Chapter 16As the train rocked northward through the Shenandoah Valley toward Richmond, I was able to reminisce about growing up as the son of Archibald Marcellus Haynes. As a child, I was never spoiled. My father had been self-made and he wanted me to be the same. At the time I thought I was deprived, not receiving the material possessions that so many of my friends received from their fathers who were not nearly as influential as my father. For example, he would not purchase a new Schwinn bike for me although all my friends had gotten one. Instead, he said, if I wanted one, he’d make me a loan.
