Chapter 4

I entered the cafeteria, walking straight toward the table where my guys were already seated. “Hey, Logan,” Dylan called out with his usual grin. “You want something?” Zack asked between bites of his burger. “No,” I muttered. “You don’t have to take your bad mood out on us,” Ace said flatly, crossing his arms. I glared at him. “What are you talking about?” He leaned back, unbothered. “We’re not blind. You’ve been storming around like someone pissed in your coffee.” As usual, Ace wasn’t wrong. His blunt honesty was both helpful and infuriating. “I met my mate today,” I said, surprising even myself. Dylan nearly dropped his drink. “What? Seriously? That’s huge!” “I guess we’re getting our Luna soon,” Zack said, his eyes lighting up. “But…” Ace cut in, watching me carefully. “There’s a catch.” I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. The frustration was probably written all over my face. Then the cafeteria doors opened—and her scent hit me like a wave of roses and rain. I snapped my head toward the entrance. There she was. Emily. Her posture was stiff, her eyes wide. My wolf stirred violently at the sight of her, sensing her rising panic. She turned suddenly and bolted. I didn’t think—I moved. Fast. I ignored the shouts of my name from behind me, following her down the hallway. Her scent guided me until I found her, slumped against the lockers, breathing hard, her body trembling. And then she began to fall. I caught her just in time. “Emily,” I said urgently, brushing the hair from her face. “Hey—wake up.” She didn’t respond. Her skin was clammy, and her breaths shallow. Shit. I scooped her up in my arms and sprinted to the infirmary, not caring who saw. The doctor rushed to help as I laid her down. “Just a panic attack,” he said after checking her. “She’ll be okay.” Relief hit me like a wave. I dropped into the chair beside her, only to realize—she was still holding my hand. I didn’t move. I just sat there, staring at the girl fate had tied me to. My mate. And I still hadn’t even seen her whole face. --- Bonus Chapter — EMILY’S P.O.V. I woke up in an unfamiliar bed, the bright white lights above me stinging my eyes. I blinked, trying to clear the fog in my head. “You’re in the school infirmary,” a soft voice said. A nurse stood beside me, clipboard in hand. “How did I get here?” I asked, my voice hoarse. “A boy brought you in,” she said, a knowing smile on her lips. A boy? I sat up slowly, my head still spinning a little. “I—I passed out?” She nodded. “Panic attack. Nothing serious, but you should rest.” I gave her a tight smile and whispered, “Thank you.” Then I walked out slowly, heart still pounding, wondering if the boy was him. --- LOGAN’S P.O.V. I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, gripping the edge of the sink so tightly my knuckles turned white. What the hell is wrong with me? All I could see were those ocean-blue eyes. Hear the softness of her voice. Feel the way my chest had squeezed when I saw her collapse. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. My phone buzzed. I picked it up without looking. “What?” “Where are you?” Ace’s voice asked. “I’m coming,” I said, hanging up. When I returned to the cafeteria, everyone at the table turned to look at me. “So, we heard you found your mate,” Diane said, arching a brow. “Yeah, so?” I replied, sliding into my seat. “You don’t look excited,” Teresa noted, folding her arms. I let out a bitter laugh. “She’s a human. And she’s got a scar on her face. What’s exciting about that?” Diane’s expression darkened. “That’s a weak excuse, and you know it.” I shot her a look. “The elders won’t accept a human Luna.” “Since when do you give a damn about what the elders think?” she challenged. “Unless you just don’t like her.” “Diane,” I growled, letting the alpha edge into my voice. “Enough. I don’t want anyone spreading this. Am I clear?” “But—” “No buts. Am I clear?” “Yes, Alpha,” they chorused. I hated using the Alpha tone on my friends. But this… this wasn’t just about me anymore. --- DIANE’S P.O.V. Thirty minutes earlier… Teresa and I had just been walking toward the guys when Logan sprinted past us, ignoring every call of his name. “What’s his deal?” Teresa muttered. We turned to the boys at the table, who didn’t even flinch. “I’m not talking to myself,” I snapped. “Leave it alone,” Dylan said with a smirk. “It’s obvious.” “What’s obvious?” I asked. Zack sighed. “She’s his mate.” “What?” Teresa and I said in unison. “Girl in the hoodie. That’s her,” Ace added, barely looking up from his phone. My mind reeled. Logan Pierce had a mate—and she was the quiet, hoodie-wearing new girl? The bell rang, but we stayed behind. I made Ace call Logan. He picked up on the third ring. “What do you want?” “Where are you?” Ace asked. “I’m coming.” Click. A few minutes later, Logan walked in, all brooding silence. “So, we heard you found your mate,” I said. His answer drained the excitement from my veins. “She’s human. And scarred. So tell me, where’s the joy in that?” I stared at him, stunned. “You think that’s a good reason to push her away?” I asked. “I think it’s a realistic one,” he snapped. “You know the elders—” “Don’t control you,” I interrupted. “Unless you just don’t want her.” “Enough, Diane.” I met his glare evenly until he dropped his alpha tone. “I don’t want rumors. Am I clear?” We all answered the same: “Yes, Alpha.” --- Thirty Minutes Later… After the guys left, Teresa and I lingered behind. “So what now?” she asked. “We obey,” I said. “You mean… ignore her?” I smiled slyly. “No. He said not to spread the news. He never said we couldn’t talk to her.” Teresa’s eyes widened. “Ahhh, Diane. This is why you’re the smart one.” I grinned. “Let’s go to class.” The fun was just beginning.
