Darian’s tent was quiet.
Too quiet.
No guards inside. Just him.
A table. Maps. And two cups of tea.
"Sit," he said again.
Mara’s daggers were out. Nova’s shield was up.
Lyra was holding my hand.
Only Kael wasn’t looking at Darian.
He was looking at the floor.
"Kael?" I said.
He didn’t answer.
Darian followed my eyes.
"Oh," he said. Soft. "You didn’t tell her."
"Tell me what?" I asked.
Kael finally looked up.
His face was blank. The way it got before a fight.
"I was his," he said.
"What?"
"I was Darian’s. Before I was yours."
The tent went silent.
---
"What do you mean ‘his’?" Mara asked.
Kael sighed. Like he’d been holding this in for years.
"I was a Guardian. In training. 5 years ago."
"And?"
"And the Council assigned me to the King. To Malric. As a personal guard."
My stomach dropped.
"You worked for him?"
"For 2 years," Kael said. "I was there when he went after your mom. I was there when she sealed him."
The tea cup in my hand shook.
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
"Because you looked at me like I was good," he said. "And I wasn’t. Not then."
Darian leaned back in his chair.
"Tell her the rest, Kael. About the deal."
Kael closed his eyes.
"After Selene sealed Malric, the Council came to me. They said ‘The boy will need someone. Someone who knows him. Someone who can watch him.’"
"So they sent you to spy on me?" Darian said.
"They sent me to keep you alive," Kael corrected. "Until they needed you."
"And you agreed?" I whispered.
"I agreed," Kael said. "Because they had my sister."
---
He pulled out a locket.
Opened it.
Inside was a girl. Maybe 10. With Kael’s eyes.
"Her name is Elara," he said. "She was 8 when they took her. Said if I didn’t work for them, she’d ‘have an accident’."
"Where is she now?" Nova asked.
"At the Capital," Kael said. "In the Council’s tower."
I felt sick.
"So all of this... protecting me... was because of her?"
"No," Kael said. Fast. "At first, yes. But then I met you. And Lyra. And I remembered what it felt like to choose something."
He looked at me.
"I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m just asking you to let me finish this."
---
Darian laughed. "Touching. Really."
"Shut up," Mara snapped.
"Why?" Darian said. "It’s true. He’s been playing both sides."
"I haven’t," Kael said. "Not anymore."
"Prove it," Darian said. "The Council wants you to bring us in. Alive. They promised me my freedom if I helped. What are you going to do?"
Kael drew his sword.
Not at Darian.
He put it on the table. Between us.
"I’m choosing her," he said. "I choose Luna. I choose them."
Darian studied him.
"And if the Council kills your sister for it?"
"Then I’ll burn the Capital down to get her back," Kael said. "But I’m done being their dog."
---
I didn’t know what to feel.
Angry? Hurt? Relieved?
All of it.
"Why didn’t you tell me sooner?" I asked.
"Because I was scared you’d leave," he said honestly. "And I couldn’t lose you too."
"Too?"
"My sister. My honor. I already lost those. I wasn’t going to lose you."
Lyra tugged my sleeve.
"Is he bad?" she whispered.
I looked at Kael. Really looked.
The scars. The tired eyes. The way he stood between us and Darian.
"No," I said. "He’s not bad."
I picked up his sword. Handed it back to him.
"Then help me end this."
He took it. And nodded.
---
Darian clapped slowly.
"Beautiful. Really. Family drama and redemption."
"Why did you ask us here?" I said. "If not to trap us?"
"Because the Council is lying to both of us," Darian said.
"How?"
"They told me if I helped capture you, I’d get revenge. They told you if you surrendered, you’d be safe."
"And?"
"And neither is true," Darian said. "They want to use the four of you to restart the old magic. The kind that needs sacrifice."
The room went cold.
"Sacrifice?" Nova asked.
"One Chosen dies," Darian said. "The other three get power. That’s how it worked 500 years ago. That’s how my father died. Selene killed him to power the seal."
"She didn’t know," I said.
"Maybe not," Darian said. "But the Council does. And they want to do it again."
Mara cursed.
"So if we go to the Capital..."
"We die," Kael finished. "One of us."
Lyra squeezed my hand harder.
---
"So what’s the plan?" I asked Darian.
"Funny," he said. "I was hoping you had one."
"We have to warn people," Nova said. "The other villages. That the Council isn’t safe."
"They won’t believe you," Darian said. "Not without proof."
"Then we get proof," I said. "From the Capital."
"That’s suicide," Darian said.
"That’s the only way," I said. "We go in. We get Elara. We get the records. And we expose them."
Darian stared at me.
"You really are like her."
"Like who?"
"Selene. She’d rather die than let them win."
He stood up.
"I’m not joining you."
"But?"
"But I won’t stop you," he said. "And I’ll call my men off. For now."
"Why?" Kael asked.
"Because if the Council wins, I lose too," Darian said. "And because..." He looked at me. "Because you’re family. Stupid, reckless family."
He tossed me a key.
"Capital dungeons. Level 3. That’s where they keep the records. And probably your sister too, Kael."
---
We left the tent as the sun was coming up.
No one spoke for an hour.
Finally Mara said: "So. Your boyfriend used to work for the bad guys."
"He’s not my boyfriend," I said.
"Could’ve fooled me," Mara grinned.
"Shut up," I said. But I wasn’t mad.
Kael walked next to me.
"I’m sorry."
"I know," I said. "But you stayed. That’s what matters."
"What if I hadn’t?"
"Then I’d be fighting you too."
He stopped. Pulled me into a hug.
"I won’t let them hurt you. Or her."
"I know," I said into his shoulder. "I know."
---
*THAT NIGHT*
We made camp 5 miles from the Capital.
We could see the towers. Black against the moon.
Lyra was asleep.
Nova and Mara were on watch.
It was just me and Kael.
"Tell me about Elara," I said.
"She’s stubborn," he said, smiling. "Like you. Hates vegetables. Loves horses."
"How long since you saw her?"
"3 years."
I took his hand.
"We’ll get her back."
"You can’t promise that."
"I just did."
He kissed my forehead.
"Goddess, you’re brave."
"I’m scared," I admitted.
"Me too," he said. "But we’re scared together."
---
In the morning, we moved.
The Capital gates were open.
People everywhere. Market. Guards.
And on the wall, a banner:
`THE CHOSEN MUST BE CONTAINED FOR THE GOOD OF THE REALM`
My crown pulsed. Hot.
`_They’re afraid,_` Lunara said. `_Good._`
We split up at the gate.
Mara and Nova to cause a distraction.
Me and Kael to the dungeons.
Lyra to stay hidden with Old Kade.
"Be careful," Kael said.
"You too."
We walked into the Capital.
The heart of the enemy.
With 3 days until the Council meeting.
And this time, we weren’t running.
We were coming to burn it down.
