The light in Arena 4 shifted from the warm amber of standby mode to the harsh neon blue of combat initialization. Heavy steel blast doors slammed shut along the perimeter, locking Mars and Ren inside the wide, circular sparring ring. High above, behind reinforced viewport glass, dozens of operatives from Delta, Bravo, Zulu, and administrative staff looked down into the pit.
"Arena sub-routines engaged," the automated system chime announced through the intercom. "Holographic Combat Mode online. Safety limiters active."
Under the arena's specialized projection matrix, their Kirin weapons were mapped onto safe holographic constructs. A hit wouldn't shatter bones or burn away lifespans—it registered on the armor as a glowing digital marker, tallying points on the overhead scoreboard. No permanent damage, no spreading black Kirin tattoos.
"Pretty cozy setup, huh?" Ren called out, resting his heavy broadsword against his armored shoulder with a smug grin. "No running out of clock today, rookie. Which means you don't get to use 'saving your life force' as an excuse when I wipe the floor with you."
Mars stood fifty paces away, silent and still. He reached down and gripped the hilt of his weapon, invoking its registered Kirin name to activate the holographic sync.
"Syncing Kirin: Horizontal & Vertical," the arena computer announced.
Mars's katana flared with a pale blue digital edge. The rules of Horizontal & Vertical were strict and absolute. A horizontal s***h could cut through any tangible, physical object, while a vertical s***h bypassed physical structures to s***h intangible targets like energy shields or elemental blasts. The catch? Mars could never perform two slashes of the same orientation consecutively—it required a strict alternating rhythm: Horizontal, Vertical, Horizontal, Vertical. If he successfully executed a continuous ten-hit streak—five horizontals and five verticals without stopping or breaking form—it unlocked his Kirin's ultimate ability: Margin, an inescapable whirlwind of razor-sharp slashes that shredded everything in the area.
Across the arena, Ren raised his broadsword with a flourish. "Syncing Kirin: Boom Boom Pao!"
The broadsword hummed with a deep, bass-heavy vibration. Boom Boom Pao was built on kinetic absorption: every time it blocked or struck a target, it absorbed the physical force and stored it inside its dense frame. Once its kinetic threshold was reached, Ren could unleash a massive, area-of-effect sonic boom. However, Boom Boom Pao had a critical weakness—it could never fire two sonic booms consecutively. After a blast, its internal core was forced into a strict recharge cycle before it could absorb kinetic energy again.
"Point-match to ten," the automated announcer declared. "Begin!"
Ren moved instantly, his innate X-gene ability flaring to life. A translucent crimson shell of kinetic armor wrapped around his body like a suit of plate mail. He surged across the concrete, closing the distance in the blink of an eye, swinging Boom Boom Pao in a massive cleave.
Mars didn't try to block the heavy blade head-on. He stepped inward, executing an upward vertical s***h with Horizontal & Vertical.
THUMMM!
The vertical wave passed right through Ren's physical sword and struck his crimson kinetic armor directly, cutting through the intangible energy barrier.
TARGET HIT: DELTA +1 POINT.
RHYTHM COUNTER: 1 (VERTICAL)
A bright green digital ring flashed over Ren’s armor, but Ren barely flinched. Boom Boom Pao’s heavy crossguard flared white as it absorbed the momentum of the swing.
"Nice shot! My blade loved the flavor!" Ren laughed wildly, sweeping his broadsword in a counter-strike.
Mars immediately chained his next move into a crisp horizontal s***h, slicing across Ren's physical shoulder guard.
TARGET HIT: DELTA +1 POINT.
RHYTHM COUNTER: 2 (HORIZONTAL)
DELTA: 2 | BRAVO: 0
"Is that all you've got?!" Ren barked.
Ren absorbed both hits, charging Boom Boom Pao to maximum capacity. He slammed his foot into the concrete, bringing his broadsword down with both hands into the center of the ring.
BOOM-BOOM-PAO!
A deafening sonic boom exploded outward in a thirty-foot radius. A physical shockwave of compressed sound and kinetic force blasted Mars off his feet, sending him crashing against the boundary wall.
TARGET HITS: BRAVO +4 POINTS.
DELTA: 2 | BRAVO: 4
"Man, that sonic boom ability is nasty!" Rudy winced from the balcony, gripping the railing.
"Ren used his sonic blast," Sasha noted, leaning forward anxiously. "His Kirin has to enter a recharge phase now—he can't do another one right away!"
Down in the pit, Mars pushed himself up. His eyes narrowed as he saw Ren charging forward again during Boom Boom Pao’s mandatory cool-down. Mars centered his breathing, falling into his Kirin’s strict rhythm.
Horizontal! A sweeping strike caught Ren's chest armor. (Counter: 3)
Vertical! An upward slice cut through Ren's kinetic shield. (Counter: 4)
Horizontal! A low strike clipped Ren's knee. (Counter: 5)
Mars was a blur of steel. He dodged Ren's frantic swings, landing hit after hit as the arena computer tallied his perfect alternating streak.
Vertical! (Counter: 6)
Horizontal! (Counter: 7)
Vertical! (Counter: 8)
Horizontal! (Counter: 9)
"He's at nine hits!" Captain Valerie shouted from the balcony, her jaw dropping. "He's about to trigger it!"
Ren realized the danger, panic flashing across his face. "Get off me, rookie!" He threw a wild, heavy punch with his crimson-armored fist.
Mars slipped beneath the punch and executed his final, crisp vertical s***h straight through Ren's guard.
RHYTHM COUNTER: 10 (COMPLETE)
"Special Ability Unlocked: MARGIN!" the system roared.
SWISH-SWISH-SWISH-SWISH!
A blinding, spherical whirlwind of hundreds of holographic slashes erupted around Mars, slicing through Ren’s defense from every conceivable angle. Ren was trapped inside a storm of white-hot force, digital damage markers flashing across his entire body like fireworks.
TARGET HITS: DELTA +6 POINTS.
DELTA: 8 | BRAVO: 4
When the whirlwind dissipated, Ren collapsed to his knees, panting heavily, his crimson armor shattered and his points heavily drained.
The crowd on the balcony erupted into wild cheers. But down in the ring, Ren’s pride completely snapped.
"You... you little trash..." Ren snarled, his eyes bloodshot with rage. He forced himself up, ignoring the score, ignoring the arena rules, and forced Boom Boom Pao past its safety limiters. "I am a Dual Wielder of Team Bravo! I won't lose to a nobody who hides behind a pathetic trick!"
Ren lunged with pure, unbridled malice, driving the point of his heavy broadsword straight for Mars's throat in a full-lethal strike that bypassed the holographic safety matrix.
Mars blocked the lethal blow with his katana, but the force slammed him back. Ren’s taunts, his arrogant glare, and the sudden life-threatening danger ignited something deep, dark, and dangerous inside Mars.
I won't be weak... I won't let them trap me again...
A sudden, agonizing flash ripped through Mars’s mind.
Faint, fragmented memories surged from the dark depths of his past—blinding white laboratory lights, cold steel restraints pinned around his wrists, syringe needles, and sterile glass walls. Figures in white lab coats standing over him, whispering cold technical jargon while searing, unbearable pain tore through his youthful body, cutting and carving into his soul...
"NO!" Mars screamed.
The sheer trauma and rage shattered Mars’s mental locks. The dark pulse deep within his blood erupted into an uncontrollable frenzy.
THUMMM!
The holographic lights in the arena flickered and died. A thick, suffocating wave of pitch-black shadow energy exploded from Mars’s chest. The dark aura didn't wrap around his weapon—it violently consumed his body.
Tendrils of void-black shadow crept up his neck and clung to the left side of his face like a living, jagged demon mask. His left eye glowed with a terrifying, crimson light through the shadow shroud. Mars let out a guttural, inhuman roar, his mind consumed by a violent rampage as he lost total control of his dormant ability.
BOOM!
With speed that defied human sight, the shadowed Mars swung his blade, shattering Ren’s heavy Boom Boom Pao broadsword instantly and sending Ren flying across the arena into the reinforced wall, unconscious before he even hit the ground. But Mars didn't stop. He turned his glowing red gaze toward the spectator balcony, leaping into the air, his shadow-draped sword raised to destroy the heavy observation glass.
"He's going on a rampage!" Sasha screamed in horror.
Before the feral, shadowed Mars could impact the glass, two immense figures dropped from the balcony, shattering the concrete ring floor as they landed.
"Stand down, kid!" Balthazar roared.
The Team Zulu veteran slammed his massive Kirin warhammer, Rising Sun, directly into the earth in front of Mars, triggering its ground-controlling force to shatter and buckle the concrete floor, pinning the black shadow energy in place.
Simultaneously, Captain Yuki appeared behind Mars like a ghost. She slipped off her tactical glove, exposing her dark Kirin tattoos, and slammed her heavy Kirin gauntlet, Code Newton, directly onto the back of Mars's neck, unleashing an immense wave of kinetic suppression.
"That's enough, Mars," Yuki said, her voice dropping all its usual relaxed demeanor, replaced by pure, commanding authority. "Bring it back."
The combined force of Balthazar's crushing weight and Yuki's kinetic dampening choked out the wild shadow energy. The demon-like shadow mask clinging to the left side of Mars's face cracked and dissolved into thin air.
Mars’s eyes rolled back, his knees buckling as his dark ability receded into his veins. Yuki caught him effortlessly before he hit the ground, slinging his arm over her shoulder.
The training arena was completely silent, save for the hum of dying electronics and the groans of the unconscious Ren across the pit. High above, the spectators stared down in absolute shock. Dual Wielders were known to exist in Espia, but nobody in Aegis had ever seen an ability as terrifyingly dark—or a past as haunting—as the one that had just breached the surface of Task Force Delta's quietest rookie.
