Moving to ICU

708 Words
Quite some time later Adam emerged back out to the nurse’s station. His coffee was cold. He issued orders to move her to ICU. Then he reached over the counter for his laptop. He got to work on requesting orders for several, f*****g several, Xrays and MRI’s. He also had a haunch and sent off an email to the gynecologist he respected in the hospital. He told her of the patient’s basics, what he suspected needed to be looked into. What should be a short and sweet email, ended up being pretty lengthy. Now, that he knew what Jade did and the why. He looked up at Melissa who was in the middle of typing something. She felt his eyes, looked at him with an eyebrow raised. “She was in pain, Melissa. A LOT of pain. She was trying to dull her body for relief, but lost track of what she took and when. I have suspicions that she has several untreated broken bones and torn ligaments.” “Jesus.” He nodded. He turned and saw that they were prepping Jade’s equipment for moving her. He turned around and quickly glanced at Melissa. “Do I have any patients I need to see here? I want to make sure Jade is settled in ICU.” “Uhm. You have 2, but Lisa is taking care of them for you.” “Thank you. God, I owe that woman so much beer.” Melissa smiled. Adam was by far one of her favorite doctors to work with and Lisa was by far one of the best Nurse Practitioner’s she could have as her boss. She watched Adam stride into Jade’s room and help the staff ready her things. She wondered what it was, and what the guys saw in her apartment to make a handful of battle hardened stoic men tend to her so fervently. She wasn’t a drop dead beauty by normal societal standards. She didn’t look like a model straight out of a magazine. She was naturally pretty, she had high cheekbones, an angular jaw, gorgeous thick hair that was full of dark curls that women would spend hundreds for at a salon. Her lips were pretty thin, though. Melissa’s seen more men with fuller lips. But there was just something about her, even Melissa was feeling herself drawn in as she watched them pull her bed and machines through the bay curtains and turned. Adam walked at Jade’s head beside her on the left as they wheeled her through the halls and to an elevator. He kept one eye on her as they moved. Jade’s eyes were closed, but no one suspected she lost consciousness. She was pulling her lips tight and every now and then a whimper escaped her lips. Adam started paying attention to what was causing her whimpers and it didn’t take long for him to realize that every time she was jostled a bit, she whimpered in pain. They got her wheeled up to the ICU, they were directed to which room is hers and proceeded to get her all hooked up again. Adam stepped out to confer with the doc on call on the ICU floor. After an exchange of pleasantries, which felt like time waste to him. He relayed Jade’s reason for being here, her previous state of condition, what was administered, and what her state of condition is after they manhandled her to get her stable. The ICU doctor raised an eyebrow when Adam said he’d be in touch later to check in on her. Usually when patients are discharged from the ER and admitted to the hospital the attending ER doctors leave it and move on. Adam didn’t care what that asshat thought. Something was wrong about Jade’s scenario and he was determined to see it through. He knew he wasn’t the only one that felt that way, if Mitch’s request to be called was indicative enough. He rubbed his hand along his jaw as he walked back downstairs. He chose to take the stairs down, he needed to keep moving, and work through his thoughts. Just inside the door to the stairwell, he stopped. He pulled his cell phone out to send a text, but then paused. Still standing by the door, he dialed instead.
