A New Distraction

Mabel had never been to an event quite like this before. The Sinclair Enterprises Annual Client and Partner Appreciation Gala was dripping with extravagance, from the Beautiful chandeliers casting glittering reflections across the room to the soft buzz from the live orchestra band playing in the background. The who’s who of the business world mingled, dressed in designer gowns and sharp tuxedos, they chatted, occasionally breaking into polite laughter, with the sound of champagne glasses clinking in the background. Standing near the edge of the room, Mabel adjusted her Royal blue gown, a last-minute purchase that somehow fit her figure perfectly. She felt out of place among the elite, but she was determined to carry herself with grace and confidence .After all, she was here as Richard Sinclair’s secretary, though it felt more like she was his accessory for the evening. Richard impromptu brought her the notice about the event, casually mentioning it as they wrapped up work the day before. As usual, he’d provided no details about what to expect. Now, standing in the Elegance of the ballroom, Mabel felt the weight of every curious glance that came her way. Richard was in his element, moving through the crowd like a king among his subjects. He radiated a calm authority in his well-tailored black suit, his expression as unreadable as ever. Mabel couldn’t help but notice how many women turned to watch him as he passed. She tried to focus on the event and not on her employer’s commanding presence. She moved toward a quieter corner so she could pick up a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter, hoping to avoid unnecessary attention. “Now what’s a beautiful woman like you doing all alone in a corner?” The voice was soft and pleasant, with just the right amount of charm that made her look up. In front of her stood a tall man with a warm, inviting smile and a spark of mischief in his golden-brown eyes. His light, sandy hair was casually styled, and he wore a dark blue suit that fit him perfectly, showing that he knew how to stand out and make an impact. Mabel smiled politely. “Just taking in the atmosphere Sirr..." as she stammered, battling wether to address him as Sir or any less. “I'm Nicholas Kane,” he said, extending his hand. “And you are?” “Mabel Lexington,” she replied, shaking his hand. His grip was firm but not overpowering, his warmth stood in stark contrast to Richard’s usual coldness. "Well, Mabel Lexington, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Are you here with someone, or do I get to claim the honor of your company for the evening?” he calmly asked her. His confidence was almost dizzying, but Mabel found herself relaxing in his presence. “I’m here with my boss, actually,” she said. Nicholas raised an eyebrow. “Your boss must be a fool to leave you alone like this.” She laughed, the sound surprising even herself. “Let’s just say he’s...preoccupied.” They fell into easy conversation and in no time they were effortlessly flowing with each other, Nicholas proving to be as charming as he was good-looking. He asked about her interests, listened intently as she spoke, and even managed to make her laugh with his light-hearted jokes about the pomp and pretentiousness of the event. For the first time in a long while, Mabel felt seen—truly seen. As the evening went on, they found themselves standing closer, their laughter drawing a few glances from nearby guests. Mabel couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so at ease in such a high-pressure setting. Just as they were exchanging numbers, a sudden shift in the atmosphere made her turn. Richard Sinclair was standing a few feet away, his jaw stiff and his dark eyes fixed on them. His presence was as magnetic as ever, but this time it was charged with something almost dangerous. “Mabel,” he said, his voice sharply cutting through the air like a blade. Mabel straightened instinctively, the warmth from her conversation with Nicholas evaporating under Richard’s cold stare on her. “Mr. Sinclair,” she said, her tone as neutral as she could manage. Nicholas’s smile remained, though it had lost some of its easy charm. “Richard,” he said with a slight nod. “Kane,” Richard replied, his tone sharp. The tension between the two men was palpable, the air around them immediately filled with unspoken history. Mabel glanced between them, suddenly feeling like a pawn in a game she didn’t understand. “I see you’ve met my secretary,” Richard said, his words pointed. “Yes, and what a delightful woman she is,” Nicholas replied smoothly. “You’re lucky to have her on your team.” Richard squinted his eyes a little, but he said nothing. Instead, he turned to Mabel. “We’re leaving,” he said curtly. Mabel blinked in curiosity and confusion. “But the event—” “Now,” Richard interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. She glanced at Nicholas, who gave her a reassuring smile. “It was lovely meeting you, Mabel,” he said. “I’ll be in touch.” Richard’s jaw clenched visibly at Nicholas’s words, but he said nothing as he turned and strode toward the exit. Mabel followed reluctantly, feeling the weight of Nicholas’s stare on her back as she walked away. The car ride back to the office was tense. Richard’s knuckles were white against the steering wheel, and the air between them was thick with unspoken words. It was a very awkward silence. Mabel finally broke the silence. “What’s your problem?” Richard held tightly on to the steering. “My problem is you associating with Nicholas Kane,” he snapped. “associating?” Mabel repeated, incredulous. “We were just talking. He was kind and polite—something you might want to try sometime.” Richard shot her a glare. “Nicholas is not what he seems. He’s a playboy who doesn’t take anything seriously. You’d do well to stay away from him.” Mabel crossed her arms. “And why do you care who I talk to? Last I checked, my personal life wasn’t part of my job description.” Richard didn’t respond immediately, his jaw working as he struggled to find the right words. Finally, he said, “I’m your boss. It’s my job to ensure you don’t make mistakes that could reflect poorly on the company.” Mabel let out a humorless laugh. “This isn’t about the company. This is about you not liking him.” Richard didn’t deny it, which only fueled her irritation. When they arrived back at the office, Mabel stepped out of the car without waiting for him. She made her way to her desk, her heart pounding with a mix of anger and confusion. As she settled into her chair, her phone buzzed. “I had a wonderful time tonight. Can’t wait to see you again.” The message from Nicholas brought a small smile to her cheeks, but it faded when she noticed Richard standing in the doorway of his office, his eyes locked on her. All alone in his office, Richard walked back and forth nervously. The image of Mabel laughing with Nicholas was burned into his mind, and he couldn’t shake the wave of jealousy that had surged through him. It made no sense. She was his secretary, nothing more. And yet, the thought of her with Nicholas made his chest tighten in a way he couldn’t explain. He sat at his desk, running a hand through his hair. He’d always prided himself on his control, his ability to remain detached. But with Mabel, everything felt...different. As he stared at the door to her office, Richard realized that his feelings for her were far more complicated than he wanted to admit. And that had him scared
