Daymare

Jade looks around. She’s in the hospital bed she was in when she was 5 years old having her tonsils removed. Her gaze lands on her mother sitting next to her bed humming while she works on something in her lap. Jade leans over and looks to see what her mother’s working on. She’s knitting something. Jade frowns, her mother didn’t knit. Her mother looks up at her and smiles. “There’s my beautiful girl.” “Mommy.” Jade’s mother leans forward and presses a soft kiss to her forehead. She leans back and continues to hum and knit. “Mommy. What are you doing?”  No answer. “Mommy?” Still no answer, she just continues what she’s doing. “Mommy?” Jade reaches out to touch her arm. But no matter how far she stretches she can’t reach her. She pushes herself against the bed rails, but she still can’t reach. She presses so hard the metal hurts her armpit.  She reaches down to pull off the covers and get off the bed, but she can’t lift the covers. Like they weigh too much.  She tries to wiggle out of them, but to no avail.  The covers creep up her body.  She can’t move! As they shift up her chest, it’s become harder to breathe. “Mommy!” She gasps out. She can’t breathe. She’s going to die!
