I woke up to screaming.
Not Lyra.
Me.
I was in the cabin. Sweating. The mark burning.
And across the room, Lyra was glowing.
Soft silver light. Coming from her hands.
Her eyes were closed. She was talking in her sleep.
"Don’t hurt her. Don’t hurt her."
"Lyra," I said. "Lyra, wake up."
She jolted awake. The light vanished.
She looked at her hands. Then at me.
And burst into tears.
"Don’t tell," she sobbed. "Please don’t tell."
Kael and Mara and Nova were at the door in 2 seconds.
"What happened?" Kael asked.
"Nothing," I said quickly. "Bad dream."
They looked at Lyra. Then at me.
"Right," Mara said. "Bad dream."
When they left, I sat on Lyra’s bed.
"Show me," I said softly.
She shook her head.
"Lyra. Show me."
She held out her hands.
A tiny ball of silver light appeared. Smaller than mine. Flickering.
"It started after you got hurt," she whispered. "After you saved me. I dreamed about you. And then... this."
My chest hurt.
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
"Because you’re the Chosen. Not me. And if people find out, they’ll take me away. Like they tried to take you."
I pulled her into a hug.
"No one’s taking you. Ever."
---
We didn’t tell the others. Not yet.
For the next week, I trained Lyra in secret.
At night. In the woods behind the cabin.
"Like this," I said. "Breathe in. Think of something good."
She did. The light got steadier.
"Now out."
The light shot forward and hit a tree.
Lyra gasped. "I did it!"
"You did," I laughed. "Again."
Kael found us on night 3.
He just leaned against a tree and watched.
"How long?" he asked.
"Since the battle," I said. "She has the mark too. Just... hidden."
"Another Chosen," he said. "Four now."
He didn’t look mad. He looked... relieved.
"You should tell Nova and Mara."
"I will. Soon."
---
*TWO WEEKS LATER*
Ashvale was rebuilding fast.
Darian’s men hadn’t come back.
But the Council had.
Three Guardians showed up at noon.
White cloaks. Silver armor.
And with them... Sister Miriam looked scared.
"We’re here for the Chosen," the leader said. "All of them."
My blood went cold.
"All of them?"
"We know there are four now," he said. "The temple sent word."
Mara stepped forward. "Who told you?"
"Doesn’t matter," the Guardian said. "You’re coming with us. To the Capital. For training."
"No," I said.
"Excuse me?"
"I said no. We’re not going."
The Guardian looked at Kael. "You’re supposed to be in charge of her."
"I am," Kael said. "And I agree with her. No."
The other two Guardians put their hands on their swords.
---
That’s when Lyra stepped out from behind me.
Her hands were shaking.
But her wrist was glowing.
"What’s this?" the lead Guardian said.
"This is my sister," I said. "And she’s not going anywhere with you."
The Guardian’s eyes narrowed.
"A hidden one. Even better. Four Chosen. The Council will be pleased."
He reached for Lyra.
I moved before I thought.
Light hit him in the chest and threw him back.
The other two drew their swords.
"Stand down!" one yelled.
"Make me," Mara said. Three light daggers appeared in her hands.
Nova’s shield snapped up around Lyra and me.
Kael was between us and them.
"Last chance," he said. "Leave. Now."
The lead Guardian got up. Blood on his lip.
"You’re making a mistake. The Council protects the Chosen."
"The Council abandoned my mother," I said. "You don’t get to protect us now."
They stared at us.
Then at each other.
Then they left.
But not before the leader said: "This isn’t over, Moon Chosen. The Council will decide what happens to you."
---
When they were gone, Lyra collapsed.
The light went out.
"Did I do bad?" she whispered.
"No," I said. "You did perfect."
Mara kicked a rock. "Well. That escalated."
Nova was already packing. "They’ll be back. With more."
"Then we leave first," Kael said.
I looked at him. "Where?"
"There’s a place. Old. Hidden. Where the first Chosen went when the Council got bad."
"Where?"
"The Ruins of Lunara. 3 days north."
Sister Miriam came to us that night.
"I’m sorry," she said. "I didn’t tell them about Lyra. I swear."
"I know," I said. "But we have to go."
"I know." She hugged me. "You take care of her. Of all of them."
---
*THE ROAD NORTH*
It was just us. Again.
Me, Kael, Mara, Nova, Lyra.
And Old Kade. He insisted on coming.
"Someone has to cook," he grumbled.
Lyra walked next to me. Practicing. Little sparks in her palm.
"You’re getting good," I told her.
"I don’t want to fight," she said.
"You won’t have to. Not if I can help it."
On night 2, we made camp by a river.
Lyra fell asleep first.
Mara was on watch. Nova was reading.
Kael and I sat apart from the others.
"You think the Council is working with Darian?" I asked.
"No," Kael said. "I think they’re worse. They want to control you. All of you. Put you in towers. Use you as weapons."
"And if we say no?"
"Then they call us rogues. And hunt us."
I looked at Lyra. Sleeping. Peaceful.
"I won’t let them have her."
"I know," Kael said. "That’s why I’m here."
He took my hand.
"Luna. If it comes to it. If they give us a choice. Them or her."
"We choose her," I finished. "Always."
---
*DAY 3*
We reached the Ruins of Lunara at dusk.
It wasn’t a city.
It was a crater.
Big. Circular.
And in the center, a tower made of moonstone.
Glowing.
"Goddess," Nova whispered. "It’s real."
As we got closer, the ground started to glow.
Silver lines. Like the ward we used on Darian.
But bigger. Covering the whole crater.
A voice echoed. Not out loud. In my head.
`_Welcome home, daughter of Selene._`
I stopped.
"Did you hear that?"
Everyone shook their heads.
`_The others can’t hear me yet. Only you. The first._`
"Who are you?" I thought back.
`_I am Lunara. The first Moon Chosen. And I’ve been waiting for you._`
The tower doors opened.
Inside was light.
And in the center, a pedestal.
And on it, a crown.
Made of silver. With a crescent moon.
`_Put it on,_` Lunara said. `_And I will show you what the Council has been hiding._`
I looked at Kael.
He nodded.
I walked forward.
Picked up the crown.
It was cold. Heavy.
And when I put it on...
The world went white.
I saw the Council.
In a room. Talking.
"Four Chosen," one said. "We can use them to bring back the old magic."
"What about the girl?" another asked. "The one from Ashvale?"
"She’s too independent," the first said. "She’ll need to be... contained."
Then I saw Darian.
In a cell.
And a Council member talking to him.
"We can help each other," the Council member said. "You give us the other Chosen. We give you revenge."
The vision ended.
I was on my knees.
Kael was holding me.
"What did you see?" he asked.
I looked up.
"The Council and Darian. They’re working together."
"To do what?" Mara asked.
"To capture us. All of us."
Lyra grabbed my hand.
"Then what do we do?"
I stood up. The crown still on my head.
It didn’t hurt. It felt right.
"We fight," I said. "But not their way. Our way."
Outside, the whole crater lit up.
The wards. All of them.
`_The ruins are awake,_` Lunara said in my head. `_And so are you._`
The war was coming.
But this time, we had a home.
And we had each other.
Four Chosen.
One crown.
Zero fear.
