With his growing reputation, Li Feng’s name soon reached ears beyond Zhao Yun’s camp. Unbeknownst to him, a greater challenge loomed on the horizon.
Days later, a messenger arrived under a flag of truce, bearing an invitation from none other than Cao Cao himself. Zhao Yun frowned as he read the message. "Cao Cao wishes to meet you, Li Feng."
"Me?" Li Feng was surprised. "What does he want?"
"Cao Cao is no ordinary warlord. He values talent, and he tests those he cannot control. If he sees you as a threat, he may try to eliminate you." Zhao Yun's voice was grave. "This meeting could be a trap."
After much deliberation, they decided that Li Feng would attend—but under the guise of a simple scholar, not a military strategist. Accompanied by a small escort, he arrived at the grand command tent where Cao Cao awaited him.
"You are the one they call Li Feng?" Cao Cao’s piercing gaze studied him. "Your strategies have turned the tides of battle. But I wonder, do you truly understand war?"
A servant placed a Go board between them. "Humor me with a game," Cao Cao said, a knowing smile on his lips.
Li Feng understood immediately. This was no mere game—it was a test of wits. As the match progressed, Li Feng played aggressively at first, mirroring the bold maneuvers he used in battle. But Cao Cao was a master of deception, sacrificing pieces to set traps. Sensing the danger, Li Feng adapted, shifting to a defensive strategy while subtly preparing a counterattack.
After a tense hour, Cao Cao laughed heartily. "Excellent! You saw through my feints. Many brilliant men fall because they act too soon or too late. You, however, adjusted without hesitation."
Li Feng offered a humble smile. "War, like Go, is about adaptation."
Cao Cao studied him once more before waving his hand. "You are a rare talent, Li Feng. If ever Zhao Yun fails you, remember—my doors are always open."
Li Feng bowed, knowing this was both an offer and a warning. As he left the tent, he exhaled. He had passed Cao Cao’s test, but a greater storm was brewing on the horizon.
