Who indeed had committed this heinous crime against Veronica? That was the big question weighing on Javier's mind. He wanted to know the whole story because he believed it would help him understand Veronica better and provide the appropriate assistance she needed.
Nick and Jordan, noticing the serious nature of their conversation, politely excused themselves and headed into the villa, leaving Veronica and Javier alone in the vast garden.
Veronica was at a loss for words. Was she ready to tell Javier everything? But the bigger question was, would he believe her?
A cold breeze swept through, chilling her to the core. Javier noticed the hesitation on her face. "If you're not ready, I understand," he said gently.
She felt a pang of guilt. She knew she had to be honest with Javier, even if he might not believe her. He deserved the truth, especially since he was only trying to help her out of kindness.
"C-Can we talk about this inside? I'm not comfortable out here," she finally said.
She saw the relief and surprise cross Javier's face, as if he hadn’t expected her to respond positively. "You're right. It's not good for your face to be exposed to the wind, even with the bandages on. Let's go inside," he agreed.
He gently took her by the elbow, guiding her with care. She almost froze in place. She couldn't remember a time when the man she once placed on a pedestal had ever done something like this for her.
As she entered the villa, she was greeted by its vintage interior design. She wasn't an expert in antiques, but she could tell that the value of everything around her was high. From the living room set, the curtains, the paintings, to the various decorative elements adorning the walls.
"Wow, this place is stunning," she said in awe. Her voice echoed in the entertainment area, proof of how large the villa was.
“Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I didn't expect you to appreciate the old style,” Javier responded.
“The old style of your villa is beautiful. It’s vintage. I can’t believe such a large place like this has no one living in it. Rich people really are different,” she remarked, realizing too late that she might have overstepped.
Javier didn’t seem offended by her comment. “It’s far from my parents' house and our businesses. I bought it to use as a vacation home, for important events or when clients want to take a break. You know, for business purposes. Plus, real estate is a great investment. The land’s value doesn’t depreciate.”
He led her to the dining area and kitchen, and she lost count of how many times she said “wow.” She felt like a child in awe. “This place is amazing. You’re really wealthy, Javier.”
He scratched his head, a bit bashful. “There are people far wealthier than I am. I was just lucky to be born with a golden spoon. But of course, I work hard too. I’ve sacrificed a lot of things as well. Effort and dedication,” he added.
She admired his dedication. "Anyway, let’s get back to business. Let’s go to the library so we can talk seriously, just the two of us. I want to know who did this to you. I mean... I have the right to know, right? Or am I asking for too much?”
Her eyes widened, and she shook her head. “What? No... you’re not asking for too much. I understand, and I’m ready to tell you everything.”
He smiled and guided her to the library. She was almost overwhelmed when she saw the towering bookshelves that reached nearly three times the height of an average person. There was even a long wooden ladder there. The library was filled with books, making her feel like she had stepped into a fantasy movie because of its beauty.
There was also an office table and chair, along with comfortable couches. Anyone who wanted to read a book there would certainly be able to focus and find peace of mind. “This place is amazing, Javier. Did you know I love reading books? I don’t think I’d ever have something like this, even in my dreams,” she murmured in awe.
“It’s not obvious that I’m into books, right? I’m a bookworm too. I love reading, especially when I’m alone. You’re going to stay here for a while because after the surgery, you’ll need to rest and recover well. So, you’re welcome to stay in my cozy library. You can read my books here,” he offered with a smile.
She immediately felt a surge of excitement. She couldn’t even remember the last time she had the chance to read a book. “Thank you, Javier.”
“No worries. You’re welcome. Anyway, have a seat.” He pointed to the couch across from the office table.
Javier swiveled around and sat in the chair. Veronica couldn't help but scrutinize the man's appearance. She would be a hypocrite if she said Javier wasn't a gorgeous man. He was incredibly handsome, the kind of guy often cast in superhero movies. That was how he appeared to her. And not only that, he was also extremely wealthy, kind, and professional. She never imagined she would meet someone like him. She felt grateful.
Javier propped his elbow on the office table and rested his chin in his hand. This made him look even more attractive to her. Now, he seemed like a sexy boss.
“Can you tell me now?” he began, looking directly at her.
She cleared her throat to get rid of the lump forming there. What the hell was she thinking? How embarrassing! They were in the library for Javier to learn the truth about her accident, not for her to daydream!
“Well… to be honest, Javier. I don't know how to start my story. I'm afraid you might not believe me,” she admitted.
He waved his hand in the air dismissively. “Nonsense. I trust you, Veronica. Just go on. I want to hear your story.”
She took a deep breath, gathering all the courage she could muster. “Javier…”
“Who did this to you, Veronica?”
She squeezed her eyes shut. She needed to steel herself, even if it meant forcing herself to relive the cruel events of her life. “The one who committed this crime against me is none other than my husband.”
Veronica saw how Javier's jaw dropped in shock.
