Chapter 6: The Race Against Time (Part 2)
The moon hung high above the Brody territory as the castle gates slowly opened.
Anna stood at the front of a small rescue party. Beside her was Marcus, dressed in black battle armor with twin silver swords strapped to his back. Four of the pack's strongest warriors waited behind them, each prepared for a journey from which they might never return.
Richard stood at the top of the stone steps despite his worsening condition.
Every breath was becoming more painful.
Yet he refused to remain in bed.
"I should be the one protecting you," he said quietly.
Anna stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him.
"And you will," she whispered. "By waiting for me to come back."
Richard rested his forehead against hers.
"For the first time in years... I'm afraid."
Anna looked into his tired blue eyes.
"You faced an army tonight without fear."
"I wasn't afraid of dying."
His voice became almost a whisper.
"I'm afraid of losing you."
Anna gently touched his cheek.
"You won't."
Unable to resist any longer, Richard kissed her.
It was gentle, filled with every unspoken promise between them.
When they finally pulled apart, Marcus cleared his throat respectfully.
"Luna... we should leave before dawn."
Anna nodded.
She climbed onto her horse and looked back one last time.
Richard remained standing at the castle entrance, watching until the riders disappeared into the darkness.
Hours later...
The rescue party arrived at the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
A thick mist curled around the ancient trees, hiding everything beyond the first few meters. Even the moonlight struggled to pierce the dense canopy.
One of the warriors swallowed nervously.
"I've heard no wolf returns the same after entering this place."
Marcus drew one of his swords.
"Stay alert. Legends exist for a reason."
As they crossed the invisible boundary, the forest seemed to come alive.
Branches shifted without wind.
Strange whispers echoed through the darkness.
Glowing blue eyes watched from between the trees before vanishing again.
Anna tightened her grip on Richard's pendant.
It gave her courage.
They walked for nearly an hour before the silence was broken by a heartbreaking cry.
"Help me!"
Anna froze.
"Did you hear that?"
One of the warriors nodded.
"It sounded like a child."
Marcus immediately stepped in front of them.
"Nobody moves."
"But someone is in danger," Anna protested.
Marcus shook his head.
"The Forbidden Forest creates illusions. If you follow the voices, you'll never find your way back."
Almost as if to prove him right, the cries changed.
This time...
They sounded exactly like Richard.
"Anna..."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"Help me..."
She instinctively took a step toward the voice.
Marcus caught her wrist.
"Don't."
She closed her eyes and forced herself to ignore the desperate calls.
Moments later, the voices disappeared completely.
Only silence remained.
As dawn approached, the forest suddenly opened into a beautiful clearing.
In its center stood a magnificent waterfall that shimmered like liquid silver beneath the fading moonlight.
"This must be Silver Falls," Anna whispered.
Near the water's edge grew a single glowing white flower.
The Moon Blossom.
Its petals sparkled like tiny stars.
Relief washed over Anna.
"We found it."
She hurried forward—
Then the ground beneath her feet trembled.
The waterfall erupted.
From the water emerged an enormous wolf with fur as white as fresh snow and eyes brighter than the full moon.
It towered over every member of the party.
The ancient guardian.
Its deep voice echoed inside their minds.
"Who seeks the Moon Blossom?"
Marcus stepped forward.
"We come to save our Alpha."
The guardian's gaze shifted to Anna.
"No."
The great wolf lowered its head until its glowing eyes met hers.
"She comes to fulfill a prophecy."
Anna's heart pounded.
"I don't understand."
The guardian circled her slowly.
"The Moon Mother has marked you."
It looked at the glowing crescent on her wrist.
"The flower may only be taken by one whose heart is pure."
Anna took a deep breath.
"Then please... let me save Richard."
The guardian remained silent for several moments.
Finally, it spoke again.
"Every gift demands a sacrifice."
Anna frowned.
"What sacrifice?"
The guardian's eyes glowed brighter.
"To save the Alpha... you must surrender something precious."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Take my strength."
The guardian shook its head.
A warrior offered his life.
Again...
"No."
The ancient wolf never looked away from Anna.
Only she could pay the price.
Anna's fingers slowly closed around Richard's pendant.
"If that's what it takes..."
She lifted her chin.
"...I accept."
The guardian smiled for the first time.
"The trial begins."
Without warning, the clearing vanished.
Anna found herself standing alone in complete darkness.
Richard was gone.
Marcus was gone.
Even the waterfall had disappeared.
A familiar voice echoed through the shadows.
"Anna..."
She turned sharply.
Her eyes widened.
Standing before her was the woman she had believed died years ago.
Her mother.
Tears filled Anna's eyes.
"Mom...?"
The woman smiled sadly and stretched out her hand.
"My daughter..."
Anna's heart pounded.
It couldn't be.
Her mother had died when she was a child.
So why...
Why did she feel so real?
Behind her, hidden among the trees of the real forest, a pair of crimson eyes watched the trial unfold.
Harold stepped from the shadows with a cold smile.
"So this is where you've been hiding, little Luna."
He slowly unsheathed his silver sword.
"This time..."
"...no one will save you."
