CHAPTER SEVEN

The days following Daniel’s discovery passed in a haze of forced smiles and suppressed anger. He watched Ethan and Olivia with a quiet intensity, his gaze lingering on every subtle glance they exchanged, every moment of awkward silence between them. He felt like an outsider in his own life, a spectator to a play where the actors thought their secrets were hidden. But Daniel saw everything now. And the more he observed, the more the anger and betrayal festered. He didn’t confront them immediately—no, he wanted the truth, the full extent of their deceit, before he acted. --- Ethan sat at the edge of the dock by the lake, the water’s surface shimmering under the late afternoon sun. The peaceful setting did little to calm the storm within him. His phone buzzed beside him, and he glanced at the screen. A message from Olivia: "Can we meet tonight? We need to talk." Ethan hesitated before typing a reply. "Not here. The clearing in the woods, 8 PM." He tossed the phone onto the dock and leaned back, running his hands through his hair. Every choice he had made since that night felt like a step further into quicksand. The harder he tried to extricate himself, the deeper he sank. Daniel’s words from the other day echoed in his mind. "I’m not blind. Something’s going on, and I’m going to find out what it is." Ethan’s stomach churned. He didn’t want to imagine the fallout if Daniel discovered the truth. But as much as he feared Daniel’s anger, he couldn’t deny the pull he felt toward Olivia. It was maddening, consuming—a connection he couldn’t sever, no matter how hard he tried. --- Olivia stood in front of the mirror, her reflection a stranger. Her usually bright eyes were dull, shadowed by sleepless nights and relentless guilt. She thought of Daniel, his kindness, his unwavering love, and felt a pang of shame so deep it threatened to break her. She’d told herself that the kiss with Ethan was a mistake, an anomaly, but that lie had crumbled the moment she realized how much she wanted to see him again. That want terrified her. How could she love Daniel and still feel this way about Ethan? Her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. She saw Ethan’s message and felt a knot form in her stomach. Meeting him felt like both salvation and doom. --- In the workshop, Daniel meticulously sharpened a chisel, the repetitive motion grounding him as his thoughts spiraled. He had been careful, patient, gathering evidence piece by piece. Ethan’s truck parked too often by the woods. Olivia’s nervous energy whenever Ethan was around. The text message. It was all coming together now, an ugly truth he could no longer ignore. He would confront them tonight, expose their betrayal and force them to face the consequences of their actions. --- The woods were cloaked in shadows as Olivia arrived at the clearing, her heart pounding in her chest. She spotted Ethan leaning against a tree, his expression mirroring her own turmoil. “Olivia,” he began, his voice low, “we can’t keep doing this.” She nodded, tears welling in her eyes. “I know. But I don’t know how to stop. I don’t know how to go back to the way things were.” Ethan stepped closer, his hand brushing hers. “I feel the same way. But this—whatever this is—it’s destroying us. It’s destroying Daniel.” At the mention of Daniel, Olivia broke. A sob escaped her, and Ethan pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as she cried. They stayed that way for a moment, two people caught in a whirlwind of emotions they couldn’t control. Neither noticed the figure standing in the shadows, watching them. --- Daniel’s fists clenched as he watched his wife in his brother’s arms. The scene before him was a confirmation of his worst fears, a betrayal so profound it left him trembling with rage. He stepped into the clearing, his presence like a thunderclap that shattered the moment. “What the hell is this?” Daniel’s voice was low, dangerous, the fury barely contained. Ethan and Olivia sprang apart, their faces pale as they turned to face him. “Daniel—” Olivia began, her voice trembling. “Don’t,” he snapped, his eyes blazing. “Don’t you dare try to explain this.” Ethan stepped forward, his hands raised as if to placate him. “Daniel, let me—” “Shut up!” Daniel roared, his voice echoing through the trees. “You’re my brother, Ethan. My brother. How could you do this to me?” Ethan’s shoulders slumped, guilt written all over his face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” “Didn’t mean for what to happen?” Daniel demanded. “For you to betray me? For you to sneak around with my wife behind my back?” Olivia stepped forward, tears streaming down her face. “Daniel, please, it wasn’t planned. It just… happened.” Daniel turned on her, his voice cold. “Don’t. Don’t you dare try to justify this.” The three of them stood in silence, the weight of their emotions crashing down like a tidal wave. Finally, Daniel spoke again, his voice laced with pain. “I trusted you both,” he said, his voice breaking. “You were the two people I thought would never hurt me. And now… now I don’t even know who you are.” --- The walk back to the house was suffocating, the tension between the three of them thick enough to cut with a knife. Daniel went straight to the workshop, slamming the door behind him. Olivia and Ethan stood in the living room, the enormity of what had just happened sinking in. “What do we do now?” Olivia whispered, her voice trembling. Ethan shook his head, his eyes fixed on the floor. “I don’t know.” Upstairs, Daniel sat in the workshop, his head in his hands. The anger had given way to a deep, aching sadness. He thought of the years he had spent building a life with Olivia, the bond he had shared with Ethan. All of it felt like a lie now, a fragile illusion shattered by their betrayal. But beneath the sadness, a spark of determination began to grow. He wouldn’t let them destroy him. He wouldn’t let their actions define him. Daniel stood, his jaw set. He didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was certain—things would never be the same again.
