Dozing On the Couch

Jade was released from the hospital the next day.
She had a quick psychological evaluation to make sure she didn’t suffer any trauma. The orthopedic and anesthesiologist came to discuss with her the surgery, what they did, and going forward if she has any future surgeries what she’ll have to disclaim regarding her reaction to the anesthesia.
Then her discharge papers were brought to her and signed. She was more than ready to leave. She had her fill of hospitals.
Jake wasn’t there with her and Emmett at the hospital, since he was at his workshop finishing the last day and testing for his certification. Emmett helped her gather her things and walk her out of her room. He rode with her down the elevator and out the main door.
It was a beautiful sunny morning when she walked with Emmett to his car. He took her to his and Jake’s place where he helped her get settled in their spare room with her belongings.
She was still staying with the guys on a rotation based off of who was not working, and who had the room. After the surgery debacle, they were even more set to not let her be alone during her recovery. Jade was grateful for the support. She wasn’t arguing with them and trying to turn down their help this time.
When they got to Emmett and Jake’s small rental house, Emmett helped her get her things settled in the guest room s***h office, and her toiletry things situated in the bathroom. After she had taken some more medicine, she was ready to lay down again.
Emmett got her settled on the couch with a blanket and her water. When he sat down next to her she leaned into him. He gathered her against his wide chest and perused through the tv guide to find something to watch.
She was already dozing before he picked something.

Emmett woke to a ping from his phone.
He drowsily looked at the screen. It was Jake, letting him know that he was on his way home.
Emmett looked around getting his bearings. He smiled when his eyes landed on the head of dark hair settled against him. He squeezed her gently, gave her a soft kiss, then eased out from underneath her.
He settled Jade on the couch with a blanket, he gave her another kiss before standing up.
When Jake came home, Emmett greeted him with a tight embrace. Jake gave him a kiss before hugging him tight again.
When he pulled away to set his things down, Emmett asked how he was doing.
“Were you able to test out of the class?” Emmett asked.
“Yea. Thank god the instructor understood, and knew of I’ve been following on the side.”
“I’m glad that you don’t have retake it, especially since you were absent for most of it.”
“I know, but I couldn’t stay. I was so scared.” Jake admitted.
“I think we all were. Mitch and Adam rushed over, too.”
“I’m glad they were there with us. How’s your anxiety?”
“Better now that we have her home and under our care.” Emmett answered.
“How is she?” Jake asked.
“Asleep on the couch.”
Jake peeked around Emmett into the living room.
“How long has she been asleep?” He asked as they both quietly pad over to her.
“Ever since we got home this morning.” Emmett whispers, while he reached and brushed one of her curls off her cheek.
Jake leans down and kisses her softly. He cups her cheek as he stands back up. He doesn’t speak again until they’re back in the kitchen.
“She hasn’t eaten today?”
“No. I thought about waking her to eat. But she’s actually sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb it. Plus, I was asleep most of the day with her, too.”
“It’s probably good she gets some rest. I don’t think she gets hardly any sleep at all because of her night terrors.” Jake pauses then looks his partner in the eyes.
“Emmett. You should have seen the way she looked the night she called last week.” He said quietly.
“Scared?” Emmett surmised.
“It was more than that. Like terror stricken, and she couldn’t get away from the monsters in her mind. I’ve seen it before. Not with just Jade but other trauma victims. And every time I see it, I’d like to never see it again.”
Jake looks into the living room.
“And I see it almost all the time in Jade’s eyes. Especially when she wakes up.” He paused. “But I don’t think she had a nightmare when Adam and I were with her.
“Might be a theory worth looking into.” Emmett said with a mischievous smile.
He glanced at the clock on the stove.
“I think I’ll wake her here shortly. She’s due for pain medicine and I want to stay on top of her cycle.”
“Sounds like a plan. Let’s get supper started, so that it’s almost ready when she wakes up.”
“Good idea.”

Jade vaguely heard male voice murmurings as she woke a little. But she was just so tired and comfortable she wasn’t ready to open her eyes and get up.
She heard Emmett ask Jake if he was able to test out and still get his certifications. She felt relieved to hear that he was able to test out and not have to retake the class he missed on her account.
She fell back asleep to the sound of kitchenware and food being prepared in the kitchen.
