It is nearing Renewal Night, the rite where Arna, supreme god of the Northlands, renews the rule of his empire.
Tyr is seventeen and lives in a village, so he usually pays little attention to such things. This changes when he receives startling visions of the sacred past and is the sole witness of a joyful spirit of fire that dances amongst the revellers at a feast. The priests of Arna are left baffled by Tyr's experiences, and summon him to be examined.
Ilissos is heading home after touring the North, when he is seized by a cruel brotherhood of sorcerers. As Renewal Night unfolds, he is forced to watch as they ally with an ancient power to dominate the North and destroy the gods.
