The screech of metal on metal exploded through the night as a white van slammed into my car like a hammer from hell. I gripped the wheel hard, heart slamming against my ribs while the vehicle spun across the wet road near the city edge. Rain still poured down, blurring everything. I had barely cleared the last warehouse district, foot heavy on the gas, when they hit. No warning. Just impact. "Get off me," I yelled, fighting the skid. My car slammed into a guardrail with a crunch. I grabbed the door handle, ready to bolt. Two men jumped out of the van, faces hidden under hoods.
