Chapter 10: Allies and Enemies

1219 Words
At 11:37 p.m., Harriet sat on the edge of her bed, letting out a tired sigh. The day’s demands weighed on her, and a persistent pain lingered on her back as she tried to relax. Just then, her phone buzzed on the bedside table. The sudden vibration made her jump. The intrusion shattered the silence in the room. She glanced over, her pulse quickening, as she saw the notification from her legal team. The preview message read: "We’ve made progress. Meet us tomorrow to discuss the next steps." Harriet’s fingers hesitated over the screen, a mix of relief and anxiety swelling within her. The next morning, Harriet arrived at the office to find a fresh crisis waiting for her. Someone had tipped off the media about the investigation into Arthur. A leak? Her stomach twisted as she read the message. Her mind raced as she quickly dialed her lawyer’s number. “What happened?” Harriet demanded, her voice tense. “We have no way of knowing who leaked the information,” her lawyer said, his voice calm. “But it’s already spreading. The media are running the story, and Arthur’s team is preparing a response.” Harriet closed her eyes, frustration and anger flooding her. "What's our next move?" she asked, her voice tight with tension. “We are moving forward as planned,” her lawyer replied. “But you need to prepare for Arthur’s response. He will not take this lying down.” Harriet ends the call, her hands trembling with anger. Someone on her team had leaked the investigation, and the sting of betrayal burned inside her. She gripped the edge of her desk, her mind racing with questions. Who could have done this? As the day progressed, the news of the investigation spread fast. Reporters were calling Fidelis Tech nonstop, seeking comments, statements, anything that might add to the developing story. Harriet's public relations team worked overtime to control the situation, but the damage had already been done. By afternoon, Arthur’s legal team issued a public statement, dismissing the allegations as “baseless” and accusing Harriet of leading a smear campaign to undermine his business. Harriet could feel the weight of the situation crashing down on her. Thoughts raced through her mind, each one sharper than the last. How did it come to this? The question kept repeating, growing louder. How has she gone from running a successful company to fighting enemies? The more she thought about it, the more frustrated she felt. As the sun set, Harriet felt exhausted. She sat in her office, looking at the city lights outside her window, wondering how much longer she could continue like that. Just then, her phone buzzed with a new message. It was Darren. We need to talk. Meet me tonight. Harriet let out a deep sigh, the weight of her thoughts heavy on her chest as she reluctantly acknowledged that Darren was right. She can’t face this battle alone. But trusting him felt like a risky bet, one she wasn’t sure she could afford. She took a deep breath, grabbed her coat and headed towards the door. The drive to meet Darren felt endless, the tension of the past few days tightening around her chest. With every turn of the wheel, she questioned her decision to trust him. As she stepped into the restaurant, the click of her heels echoed through the silence. She spotted Darren in a secluded corner, sipping his usual glass of whiskey. “Harriet,” he greeted her as she sat down. "You've gone through a lot this week." Harriet met his gaze. “Cut the small talk, Darren. I assume you’ve already heard about the leak.” Darren raised an eyebrow, a subtle smile playing on his lips. “Of course. The media are having a great time. It’s all over the financial news.” Harriet tightened her fists. “I need to know if you were involved in it,” Harriet said, her voice sharp. “Did you leak the investigation to the press?” Darren’s smile faded, his expression hardening. “I played no part in the leak, Harriet.” “Then who did?” Harriet demanded, her frustration boiling over. “Someone on my team betrayed me, and I need to know who.” Darren studied her for a moment, his eyes narrowing. “You’re looking in the wrong direction. The leak is not from your team.” Harriet’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?” “I mean,” Darren said, leaning forward slightly, his voice dropping to a low tone, “the leak came from Arthur’s camp.” Harriet stared at him in disbelief. “Arthur? But why would Arthur leak information about his own investigation? That makes no sense.” Darren took a sip of his whiskey, eyes locked on her. “It makes sense. Arthur’s always one step ahead. By leaking the info, he controls the story. He plays the victim, claims you’re behind a smear campaign, and uses the leak to cover up his current crimes.” Harriet’s mind raced as she processed Darren’s words, frustration washing over her. “What should I do now?” Harriet asked, her voice calm. “Darren leaned back in his chair, his face serious. ‘Shift the focus.’” “And how am I supposed to do that?” "Use what you’ve got, but don’t reveal everything. Arthur will expect you to strike back. If you time it right, you can take him by surprise. Release the details gradually, keeping him under pressure. The longer he’s forced to defend himself, the more likely he makes mistakes." Harriet’s thoughts raced, her pulse quickening with a mix of unease and determination. “I’ll do it,” she said, her voice steady. “I’ll turn the tables on him.” Darren smiled, lifting his glass in a silent toast. “That’s the spirit. I knew you had it in you.” They sat in silence, the weight of their conversation thick in the air. Harriet's mind raced as she planned her next steps, considering how to reclaim control. Yet doubt gnawed at her thoughts. “You’re helping me now,” Harriet cuts through the silence, her gaze steady. “But what’s your endgame? What do you really want?” Darren’s smile vanished, his face turning serious. He leaned forward, his voice dropping low. “I want what you want, Harriet. To take Arthur down. But beyond that? I want what’s mine. Arthur has spent years crushing everyone, including me. This isn’t just business. It’s personal.” Harriet stared at him. "I see," she said, her mind racing with the weight of his words. “You don’t have to trust me, Harriet, but as long as Arthur is in the picture, you’re in danger. The moment you make a move against him, he’ll come after you with everything he’s got. You need me.” A chill crept over her skin, and her heart pounded in her chest. She held his gaze, forcing calm into her voice. "I’ll keep that in mind," she replied, though unease flickered beneath her steady voice. Darren smiled, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes. "Good. I’ll be in touch." With that, he rose, leaving Harriet alone in the stunned silence.
