5: ALPHA JAMES.

LYCAN KING THOMAS GOULD. I was concerned that my son seemed a little too attached to the woman that he had brought home. We knew absolutely nothing about her, except that apparently someone wanted her dead. For all we knew, they had good reason for that, too. I didn’t like how desperate he seemed to care for her and be at the hospital with her. Partly because it simply wasn’t like him. Leo had always been focused on his future. His older brother was my heir, of course, but Leo had dreams of leading the guard one day, following in Jack’s footsteps. He had always looked up to him, and that had pleased me. Jack had no wife or children of his own, so he had taken Leo under his wing. I pushed my worries away. Leo was a grown man; he wouldn’t let some random woman deter him from his goals. Still, the sooner that we find out where she belongs and get her back there, the better. Jack had informed me of the amnesia, which irritated the hell out of me. It couldn’t just be easy, could it? She couldn’t have just woken up and given us her details. No, now it was going to be that much f*****g harder. I wondered if Leo had found anything useful in her phone; surely she must have her home number stored. We could just use that to get her home. I knocked on Leo’s bedroom door, but he didn’t respond. It wasn’t locked, so I pushed it open and went inside. “Leo, are you here, son?” I called out, in case he was in the bathroom. No reply. I was about to leave when I saw his laptop sitting on the table with some papers next to it. There was a photograph of the woman with an older couple. I picked it up; maybe Donald would recognize them. Better still, there was a list of three phone numbers. I smiled and grabbed it. This was exactly what I was hoping for. I would have the woman home with one phone call. I pulled out my mobile phone and tapped in the first number; it was labeled Dad. My finger hovered over the call button. I knew that Leo wouldn’t like me doing this, especially without him present. He was worried that we would be putting her in danger, as we didn’t know who had hurt her in the first place. If I were being honest, then I know that he’s right. Perhaps I should hold off for now and see if she remembers anything once she has had a little time to rest and heal. I would just find a way to keep my son away from her. I stored the numbers in my phone and put the paper back. I took the photograph with me, though. I still intended to ask Donald about it. ALPHA LUCAS JAMES. The sun was already up by the time I finally headed upstairs. I had spent the night playing poker in the games room with the pack gamma and a few of the warriors. Violet had thought that I needed to find a way to bond with the pack members, so I’d arranged the game. I was pretty sure it had worked, too, especially after letting Ryan, the gamma, win a few hands. We had spent the night laughing and acting like old buddies. I yawned and reached for the bedroom door. I needed a power nap before starting the day, though. I took off my clothes and fell into the empty bed in my boxer shorts. The satin sheets felt cool on my skin. I stretched out and closed my eyes. I hadn’t been sure when my parents had arranged my marriage to Violet, but everything was turning out pretty well. As the second son of my parents, my only hope for ever being a pack Alpha was if my brother died or I married into it. Violet’s parents, ex-Alpha and Luna Adams, had only had one child, a girl, so she could not inherit the pack alone. That’s why they made the arrangement with my father for us to marry. I wasn’t complaining. Violet was a beautiful and charming woman. Besides, I loved being Alpha now that Alpha Adams has officially stepped down and handed the pack over to me. I was tired, but I was finding it hard to fall asleep. I kept thinking of all the changes that I wanted to make around here. I was even thinking of changing the pack’s name. Alpha Adam’s is a good man and was a fair and kind leader, but I wanted to rule in my own way rather than always being in his shadow. Besides, the Moonlit Sky pack felt a little basic to me; I wanted something a little edgier. Something that would make anyone who wanted to try and start any trouble with us think twice. Maybe something like the Blood River pack, or the Night Hunters pack. Even the Dark Moon pack sounded a little more dangerous than the Moonlit Sky pack. I would have to petition the Lycan King to change the pack’s name, though. I had never met him myself, but had heard stories about him. Stories that made the mode bloodthirsty werewolf sound like a puppy dog. The idea of having to go and see him in person was the only thing that had stopped me from changing the name already. I finally started dropping off when a knock on the bedroom door startled me awake. “Violet, are you awake, sweetie?” I heard her mother call through the closed door. I groaned in annoyance and threw off the blanket. I opened the door, and her mother stepped back in surprise. “Oh, Lucas! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you. I was just looking for Violet. We were meant to be meeting for breakfast, but she didn’t come down,” she explained. I gestured over at the empty bed and shrugged. “She’s not here. She was already gone when I got here. I was playing poker last night. Perhaps she got distracted, or changed her mind about breakfast. Have you tried her office?” I suggested. She nodded and began to move away from the door. “I will try there next,” she said, disappearing down the hallway. I grunted, closed the door, and went back to bed.
