My birthday had come and gone, my father had ignored it as usual but Lily had taken Elise and I out for lunch and then a game of bowling before heading back to her house where her mother had made me a chocolate cake. I had struggled to hold back the tears, I hadn’t had a birthday cake since my mother was alive so for Mrs Clark to give up her time to make me one chipped away at the wall I had built around myself years ago. ‘Chocolate cake Brandon!’ Elise had squealed excitedly, her eyes shining at me, turning to Mrs Clark she added, ‘Brandon never has a cake for his birthday, he says it’s to expensive for us all to have one so only I have a cake on my birthday’.
