at him briefly. Only for a second. But long enough for him to notice. Then she looked away again. Still… the silence between them no longer felt awkward. Just aware. ⸻ Time passed slowly as the road stretched endlessly ahead. The steady movement of the bus, mixed with the low hum of conversations and music, slowly became calming. Zara didn’t realize when her eyes began to feel heavy. She tried to stay awake. Really tried. But exhaustion eventually won. Her head tilted slightly. Then again. Each bump in the road made it shift awkwardly before she finally drifted off completely. Ethan noticed almost immediately. At first, he simply watched quietly as her head kept slipping sideways every few minutes. Then carefully— almost hesitantly— he adjusted himself slightly and gently guided her head onto his lap. Zara didn’t wake up. She only shifted faintly before settling comfortably again, her breathing softer now. Ethan froze for a second afterward. Like even he wasn’t sure why he had done it. But he didn’t move her away. Instead, he stayed perfectly still. Watching her. Sleeping, she looked completely different. Less guarded. Less defensive. Peaceful in a way she never allowed herself to be while awake. A loose strand of hair had fallen across her face. Without thinking much about it, Ethan reached out carefully and brushed it aside. The moment he did, he immediately stopped himself. As though he had crossed a line without permission. Still… he didn’t pull away. ⸻ Minutes passed quietly like that. Soft. Still. The kind of closeness neither of them would have acknowledged out loud. ⸻ About ten minutes before arrival, Zara slowly woke up. Her eyes fluttered open sleepily. At first, nothing made sense. Then realization hit. She was lying on Ethan’s lap. Her entire body tensed instantly. Zara sat upright so quickly that Ethan blinked in surprise. For a moment, she simply stared ahead, trying to process everything. Ethan said nothing. He only watched her calmly. Zara adjusted herself immediately, turning toward the window as if nothing had happened. But her breathing had become uneven. And the faint warmth in her cheeks betrayed her completely. Neither of them spoke about it. After a while, Ethan broke the silence carefully. “So… what are your plans for this excursion?” Zara turned slightly toward him. Looked at him. Then looked away again, No answer. The conversation died before it could even begin. But oddly enough, Ethan didn’t seem annoyed. If anything, he looked more curious. ⸻ Suddenly— her phone vibrated. Once. Then again. Zara frowned slightly before reaching into her bag. Two missed calls, Unknown number. A strange feeling settled immediately in her chest. Slowly, she opened the message underneath. One sentence. “You can’t run from it.” Her breath caught. The warmth inside the bus suddenly felt colder. Her fingers tightened around the phone as her heartbeat slowed painfully. Ahead of them, Caleb remained distracted, completely unaware. But Ethan noticed. Not the message. Her reaction. The sudden shift in her posture. The tension returning to her face. The silence around her deepened instantly. Something had reached her. Even here. Even now. And for the first time since the journey began— Zara no longer felt like she was simply heading toward a school trip. She felt like something was waiting for her there
