Chapter Thirteen: Yes Mother.

OV: Travis Moonblood The hall still hummed with echoes of ceremony, but I moved past it, drawn toward my mother’s private chambers. Candlelight carved her face into long shadows, precise and still. She did not rise when I entered. That was her greeting. Control, quieted to perfection. “Did you notice him?” Her voice was soft, almost idle, but it carried weight. “Yes,” I said. My pulse caught without permission. I could not lie to her—not fully, not here. She leaned back in her chair, fingertips tracing the edge of the desk. “Good. That… attention, you will carry it with you. Always.” I swallowed. “Yes, Mother.” Her eyes moved over me slowly, unblinking, as if weighing every heartbeat. “He is not like the others. You understand that?” “I understand,” I murmured. My hands were still, obedient. My shoulders straight. “And yet,” she said, voice barely above the candle’s flicker, “he cannot be allowed to grow without… guidance. Subtle. Controlled.” “Yes, Mother,” I repeated, tighter this time. A thrill, cold and obedient, tightened in my chest. She smiled, a thin arc that held patience older than mountains. Not affection. Not warmth. Just calculation. The kind that could wait decades for a single opportunity. “You will watch. Learn. Provoke when necessary. And if it comes to it…” Her voice lingered, and I knew enough. “Ensure that nothing, nothing, threatens what is being set into motion.” “Yes, Mother,” I said again. I could feel the weight of it, the invisible lines of power she had drawn around me. I would follow them without question. The room held a silence after that, a quiet like a blade resting on a stone floor. Every breath measured, every movement considered. I bowed my head slightly, folding my obedience into myself like armor. Outside, the echoes of ceremony continued. But in this chamber, time slowed, patience sharpened, and danger waited in every shadow.
