“Take the next turn," I instructed the taxi driver who did as he was told and took a wrong turn which the car behind also took. I exhaled deeply.
“Stop the car," I said and the car stopped. I opened my bag and reached for my pepper spray as I got out of the taxi. The other car stopped and a man in a tuxedo got down from the driver's seat.
Oh, wait! It was the same guy from last night. The same guy who was sent by his boss to drop me off.
I walked briskly towards him and raised the pepper spray towards him but he was fast enough to hold my hands and snatch it away from me.
“I’m sorry I didn't mean to scare you, ma'am. I'm not here to hurt you.” He said and I stared at him, trying to observe him.
" Why are you following me?” I asked. He cleared his throat as he was reluctant to speak.
" I was sent by my boss to find out where you live.” He answered as I gulped.
" And who's your boss?" I asked.
“Did Mr Presley send you?" I asked again, referring to Ivey's Dad. He chuckled lightly and nodded negatively.
" I'm not supposed to say, ma'am.” He said and I took a few steps backwards.
" Stop following me. Or I'll call the cops.” I said and with that, I got into the taxi and we drove off.
A WEEK LATER(Aunt Zelda’s Residence)
I had already started the housekeeping job at Aunt Zelda's place. She gave me a room to stay in just in case I was done with work and needed a place to rest before lunch and dinner. I was practically doing the cooking and the housekeeping.
I had already set Aunt Zelda's breakfast on the dining table in the dining room when she walked into the sitting room fully dressed for work and was on a call. She caught me staring and I quickly averted my eyes as she walked to the dining room.
“Give me a minute Mr Miguez, I'll call you back." She said and ended the call. The name she called sounded familiar and I tried to recall where I heard that name from. But I shoved it aside as nothing was coming to mind.
“This looks good. But I'm almost late to the office." She said and I frowned. I always loved to see her reaction whenever she ate meals cooked by myself.
“Or why don't you bring lunch to my office? I'll have something on my way." She suggested it as she noticed my reaction to these words.
“Would that be okay?" I asked nervously and she smiled.
“Why not?" She said with a light chuckle and took a glance at me from head to toe. I was on a comfy shirt and trousers.
" Wear something presentable while coming. I'll talk to the driver.” She said and I nodded, playing with my shirt nervously.
It was already 1 pm as I got down from the car.
“I'll be right back," I told Aunt Zelda's driver
and stood in front of her company. It was a very massive company. I shouldn't be surprised that the Minister of Justice had something this big to come back to.
I walked into the company with her food well packed in my hand and put a call through to her. She sent a receptionist who led me to her office.
“You can come in, Diane." She said after I knocked. I carefully opened the door and walked in. I stopped dead in my tracks immediately and my gaze met with that of the same guy I met at Scarlett's birthday party, the one that never apologized for bumping into me. I averted my eyes and looked sideways and saw Aunt Zelda who smiled at me.
“You can drop it over there.” She said pointing towards where he sat. She had a table and chairs facing each other at the center of her office. I nodded, walked to where he sat and carefully placed the bag on the table in front of me. I looked up only to see him staring deep into my eyes.
“I'm Alec Miguez. The CEO of Miguez." He introduced himself and I looked up at him. The CEO of the second-richest Luxury brand in the world was right in front of me. He stretched his hands out for a handshake.
I bit my lower lip staring at his hands and took it.
“Diane," I said and broke my hands from his. He still kept staring at me, as if trying to figure me out by staring. I adjusted, trying to avoid his gaze. He sighed.
“I’ll take my leave now Aunt Zelda." He said and I stared at her while he left. She noticed my reaction and smiled.
" He's my nephew Diane.” She said and I muttered an “ohh".
LATER THAT NIGHT
I had kept Aunt Zelda's dinner in the dining room and was ready to leave. I walked to her bedroom and attempted to knock when I heard my name. She was on a call. So I stood there eavesdropping.
“I don't think she's aware that Mr Gray was murdered." She said and I almost lost my balance as tears pricked my eyes. His autopsy revealed he died of a heart attack. This isn't right.
I pushed her door open and she quickly faced me.
“What do you mean by my Dad was murdered?” I asked and she ended the call she was on.
“You poor thing. You shouldn't have heard that." She said, walking towards me but I took a few steps backward and sniffed.
***
I sat quietly in the taxi on my way home lost in thoughts. How come I didn't see the signs that my father was murdered? Aunt Zelda said he had a lot of people who wanted him dead because he wasn't much of a saint himself.
I ran my hands through my hair with a sigh. This wasn't right. Whoever had a hand in my father's death had to pay. The taxi stopped in front of my house and I got down, paid and walked towards the house.
I saw the door open and stopped. This usually happens when something goes wrong. I exhaled deeply and walked into the house, and what I saw made me gasp, falling to the ground as tears began to flow freely down my cheeks. I covered my mouth, crying as I faced Mom's lifeless body on the floor with my sister right next to her, covered in blood.
“We need to get the hell out of here." I heard a familiar voice say but I was still lost staring at Mom, crying my heart out.
“The police are on their way to get you." The familiar voice yelled and I looked up. It was the last face I expected to see.
“Alec Miguez?" I called. I was utterly confused. Why was he here? How did he find me? These were the questions running through my head as I looked up at him.
He helped me get up to my feet. Walked over to my sister, who quietly stared at Mom, and helped her up. I rushed into the room, grabbed a few clothes without thinking, and rushed out of the house. He helped the both of us into his car, got in, and drove off.
The drive was a silent one until he broke the silence.
“I just wanted to know where you live. I didn't know you were trouble." He said and I faced him. He was focused on the road with his face deadpan.
“So where am I taking you to? My place or Aunt Zelda's?" He asked. Was that even a question? Then it dawned on me. I had just left Mom's dead body at home.
“Take me back," I said simply. He looked at me and faced the road.
“Are you insane?" He asked amidst a chuckle.
“Look, whoever killed that woman, clearly wanted to pin the murder on you. Say no more. I'm taking you to Aunt Zelda's place." He said and I went silent. He was right. But are we just going to leave mom there?
AUNT ZELDA'S RESIDENCE
We drove into her compound and saw her pacing to and fro. She was making some calls.
“Take her out of there before the cops find her body." I heard her say that to the person over the phone.
We got out of the car and she rushed towards us. She dropped her hands on Gabby's shoulder and stared at the both of us.
“Are you both okay? I heard what happened." She asked while I star
ed at Alec Miguez whose eyes never left mine.
What could someone like him possibly want from someone like me?
