The Poisoned Gift

602 Words
The morning sun hit the glass towers of the city, but for Adrian, the world was still trapped in a dark, suffocating fog. He hadn't slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Serene’s emerald gaze—so much like the woman he had buried in the sea. "Adrian, you're not even listening to me!" Clara snapped, slamming her designer handbag on the breakfast table. "The scandal yesterday has ruined our engagement announcement. My father is furious!" Adrian looked at her, his eyes bloodshot. Clara was beautiful, yes, but she was shallow—a pawn he had chosen only to strengthen his social standing. "Fix it, Clara. Use your PR team. I have bigger problems," he growled. Clara stormed out of the mansion, fuming. She needed a distraction, an ally. And as if by fate, her phone buzzed. It was an invitation to a private, exclusive spa session from a "mysterious admirer of her style." Two hours later, Clara was reclining in a luxurious silk robe at the city’s most expensive wellness club. The steam was fragrant with lilies. "I hope the treatment is to your liking, Miss Clara," a voice smooth as velvet echoed through the room. Clara opened her eyes to see Serene Lance standing there, looking like a dream in a cream-colored power suit. Clara sat up, defensive but curious. "You? The woman from the gala? Why am I here?" Serene smiled, a soft, seemingly kind expression that didn't reach her cold eyes. "I noticed how stressed you looked last night. A woman like you shouldn't have to carry the weight of a man’s mistakes. Especially a man like Adrian." Serene sat down across from her and handed her a beautifully wrapped gift box. Inside was a necklace of black pearls—rare, expensive, and haunting. "Why are you being so nice to me?" Clara asked, her greed warring with her suspicion. "Because I hate to see talent and beauty wasted on a sinking ship," Serene whispered, leaning in. "Adrian is being investigated by the international boards. His fall won't just be financial, Clara. It will be criminal. If you stay by his side, you’ll go down with him. Your family’s name will be dragged through the mud." Clara’s face went pale. "What are you saying?" "I'm saying... I can help you," Serene’s voice was like a siren’s song. "I'm looking for a new face for my global fashion brand. Someone with your... spark. But I can't have my brand associated with a man like Adrian Malhotra. If you help me gather some internal documents from his study—just small things—I can ensure your family's assets are protected when he falls. And you? You'll be the new Queen of the industry." Clara looked at the black pearls. She looked at Serene’s confident smile. The seed of betrayal was planted. "He keeps his private files in a safe in the library," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "He thinks I don't know the code." Serene patted her hand gently. "Good girl. Do this, and you won't just survive the storm, Clara. You'll be the one controlling the lightning." As Serene walked out of the spa, Julian was waiting in the car. "Did she take the bait?" Serene leaned back, her face turning into a mask of ice. "Greed is a much more powerful motivator than love, Julian. By tomorrow, I’ll have the keys to his safe. And by the end of the week, Adrian Malhotra will have nowhere to hide."
