Chapter 12: Torrent and Newton

1091 Words
The heavy iron gates of The Pit rattled violently against the storm as Task Force Delta emerged from the subterranean arena into the desolate railyard of District 11. Acid-laced subterranean rain hammered incessantly against rusted shipping containers and abandoned locomotive frames, churning the mud beneath their boots into a treacherous mire. "Perimeter check clear on the upper rail lines," Sasha reported, her voice coming through the comms with a soft crackle of static. She paused, her brows furrowing beneath her hood. "Wait... my signal is degrading." "My visor is tracking a massive energy distortion," Silas warned urgently, his visor flashing as he adjusted the bio-density filters. "Readings are surging through the drainage grates right beneath us!" Before Mars or Rudy could even reach for their weapons, the pavement shattered. A massive column of high-pressure groundwater detonated from the iron grates, shooting thirty feet straight into the dark night air. In a fraction of a second, the roaring torrent split into dozens of pressurized, razor-sharp hydro-blades, curving through the downpour to rain down on Task Force Delta from every angle in a lethal, crushing strike. "INCOMING!" Mars yelled. Captain Yuki stepped cleanly into the front line, her expression terrifyingly serene despite the whipping deluge. She threw back her duster coat and raised both forearms, revealing the polished tungsten-alloy plating of her Kirin Relic, Code Newton. Unlike weapons that channeled elemental energy or altered physical matter, Code Newton operated on the strict law of mass-inertia displacement. Yuki did not rely on physical force to fight; her gauntlets manipulated the local gravitational and spatial vectors surrounding her body. To invoke its power, she required an absolute anchor point with her feet locked to solid ground, executing precise kinetic gestures to define her target coordinates. The price, however, was unforgiving—altering spatial forces claimed her lifespan at an exponential rate proportional to the mass displaced, causing dark contract runes to creep aggressively up her neck. Planting her boots deep into the mud, Yuki slammed her palms together, her fingers weaving a swift, triangular vector lock. "Kirin Art: Zero-Vector Horizon!" A pale, shimmering wall of distorted, warped space expanded ten feet in front of the squad. The oncoming storm of hydro-blades slammed violently into the barrier, but the moment they made contact with her spatial field, they instantly lost all kinetic momentum. The lethal, pressurized water simply flattened against the invisible plane and crashed harmlessly to the ground as ordinary rain. Through the falling mist, a shadowed figure dropped silently from a high iron crane, landing without a sound twenty paces away. His face was completely sealed behind a sleek, matte-black porcelain mask with glowing crimson optical slits. A miniature energy core was bolted directly over his cheekbones and temples, pulsing with a high-frequency hum that vibrated through the rain. Across his exposed neck, squirming contract runes burned hot against his skin, disappearing beneath the porcelain edges. He didn't offer a taunt or announce his presence; his glowing visor locked instantly onto Yuki. With a swift flick of his bare wrist, the masked man swept his arm across his body. A fifty-foot whip of condensed groundwater lashed out from a nearby puddle, snapping toward Yuki's flank with enough force to sever a steel girder in half. "Stay back!" Yuki commanded her squad, her eyes fixed on the incoming strike. "He's targeting vector lines—conventional attacks won't reach him through that water density!" Yuki slid her forward foot into a deep stance, anchoring her entire body to the earth. "Kirin Art: Kinetic Reversal!" As the water whip tore toward her, Yuki met it head-on with a precise open-palm strike. The instant her gauntlet brushed the pressurized torrent, Code Newton violently inverted the whip's vector direction. The massive wave turned back on itself, roaring toward the masked enforcer with doubled velocity. The masked man didn't flinch. With a subtle flex of his fingers, he parted his own redirected wave effortlessly, slipping through the cascading water like a ghost to close the distance into hand-to-hand range. "Cap, I've got your back!" Rudy shouted, drawing his frosted revolver. "Purging frost!" Rudy fired three absolute-zero rounds from Icy Cold, aiming to freeze the rising groundwater around the enforcer's boots. But without speaking a single word, the masked man flicked his left hand sideways. The moisture in the cold rain instantly condensed into a thick wall of liquid armor around him, catching Rudy's frost bullets and absorbing the absolute-zero impact before the ice could reach his body. "Vertical!" Mars roared, surging forward from the flank to execute an upward katana arc. Before his blade could connect, a high-pressure jet of water burst from the pavement beneath Mars's feet, blasting him backward onto the catwalk and isolating Yuki in a strict one-on-one duel. The masked enforcer stepped directly into Yuki's guard. His movements were swift, liquid, and terrifyingly precise, turning every jab and palm strike into a battering ram of pressurized hydraulic pressure. Yuki met every strike with mathematical precision, catching a high palm with her left gauntlet to bounce the pressure away before stepping inside his center line to drive a gravitational collapse toward his chest. The enforcer twisted his torso mid-air, letting her spatial strike pass inches from his ribs to shatter an iron railway car behind him into scrap metal. The speed of the exchange exploded into a blur of splashing water and shimmering spatial distortions. Heavy red contract runes flared along Yuki's neck, creeping past her jawline as Code Newton strained against the sheer volume of water the enforcer summoned. Seeing his opening as Yuki completed her third spatial strike, the masked enforcer slipped beneath her guard. He encased his right forearm in a dense, solid blade of hyper-compressed groundwater that hummed like a diamond-tipped drill. CRACK! With a sudden, brutal strike, he drove his water-coated arm straight into Yuki's left forearm gauntlet. The crushing hydraulic force shattered her outer armor guard and drove her back three steps through the mud, leaving her left arm numb as a spray of cold rain and blood rained down between them. The masked enforcer stood tall in the downpour, his right arm still dripping with pressurized liquid. His glowing crimson slits stared down at her in complete silence, awaiting her collapse. Yuki slowly straightened her spine, her breathing steady despite the dark, creeping contract runes pulsing violently along her throat. She looked down at her bruised, smoking gauntlet, then raised her eyes to lock directly with his crimson visor. A cold, fearless smirk played on her lips. "Is that all?"
