The rain falling over District 9 didn’t just cool the pavement—it hissed, instantly vaporizing into dense plumes of steam as soon as Team Delta hit the asphalt.
A hundred yards ahead, the abandoned rail yard was bathed in an ominous orange glare. Freight cars lay twisted and molten, their steel frames glowing like dying embers.
Standing at the center of the devastation was the target: a man in his late twenties, his clothes half-charred, gasping for air as violent, white-hot flames erupted uncontrollably from his arms.
"Riot shields are down! Fall back!" shouted a police officer through a megaphone, retreating past Team Delta with his unit. "That freak’s gonna blow the whole sector!"
"He's not a freak, he's scared!" Sasha yelled back over the roar of the fire, though her voice quivered. She pressed herself against the side of an overturned transport, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She looked at her trembling gloved hands. Her power was absolute—a single touch could freeze his motor functions instantly—but getting close enough to a walking furnace without getting incinerated was another story.
"Hold position, squad," Yuki said calmly, stepping to the front of the line. She casually adjusted the wrist straps on her heavy Kirin gauntlets, completely unfazed by the heat rolling off the yard. "Rudy, give us a path."
"You got it, Cap! Time to cool this party down!" Rudy declared with his signature infectious grin.
He drew his dual Kirin handguns, spun them expert-style, and aimed the left barrel directly at the wall of fire. As he pulled the trigger, a brilliant frost-blue beam shot forth, instantly freezing a path through the flames and coating the molten ground in a thick layer of ice. Rudy let out a loud cheer, but as he kept the suppression fire going, a subtle twitch caught his neck. Beneath his tactical collar, the faint outline of a black tattoo crept a fraction of a millimeter further up his skin, eating away another sliver of his lifespan. He ignored the sting, laughing it off as he kept the frost lane open.
"Mars, Sasha, push forward using the ice lane!" Yuki ordered. "I’ll draw his direct line of sight."
"On it," Mars replied, his voice a low, focused grumble.
He unlatched his Kirin katana and bolted down the frozen path alongside Sasha. As he ran, Mars concentrated intensely on the cold embers deep in his chest. He knew the power was in him. He could feel that dark, shadowy pull beneath his skin, aching to surface. If I can just unleash it now, Mars thought, his teeth grinding, I won't have to strain my Kirin blade. I won't have to burn my own clock.
He gripped the hilt tightly, trying to force the darkness to flow into his steel. But nothing happened. The shadowy energy remained stubbornly locked behind a wall of mental hesitation and raw inexperience. Frustration flared in his chest, but there was no time to dwell on it.
The target spotted them. His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with tears and soot, wild with panic and despair.
"Stay back!" the pyro kinetic screamed, slamming his hands together. A massive wave of fire surged toward Mars and Sasha, threatening to melt the ice path whole. "Don't come any closer! You Aegis dogs only care about keeping us in cages!"
