Visitor in the Hospital

664 Words
Melissa looked up from the computer she was on to see Adam walk back into their department with heavy steps. “Is everything okay?” She asked. He walks behind the counter and flops into a chair next to her. “There were complications.” He paused, then continued, “Anesthesia complications.” “What happened?” “She wouldn’t stay under. Apparently, she came to and aware a few times.” Melissa brought her hand to her mouth and covered it as she whispered, “Oh my God.” “Now she won’t come to. She’s on the fourth floor. Jake and Emmett are with her.” “At least you’re nearby.” “Yea.” He sighed, then got out of his chair. “I’m going to get a coffee or something, then let’s get to it.” Melissa nodded then returned to her work when Adam was out of eyesight. ****************************************** A few hours after Jake and Emmett settled in at her side, Jade opened her eyes. Jake quickly jumped out of his chair to grasp her hand. “Hey Jade, are you awake?” She closed her eyes, then slowly opened them again. “Yea.” She said so quietly, they almost didn’t hear her. “We were so worried about you.” “Why?” She said still so quietly. “Surgery didn’t go exactly as smoothly as they wanted. You’ve still been asleep for a few hours.” “Oh.” She said. “Jade, do you need anything?” Emmett asked. She turned her eyes to Emmett and looked him square on for a few seconds before she answered. “It hurts so much.” “We’ll get a nurse in here.” Emmett and Jake watched the exchange between the nurse and Jade with concern. Jade didn’t seem to stay conscious to answer the nurse’s questions coherently. And her voice was barely a whisper, like she didn’t have the strength to fully talk. The nurse gave her some more medicine for her pain through her IV. By the time the nurse was done, Jade’s eyes were closed again, and her breathing was regular. The nurse looked at the heart rate monitor for a few moments before turning to the men. “I think she’s asleep again. Why don’t you guys go down to the cafeteria and get some food before it closes. We’ll keep a close eye on her for you.” “Thanks.” Jake said as the nurse left. At first the guys weren’t going to leave, but they both agreed they needed food. They decided to take the nurse’s advice. ******************************************   A man with artificial salt and pepper hair sat in a tiny waiting room that was more like a corner of a hallway with some chairs and couple tables. His head didn’t move towards Emmett or Jake’s direction when they walked out of the hospital room and murmured something to the nursing staff at the nurse’s station. They gave tired smiles and walked tiredly to the elevator. When the elevator doors closed completely, the man moved. He calmly set down what he was reading and stood up. He walked purposefully down the hall then slipped into the same room that Jake and Emmett came out of. He didn’t stop or falter inside the door when he came upon the sight in the hospital bed. He strode up to the side of the bed as if he’d done it repeatedly before. He reached out and brushed the back of his fingers across the cheekbones of the young woman laying in the bed. Resisting the urge to grab her hair and pull, he leaned forward to speak quietly in her ear. “You are mine. I will find you where ever you go. You belong to no one, but me. Me!” The man stood up straight and turned towards the door. He stopped to look back at her before leaving her room, too. He then turned and walked back the direction he came from. But instead of stopping to resume what seat he was using, he walked right by the waiting area and continued down the hall. Disappearing among the labyrinth of tile and white paint. ******************************************
