Episode 6: The first move

Kira didn’t check her phone immediately. She told herself she wouldn’t. Even after she retrieved it from where it had been charging, even after she noticed the new notification sitting quietly on her screen. She didn’t open it. Not right away. Tatiana was still talking. Still laughing. Still replaying everything like it was light. Like it was simple. But Kira was elsewhere. Her fingers hovered over her phone. Then finally, she opened it. Unknown Number. A single message. Unknown: You hesitated. Kira blinked. That was it? No “hi.” No introduction. Just that. Her lips pressed together slightly. Of course he noticed. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, then pulled back. She wasn’t going to reply immediately. She locked her phone. Put it down. Picked it up again. Unlocked it. Read the message again. You hesitated. Her chest tightened slightly, not out of fear, but something else. Awareness. He wasn’t guessing. He was stating. And he was right. Tatiana leaned over suddenly. “Who is it?” she asked, trying to peek. Kira tilted the phone away. “No one.” Tatiana narrowed her eyes. “That’s him, isn’t it?” Kira didn’t answer. Which was answer enough. “Read it,” Tatiana insisted. Kira hesitated, then handed her the phone. Tatiana read it. Paused. Then looked up slowly. “Oh, he’s dangerous.” Kira frowned slightly. “What do you mean?” Tatiana handed the phone back. “That’s not a normal first text.” Kira looked at the message again. No, it wasn’t. “It’s like…” Tatiana continued, thinking. “He’s already inside your head.” Kira didn’t like how accurate that sounded. ⸻ Later that evening, alone. Kira stared at her phone again. The message hadn’t changed. But her thoughts had. What does he expect me to say to that? Was she supposed to: deny it? admit it? ignore it? She typed. Kira: About what? She stared at it. Hhmmm Too defensive. Deleted. Typed again. Kira: I didn’t hesitate. She paused. That felt like a lie. Deleted. She sighed softly, dropping her phone onto the bed. Why am I thinking this much? Because it wasn’t just a message. It was a test. And she knew it. Kira picked up her phone again. Read it one more time. You hesitated. Her thumb hovered over the keyboard, then finally, she typed. Kira: And you noticed. She stared at it. Simple. Neutral. Not denying. Not confirming. Just… acknowledging. Her heart beat a little faster. Then she sent it. The message delivered instantly. And for the first time Kira felt it. That subtle shift. The moment where something begins, and there’s no taking it back. Three dots appeared almost immediately. Typing. Kira sat up slightly. Watching. Waiting. Then his reply came. Ezekiel: I notice everything. Kira froze. There it was again. That tone. Calm. Certain. Unapologetic. Her fingers tightened slightly around her phone. A small breath left her lips. She should stop here. She knew she should. But instead,She typed again.Kira stared at the screen. I notice everything. The words didn’t feel like a statement. They felt like a warning. Or maybe, an invitation. Her thumb hovered over the keyboard. She could stop. She should stop. But instead, she typed. Kira: That sounds a little intense. She watched the message send. A second passed. Two. Then… Ezekiel is typing… Too fast. Ezekiel: Does it bother you? Kira’s brows pulled together slightly. He’s not explaining. He’s pushing. She shifted on her bed, sitting up now, her back resting lightly against the headboard. Her fingers moved again. Kira: I don’t know yet. This time, the reply took longer. Long enough for her to think. Maybe that was too vague. Maybe I should’ve said something else. Ezekiel: You hesitate when you’re unsure. Kira blinked. Her grip on the phone tightened slightly. Why does he keep doing that? Not asking. Observing. She inhaled slowly. Kira: And you assume a lot. Sent. This time, he didn’t reply immediately. The silence stretched. And for the first time since the conversation started Kira felt it. That slight shift. Is he done? Did I say too much? Her mind started filling in gaps, creating outcomes, overanalyzing. Just then he texted again. Ezekiel: Not assumptions. A pattern. Her lips parted slightly. A pattern. Kira leaned her head back against the wall. He’s studying me. And somehow, that didn’t make her uncomfortable. It made her aware. She typed slower this time. More deliberate. Kira: So what else have you noticed? There it was. A shift. She felt it as soon as she sent it. She wasn’t just responding anymore. She was engaging. The typing bubble appeared almost instantly. Ezekiel: You don’t go out much. Kira’s eyes narrowed slightly. That was from earlier… Ezekiel: But you’re curious about things you haven’t experienced. Her breath slowed. Ezekiel: You think more than you say. Kira swallowed. Ezekiel: And you don’t like being read that easily. Silence. Her heart was beating faster now, not out of fear, but something sharper. Recognition. He wasn’t wrong. And that, was the problem. Kira stared at the screen. She could deny it. Deflect. End the conversation. But instead… Kira: You’re very confident in your observations. A pause. Then it came again Ezekiel: I wouldn’t say it if I wasn’t sure. Her lips pressed together. Of course you wouldn’t. She thought. She shifted again, pulling one leg up onto the bed, resting her elbow against her knee. Her next message came slower. Kira: And what do you plan to do with all that information? This time, there was no delay. Ezekiel: That depends. Kira’s brows furrowed slightly. Kira: On what? The typing bubble appeared. Disappeared. Then appeared again. Like he was choosing his words. And that alone, made her pay more attention. Ezekiel: On whether you’re just curious… or if you actually want to find out. Kira froze. There it was. Not direct. Not explicit. But clear enough. Her heart skipped, just once. And suddenly, this didn’t feel like a casual conversation anymore. It felt like a line. One she hadn’t fully crossed yet, but was standing very close to. Kira stared at the message for a long moment. Her thoughts slowed. What am I doing? She could still step back. Laugh it off. End it here. But instead, her fingers moved. Kira: Find out what? The message sent. And this time, Ezekiel didn’t reply immediately. The silence stretched longer than before. And for the first time Kira felt it. Anticipation. Not the anxious kind. The kind that lingers. Builds. The kind that makes you stay. Her phone lit up again. Ezekiel: How far your curiosity goes. Kira’s breath caught softly. There it was. The hook. Subtle. But firm. She stared at the screen, longer this time. Because now, she understood something clearly. This wasn’t random. This wasn’t casual. And it definitely wasn’t simple. This, was the beginning of a game. And without realizing when it happened, Kira had already made her first move.
