Chapter 9: Shadows of the Rust Bazaar

1093 Words
The heavy armored transport rumbled as it descended through the grinding iron elevators connecting District 9 to the subterranean depths below. Inside the darkened cargo bay, the air grew thick with the smell of damp ozone and rusted steel. Yuki stood by the primary gear lockers, tossing civilian-style duster coats and heavy dark cloaks to the team. "Strip off all Aegis insignia," she ordered, her voice firm. "We park the transport in an abandoned maintenance bay three levels up. From here on out, we walk in as common buyers." As they stowed their tactical vests and holstered their weapons beneath the oversized coats, Sasha looked toward Yuki. "Cap... how long has Black Crow actually been operating? It feels like they appeared out of nowhere." "That’s what makes them dangerous," Yuki said, pulling a dark scarf over her collar to conceal her Aegis neck seal. "Until two months ago, there wasn't a single record of them in the Directorate database. They aren't an old syndicate trying to reclaim territory; they are a ghost organization. They strike, distribute altered Kirins, and erase their supply lines before forensic teams can even analyze the energetic residue. All we know is that someone with high-level military access and vast financial backing is pulling their strings." "A ghost syndicate with an army of altered Kirin users," Rudy muttered, pulling a worn canvas coat over his twin revolvers. "Sounds like my kind of party." After securing the transport behind locked hydraulic doors in a dead-end maintenance shaft, the group proceeded on foot through a series of drainage tunnels. When they finally stepped through the rusted perimeter archway into District 11—The Iron Trench—the sheer scale of the lawless fringe hit them all at once. There were no sunlight scrubbers here. The entire cavernous district was illuminated by sputtering crimson neon signs, chemical fires flickering in oil drums, and high-voltage power lines hanging like webbed cables overhead. The streets buzzed with open criminal trade. Stalls lined the mud-slicked pathways, openly displaying black-market cybernetics, smuggled military rations, and illicit chemical stimulants. In darkened doorways, veiled brokers haggled over cracked Kirin relics glowing with unstable energy, while non-powered g**g members and desperate Human X outcasts shoved past one another in the dense crowd. "Keep your hands on your pockets and stay close," Vanya warned under her breath, her eyes darting through the bustling alleyways. "If anyone asks, you're looking to buy scrap metal or hired muscle." Vanya led the squad down a narrow stairwell into a basement level away from the main thoroughfare. She stopped in front of a heavy iron door marked only by a faded brass bell. She knocked five times in a sharp, rhythmic sequence. A slide slot clicked open, revealing a pair of tired, bloodshot eyes. After a brief second of recognition, the heavy locks turned, and the door creaked open. The room inside was a chaotic haven of old radio parts, vintage engine blocks, and dusty glass jars. Sitting behind a cluttered wooden counter was an elderly, non-powered human smoking a thin pipe. He had no Kirin runes on his skin and no X-gene aura—just deep wrinkles and a sharp, calculating stare. "Vanya," the old man grunted, exhaling a plume of blue smoke. "You bring a lot of heavy boots into my shop. Aegis boots, by the sound of their steps." "Keep it down, Shopkeep," Vanya said, stepping up to the counter and dropping a small pouch of high-grade currency chips onto the wood. "We aren't here to bust your scrap trade. We need information on Black Crow's local distribution point." The Shopkeep scoffed, sliding the chips off the counter and into his pocket. "Black Crow? You're chasing devils, girl. Nobody speaks that name down here unless they want to end up floating in the chemical sumps. But... if you're looking for the brokers who deal in those unstable, red-runed relics, they don't do business in back alleys." "Where do they operate?" Yuki asked, stepping forward from the shadows of her duster coat. "The Pit," the Shopkeep replied flatly, pointing his pipe toward the floor. "An underground combat ring five blocks south, hidden underneath the old railyard. The local syndicates run illegal fights there to show off their altered Kirin hardware to high-bidding buyers. If you want a meeting with the primary Black Crow broker in District 11, you have to earn an audience inside the ring." "How do we get in?" Rudy asked, crossing his arms. "They don't let spectators talk to the management," the Shopkeep smirked. "To get into the VIP trade lounge, you have to enter the bracket. Three fighters. Three consecutive victories in the pit. You win, you get access to the high-tier betting box where the relic brokers sit." Yuki didn't hesitate. "I'm in." "Count me in too, Cap," Rudy grinned, checking the hidden weight of his revolvers beneath his coat. "I haven't had a good warm-up all week." Vanya cracked her knuckles, stepping up alongside them. "I'll take the third slot. Aegis officers stick out if they fight too clean. I know how to brawl like a Trench native." Yuki turned to the rest of the group. "Silas, Sasha, Mars—you take the spectator balconies. Silas, scan every relic signature in the arena. Sasha, keep an eye on the exits. Mars... keep your power locked down unless the entire arena collapses." "Understood," Mars nodded quietly, adjusting his hood over his eyes. Ten minutes later, the squad navigated through the subterranean tunnels beneath the railyard, following the booming bass of heavy drums and the roaring shouts of a massive crowd. They passed through a heavy iron gate into The Pit—a massive, sunken cage arena surrounded by towering, multi-tiered iron balconies packed with hundreds of screaming spectators. Floodlights cut through the thick haze of cigar smoke and sweat. At the center of the cage, an announcer standing atop a raised platform raised a horn microphone to his lips, his voice echoing across the roaring arena. "Welcome, bottom-dwellers and big spenders, to tonight's blood bracket!" the announcer bellowed. "We have a fresh crew of challengers stepping into the cage!" Down in the tunnel entrance, Yuki, Rudy, and Vanya stepped forward, the heavy iron gate slamming shut behind them. High above in the shadowed spectator stands, Mars, Sasha, and Silas leaned over the rusted railing, their eyes fixed on the arena floor as the first set of opponents stepped out from the opposite side of the cage—wielding weapons that hummed with a dangerous, unnatural crimson glow.
