Angelo Fuentebella. How could Javier ever forget that man? The man who destroyed his life, who was willing to do anything to take everything away from him? Javier had countless bad experiences with Angelo Fuentebella, experiences that shaped him into the man he was today.
"Why do you look so shocked? What's going on?" Veronica asked, puzzled.
Javier stared at the woman in front of him. She was just a human—weak, without any physical abilities. How could Angelo Fuentebella have tried to take her life? How could he have had the conscience to harm a defenseless woman?
The severely damaged face she bore now was solid proof of how evil Angelo Fuentebella had become. Javier had once hoped that Angelo might change, but perhaps a demon never changes. Even in his last breath, Angelo would remain a demon. Javier shouldn't be surprised.
His heart filled with even more pity for Veronica. Yes, he knew he shouldn't get too close to a human. He was a werewolf, and they were different species. Moreover, he was an Alpha King. If anyone found out about what he was doing, it would set a poor example.
But he couldn't just stay silent and let a defenseless woman suffer at the hands of a demon. Veronica needed him more than ever now. She needed his help. And he wasn't going to abandon her.
Maybe fate brought them together because they both had grievances against Angelo Fuentebella—a devil of a man.
There was no reason for Javier to deny it. Maybe it was time to reveal his true identity to Veronica. That way, she might trust him more.
He nodded. “Yes, I know Angelo Fuentebella.”
Fear flooded Veronica's eyes. She assumed Javier was allied with her husband. She hurriedly ran towards the door, but Javier, using his werewolf speed, was in front of her in the blink of an eye.
“H-How did you do that?” Veronica was shocked by his speed.
Javier sighed and placed both hands on her shoulders. “Calm down, Veronica. I’m not your enemy. I know your husband, Angelo Fuentebella, but not in the way you’re thinking.”
She felt a bit relieved, though there was still some doubt in her heart. “T-Then, why do you know my husband?”
This is it. He needed to confess the truth if he wanted her to trust him. It would be unfair if she revealed her entire life while knowing nothing about him. “Because your husband has done a lot of evil to me. He almost ruined my life, my company, and the woman I once cared about. I can never forgive him,” he said, his voice laced with anger.
Veronica was shocked. She hadn’t expected that. The world was indeed small.
"Angelo Fuentebella has always been a demon. But I thought one day he’d meet his match. Apparently not. As time passed, he only became more evil. As long as no one stands up to him, your husband's wickedness will never stop," the man said seriously.
She grimaced, feeling disgusted by the term they were using. She didn’t want to think of Angelo as her "husband" anymore. "Let’s stop calling him my husband. He doesn't deserve to be one! He’s a demon. He killed me! If you hadn’t come, he’d probably be laughing over my corpse right now!"
Javier nodded. "You’re right. I like that you said that, Veronica. A husband’s role is to lead and protect his wife. And obviously, Angelo isn’t like that. It’s a shame to call him a husband."
"And he’s not just any demon. He’s a monster...! I know you’ll laugh at me, but I’m not joking. I’m not making this up. I’m not delusional. Angelo isn’t human... he’s a monster! He’s a werewolf! He’s incredibly strong, so when he tried to kill me that night, I didn’t stand a chance because he had strength beyond that of a human!" she shouted, praying that Javier would believe her.
Javier’s expression remained calm. "I believe you. Don’t worry."
She gasped. Javier believed her right away? "R-Really? You believe me? You don’t think I’m crazy?"
Javier just laughed. "Yes, I believe you. And no, I don’t think you’re crazy."
Veronica felt relieved. It was a good thing Javier believed her.
"But I want to correct you on something," the man added. "Not all of that kind are monsters. Not all of them are evil. They might look terrifying, but goodness lies in the heart. They didn’t choose to be born into this world as something other than human, just like animals."
She was puzzled. What was Javier trying to say? She didn’t understand. "Are you defending Angelo? I thought you said you hated him?" She was starting to feel irritated.
Javier looked like he had no choice and sat back in the swivel chair he was sitting in earlier. He seemed exhausted by their conversation. "I’m not defending that demon Angelo Fuentebella. Every part of my being despises him. I’m talking about his kind. He’s a werewolf. And not all werewolves are evil."
She had her doubts. In movies and TV shows, werewolves were portrayed as evil, eating humans and using their physical strength to get what they wanted. She never imagined that werewolves could actually exist in real life—and that her husband was one of them.
"I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with you on this, Javier. How can you be so sure that not all werewolves are evil? And these aren’t just werewolves you find in the jungle or the wild. They’re shape-shifters. They can take on human form, and they can also become werewolves. Now, tell me they’re not dangerous creatures. What proof do you have of that?" she challenged.
One corner of Javier’s lips lifted at Veronica’s question. "Do you really want proof that not all werewolves are evil?"
"Yes," she answered boldly.
"Fine. If I prove to you that not all werewolves are evil, what will you do? What can you promise me?" Javier challenged.
She thought for a few seconds. What could she promise? She didn’t know how to answer, but she was sure that werewolves were evil. "Well, if you can prove that to me, I’m willing to face their entire tribe and apologize. If it’s true that not all of them are bad, they’ll let me leave their territory alive, right?"
Veronica knew that what she was saying was nearly impossible.
Javier smiled, liking her answer. "Good answer. I like it."
"What if I’m right? What are you willing to promise me?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"If you prove you’re right, well, I’m willing to kill all my pack members. I will betray my pack for you," Javier responded seriously, shocking her.
Confusion spread across Veronica’s face. "K-Kill all your pack members...? Betray your pack...? W-What do you mean, Javier...?"
The man didn’t answer; instead, she slowly started to see his form change. His skin sprouted fur, his ears shifted, and the shape of his face began to alter.
Her heart filled with fear. "J-Javier, what is the meaning of this...?" She felt like she was going to wet herself where she stood.
Did this mean that Javier was a monster too? Had she fallen into her husband’s trap? She might have escaped from Angelo, but would she now die at Javier’s hands?
Before his transformation was complete, Javier spoke. "Veronica, I am a werewolf. I’m the Alpha King of the Black Moon Pack."
