The heavy steel gates of the Aegis Directorate’s central headquarters hummed as Task Force Delta’s transport glided into the underground bay. Sunlight barely reached this part of Espia, replaced instead by sterile blue fluorescent tubes, the screech of hydraulic lifts, and the low chatter of technicians in high-collared armored vests.
As the rear ramp lowered, Rudy stretched his arms wide with an exaggerated groan, his Kirin handguns already stowed safely in their magnetic waist holsters.
"Ah, sweet home Aegis. Smells like ozone, bad coffee, and unpaid overtime."
"Keep it down, Rudy," Sasha said quietly, checking her tactical gloves as she stepped off the ramp. "You know how the main lobby gets during shift changes."
She wasn't wrong. Aegis HQ was a sprawling fortress, designed to look like a sanctuary of unity but organized like a fortress under siege. Armed guards—both non-powered operatives clad in exo-ballistic armor and Human X officers wearing regulatory containment bands—patrolled the polished marble walkways. Anti-X protests occasionally gathered outside the perimeter gates, but inside, the Directorate maintained a rigid, almost suffocating illusion of perfect order.
"Head straight to Briefing Room 3," Captain Yuki instructed, rolling her shoulders as she adjusted her gloves. "Director Vance is out of the building today—some emergency summit with the Espia City Council over the District 9 riot. That means we’re reporting directly to Chief Assistant Kubashi."
Rudy winced, his cheerful demeanor faltering slightly. "Kubashi? Man... that guy’s cooler than my frost bullets, and not in the fun way."
Mars remained silent, falling in line behind Yuki. As they traversed the glass-walled catwalks, he looked down into the training yards below. Dozens of operatives were running drills. In one pit, a Human X operative was blasting plasma targets under the supervision of a heavy-armored instructor. In another, a non-powered soldier was practicing quick-draws with a Kirin assault rifle—Mars could see the faint black ink along the soldier's neck pulsing with every burst.
Everyone here pays a price, Mars thought, his hand instinctively brushing against the pommel of his Kirin katana. Some with their bloodlines, some with their years.
When they reached Briefing Room 3, the doors slid open automatically.
Standing by the central holographic console was a tall, immaculate man wearing a tailored grey suit over an Aegis tactical vest. His hair was slicked back, silver at the temples, and his breath gave off a faint trail of frost even in the climate-controlled room.
Chief Assistant Kubashi turned his pale blue eyes toward Team Delta. The air in the room instantly dropped several degrees. As a high-ranking Human X within Aegis, Kubashi possessed lethal cryokinetic abilities, allowing him to freeze localized moisture in seconds. He was cold, precise, and entirely unbothered by small talk.
"Task Force Delta," Kubashi greeted, his voice sharp as a shattered icicle. "You're five minutes behind schedule, Captain Yuki."
"Blame traffic in District 9, Kubashi," Yuki replied effortlessly, leaning against the edge of the conference table without a hint of deference. "The target is secured in the medical wing. Non-lethal subdual, minimal collateral damage."
"Minimal?" Kubashi tapped the console, pulling up a 3D thermal map of District 9 showing molten rail cars and frozen streets. "You melted half a transit hub and froze the other half. The City Council is breathing down the Director's neck. But... the suspect is alive, and the mob was dispersed without civilian casualties. A passable result."
"A passable result? We saved the whole sector, man!" Rudy chimed in, grinning.
Kubashi gave Rudy a look cold enough to freeze boiling water, instantly shutting him up. "You also recovered traces of modified Kirin weaponry. Black-market gear engineered to bypass standard safety limiters—meaning it burns through the wielder's life force twice as fast in exchange for raw power."
Before Yuki could respond, the heavy double doors of the briefing room slammed open.
"Well, well, well! Look who made it back from the kiddie pool!"
A loud, booming laugh echoed through the room as four operatives walked in, clad in high-visibility white and red Aegis armor.
"Team Bravo," Yuki sighed, though a faint, amused smirk tugged at her lips. "I thought you guys were on border patrol."
Leading Team Bravo was Captain Valerie, a boisterous, heavily tattooed woman who wielded a massive Kirin Warhammer strapped to her back. Beside her was Kaito, a Human X who could manipulate magnetic fields, and Nora, a sharp-eyed sniper holding a Kirin rifle that hummed with high-frequency sound waves.
And walking right beside Valerie was Team Bravo's frontline specialist: Ren.
Ren was a young Dual Wielder, arrogant and exceptionally gifted. He carried a heavy Kirin broadsword and possessed an innate X-gene power that allowed him to coat his body in dense, kinetic armor. Ren scoffed, resting his hand lazily on his sword hilt as his eyes locked onto Mars.
"We finished our mission two hours ago, Cap," Ren said, smirking as he stepped directly into Mars's personal space. "Unlike Delta, we don't take all day to tame a low-tier firebug."
Mars didn't move an inch, staring back at Ren with a calm, unbothered gaze. "The goal was containment, not execution."
"The goal is efficiency," Ren snapped, his smile fading into a glare. "I heard you struggled out there, rookie. Took a full blast to the face because you couldn't handle your own steel? A real Dual Wielder doesn't need his Captain to step in and play nanny."
"That's enough, Ren," Captain Valerie barked, clapping a heavy hand onto Ren's shoulder and dragging him back a step. "Save the trash talk for the sparring ring." She looked over at Yuki with a grin.
"Good to see you alive, Yuki. Heard your tattoos are getting pretty close to your collarbone."
"I've still got plenty of miles left on me, Val," Yuki replied smoothly.
Kubashi cleared his throat, a sharp c***k of frost echoing off the glass table. "If Task Force Bravo is quite finished interrupting, both teams have mandatory downtime while the Directorate analyzes the black-market Kirin tech. The Director will return tomorrow morning for a full briefing on the syndicate's movements."
Ren leaned closer to Mars one last time before turning away, dropping his voice to a whisper. "Training yard. One hour, rookie. Let's see if that dark power you're hiding is real, or if you're just dead weight dragging Delta down."
As Team Bravo turned and walked out, Rudy whistled softly. "Man, Ren's ego gets bigger every time we see him."
Sasha looked over at Mars, concern etched into her face. "Mars... you don't have to go. He's just trying to provoke you."
Mars looked down at his gloved hand, the faint, hidden pulse of his darkness throbbing beneath his palm. "I know."
He turned and headed toward the door, his tone quiet but firm.
"I'll be in the armory."
