I looked at him, waiting for a reaction. His scent was so enticing, like the smell of the soil after it storms. Rich, and full of earthy under tones. He was trying to read me, hesitant to answer. He finally sighed, nodding his head and looking at me with a coy grin.
“Alpha Mel, I have noticed it since I first saw you on those steps. I wasn’t sure you even felt it, you’ve shown no reaction to it all day.”
He looked concerned, and my heart sank. I hadn’t shown any attention to the bond, and I felt for him. He must have been confused all day. My wolf let out a hurt howl, and I closed my eyes taking a deep breath. I didn’t want to hurt him but females usually followed their mate to his pack, not the other way around.
His big brown eyes seemed to stare in to my soul, willing me to say something.
“Tony, I’ve felt it all day. It’s been eating me alive, your scent so intoxicating I wanted to jump in to your arms. However, I must reject you …”
“You want to reject me?”, his brown eyes with beautiful gold specks in them went black. “Why would you reject me!? I have alpha blood! Am I not good enough for you!?”. He stood abruptly and his chair slammed back towards the floor. I heard footsteps, Beta Connor running towards us. My wolf begged to come out, to coddle his wolf who was going crazy.
“Beta do NOT enter. He’s upset but no harm has come to me”
“Yes Alpha.”
I heard his steps retreat before making eye contact with Tony.
“It’s not that I want to Tony. I just became Alpha of the pack. I can’t go with you. After Mason, my parents lost hope for our family. I studied day and night, trained with the warriors. I worked my ass off to get here and I. Will. Not. Give. It. Up”.
He stared at me, obviously mulling things over. He sighed, rubbing his chin and letting out a small growl. “What if I stayed?”
I c****d my jaw. I was not expecting that. I leaned back in my chair and chuckled. He seemed offended, but I had no idea what I was going to say. “You’re willing to give up your pack? Your brothers? You are willing to force your pack to find someone else to train the warriors? I admire you, but I don’t think that’s what you really want.”
He was bouncing his leg, so much I swear he was shaking my chair. His eyes were intense and he let out a loud chuckle. I felt like my heart was tearing in two, he seemed so distressed and my wolf was howling like crazy. He ran his hand a through his hair, then those dark eyes seemed to stare into my soul.
“I guess you’re right. But Alpha Mel, I want you like I’ve never wanted anyone. My wolf is telling me I should just drag you back with us. However, I respect that you are doing what you need for your pack. How about a trial run?”
“Excuse me?”, I was tapping my fingers on the desk, trying to keep eye contact. I wanted to pounce this man.
“We have a week before my pack arrives. Let me follow you for your duties, get to know you. We can tell people we are just being open so the treaty is stronger? Alpha I want to know you, in the most intimate ways.”
I bit my lip and nodded. This was going to be a long week.
“Gracie can you be in my office in ten?”
“Ten? I’m already here!”, Gracie gleefully strutted into my office, looking Tony up and down then smiled at me. Beta Connor was right behind her, his face as red as a beet. She sat on my desk facing Tony, her legs crossed and a grin on her face.
“Gracie! I told you she was in a meeting!”
“Oh she’s in a meeting all right. Hi! My name is Gracie, what’s yours!?”, she stuck her hand out and Tony looked at me wide eyed and then shook her hand.
“Anthony, but everyone calls me Tony”, he leaned back, clearly uncomfortable with the energy Gracie was giving.
“Beta Connor it’s alright, I asked her to be here. She could’ve told you that” I rolled my eyes at the back of her head. Beta Connor walked out, still red in the face.
“So, tell me why we’re all in here with awkward s****l tension!”, I was burning holes through her that I knew she could feel. Tony grinned, chuckling a bit.
“Tony, this is Gracie. She was Mason’s mate before he passed. They only got to spend a few days together but she is family now none the less.”
“It’s nice to meet you Gracie. Not to seem judge mental, but the women here seem to be more … dominant that what I’m used to. Than I think what most packs are used to.”
Gracie nodded, looking down. I could feel her longing for my brother. I wanted to reach out and pull her in for a hug. Instead I just patted her pack.
“So alphaaaaa Mel, what have you call me here for?”
“Well Tony and I seem to have been mated. However, I told him I think rejecting would be our best opti-“
“MEL HOW DARE YOU! You can’t reject your mate! The Moon Goddess picked him especially for you. I will be damned if-“
“Gracie that’s why you’re here goofball. I need you to help him move his things in the room next to mine. He’s currently on the second floor. He’s going to follow me around to see how things run, and see if we can make things work”. I looked down as I was speaking. I knew father would say it made me look weak, but my wolf was yearning for her mate. I was struggling to stay contained.
Tony spoke up after many moments of silence, “If it doesn’t work I offered for her to come with me”.
If daggers could fly from eyes, Gracie’s would’ve pierced this man with a strength unknown to man. “She is OUR Alpha. She has trained for years so she could take this position, and honor her family. And Mason.”
“I see, but we’re mates. She should be following me. I’ve never heard of another male wolf leaving HIS pack. You must understand how hard this is.”
“All right Mel, reject him”
I snorted, and Tony growled in response. I stood up and walked around the desk, leaning next to where Gracie had been sitting on it.
“Either way, we have a week to decide. Why don’t you get things moved, Gracie will help. I need to fill out some paperwork, get training schedules and wolves listed for scout work. We have training first thing in the morning at 7:30am if you would like to attend. However” I looked up at the clock on the wall, “I should’ve have time for a private dinner around 8 tonight if you would like?”
“I would love that”, he smiled sweetly. His big brown eyes and intoxicating scent gave me and overwhelming urge to do him right here, right now. I kissed Gracie on the temple, and she jumped off the desk and began rambling before he’d even stood up. He followed her out of the room before looking back, and looking me up and down. The chills he gave me were sensational, and I bit my lip from letting a moan out.
I’d worked for about an hour or so when I heard a knock on the door. I could sense it was my father before he even opened the door. I looked up and smiled, and he sat in front of the desk. He looked around before giving me a sad smile.
“Melinda, I’m so proud of you being here. When Mason died, I thought it was the last chance our family had. You were determined though, and I know that Mason is smiling down upon us”.
“Thanks dad. I wish he was here. It would’ve made things so much easier. Gracie came by earlier”.
“Actually squirt, that’s why im here”.
I flinched. That nickname hadn’t been used since Mason passed. My heart stung a little, but I also felt a sense of peace. That was Mason’s favorite thing to call me. I felt my eyes get glassy as I looked at my father. The small smile he had told me all I needed to know about how he was feeling.
When we lost Mason, we all lost a big part of us. He was sunshine personified. After losing him shortly after he found his mate, I knew my parents became fearful about when I found mine. The rogue that killed him was actually after Gracie. As a female Alpha, my parents are worried of how people will try to drag me down. It was one of my main fights I had with my mom, she still wants me to step down.
“What did Gracie say?”
“That you found your mate”, his grin shrank more. “She said that you are giving him a week, then he can decide to stay. Gracie was pretty heated he wanted you to leave. But Mel, finding your mate is powerful. The bond isn’t like anything you’ve ever felt, or probably will ever. If he doesn’t stay…”, he rubbed the back of his neck looking down. “I think you should go”.
I felt like I’d been shot, that I had been betrayed. I worked so hard for this and now he wants me to give it up because of some stubborn mate!? I wasn’t going to leave. I earned my title. I will carry on our name, and I will do it for Mason. I will do it for me.
“No. I will not go.”
“Mel, I -“
“It’s Alpha Mel, and you may go. I’m done with this conversation today”.
I refused to look at him, and stood up to the window looking at the weeping willows that sat behind the pack house. I felt him grasp my shoulder and give a small squeeze, then he left. I say there for who knows how long, watching the willows sway. I wished Mason was here to tell me what to do. The fact my dad told me to give my hard work up made me feel so alone. Emptiness was sitting on my heart. I sat down in my chair going back to the work I was doing before, and heard a soft knock on the door.
My heart seemed to fill with joy as my nose filled with the earthy scent I didn’t know I was craving.
“Gracie set us up a private dinner. She’s pretty upset you hadn’t come down to eat it.”
Tony eyed me cautiously, probably trying to feel me out. I looked up at the clock and it was 10:30, I sighed loudly and rubbed my temples. “I’m so sorry I’ve been busy and I …”
He began to walk over briskly and I looked up at him, before he leaned down and planted a passionate kiss on my lips. “I’ve been waiting to do that all day”.
