Chapter 5: Behind Closed Doors

1527 Words
CLARA'S POV The ride back to the penthouse in the Maybach was heavier than the ride to the gala. The silence inside the car was absolute, thick, and suffocating. Julian stared out the tinted window, his jaw clenched so tightly I could see a muscle feathering in his cheek. He hadn't said a single word to me since we left the Grand Plaza Hotel. The lethal, terrifying energy he had unleashed upon Tristan Hayes still clung to him like a dark shadow. I sat pressed against the opposite door, staring down at my lap. My wrist still felt hot where Tristan had grabbed it, but it was nothing compared to the burning brand of Julian’s touch on my lower back. You are mine. The words echoed relentlessly in my skull. He hadn’t said it like a romantic declaration. He had said it like a universal fact. Like the law of gravity. When the Maybach pulled into the underground garage, Julian stepped out without waiting for the driver. I hurried to follow him, struggling slightly with the long, heavy slit of my emerald gown. The private elevator ride up to the penthouse was agonizing. The biometric scanner chimed, the doors slid open, and we stepped into the sprawling, glass-walled sanctuary. The city lights of Manhattan glittered below us, an ocean of diamonds, but inside, it felt incredibly isolating. I was exhausted. The adrenaline that had kept me standing on the red carpet was rapidly fading, leaving me completely drained. "I'm going to take this dress off," I whispered, breaking the heavy silence as I turned toward the east hallway. "Stay." The command wasn't loud, but it cracked through the air like a whip. I froze instantly, my bare shoulders tensing. Julian didn't look at me. He walked straight to the massive, black marble bar in the corner of the living room. With slow, deliberate movements, he shrugged off his custom tuxedo jacket, tossing it carelessly over the back of a pristine white leather sofa. He reached up and loosened his black bowtie, unfastening the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt. The sudden, raw display of his masculinity sent a dangerous flutter through my stomach. Without the formal jacket, his broad shoulders and the thick muscles of his back were undeniable. He poured a finger of amber liquid from a crystal decanter into a heavy glass. He took a slow sip, his back still turned to me. "Do you understand what happened tonight, Clara?" he asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed in the vast, empty room. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to turn around and face his broad back. "A man was rude. And you threatened to destroy his entire family's legacy over a touched wrist." Julian turned slowly. His obsidian eyes caught the dim, warm light of the bar, flashing with a predatory gleam. "I did not threaten him, Clara. I made him a promise. There is a fundamental difference. And he was not merely 'rude'. He attempted to lay claim to something that does not belong to him." "I am not a thing," I fired back, my voice trembling but laced with a sudden, desperate defiance. The fear that had paralyzed me all evening was rapidly morphing into frustration. "You bought my time to pay off my mother's debt. I signed a contract to be your companion. But I am still a human being, Julian. You can't just put a diamond collar on me and place me on a shelf like a shiny new trophy." Julian’s eyes darkened ominously. He set the crystal glass down on the marble counter. The soft clink sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room. Slowly, deliberately, he walked toward me. My instincts screamed at me to take a step back, but I forced my feet to stay planted on the plush carpet. I lifted my chin, staring right into his cold, terrifying eyes as he closed the distance between us. He didn't stop until his chest was a mere inch from mine. The overwhelming scent of bergamot and dark liquor wrapped around me, dizzying and potent. "You think you are on a shelf?" he murmured, leaning down until I could feel the warmth of his breath against my cheek. "What else am I?" I whispered, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "You bought my apartment building to force me out. You bought my clothes. You destroyed my phone. I have no job to do here except look pretty and stand silently by your side. I am a prisoner in an emerald dress." For a long, agonizing moment, Julian didn't speak. He just stared down at me, his gaze dropping to my lips before slowly trailing down the length of my neck, resting on the heavy, multi-tiered diamond necklace he had his styling team put on me. Then, he reached out. JULIAN'S POV She was magnificent. I was surrounded by people who bowed, scraped, and cowered the moment I entered a room. The most powerful billionaires in the world nervously agreed with everything I said just to avoid my wrath. Yet here, in the middle of my penthouse, a twenty-one-year-old girl with absolutely nothing to her name was glaring up at me, demanding to be seen. Her chest was heaving under the emerald silk, her eyes blazing with a defiant fire that made my blood run hot. She was terrified of me—I could hear the frantic, rapid beating of her heart—but she refused to back down. She hated the cage. She hated being a useless, beautiful possession. I looked at the heavy diamond necklace resting against her delicate collarbone. She called it a collar. Perhaps she wasn't entirely wrong. I had meticulously designed every aspect of this arrangement to strip away her independence, to make her completely and entirely reliant on me. But looking at the fierce intelligence burning in her eyes, I realized that keeping a mind like hers locked in a glass box would eventually destroy the very fire that drew me to her in the first place. I reached out. Clara’s breath hitched, a soft, involuntary sound escaping her lips as my hands bypassed her face and went straight to the back of her neck. My fingers brushed against her warm, soft skin, sending a violent jolt of electricity straight up my arm. I ignored the sudden, overwhelming urge to bury my face in her neck. Instead, my fingers found the complicated clasp of the diamond necklace. "You want a purpose, Clara?" I asked, my voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper as I unhooked the clasp. "Yes," she breathed, her eyes wide, entirely captivated by our proximity. I slowly pulled the heavy necklace away from her throat. The diamonds cascaded into the palm of my hand like frozen tears. I tossed the multi-million-dollar piece of jewelry carelessly onto the nearest glass coffee table. I returned my attention to her, placing my large hands firmly on her bare shoulders. She shivered under my touch. "Fine," I declared, my thumbs gently, possessively stroking her collarbone. "If you refuse to be a trophy, then you will earn your keep. Tomorrow morning at seven a.m., you will accompany me to Sterling Industries. You will not sit in the lobby. You will take the desk directly outside my office doors." Her eyes widened in absolute shock. "You... you are giving me the actual job? The Executive Assistant position?" "I am giving you a battlefield," I corrected smoothly, my gaze locking onto hers with unyielding intensity. "You will manage my schedules, you will sit in on my executive meetings, and you will read the confidential files of my rivals. You will be by my side not just in this penthouse, but in my war room. You want to use your brain? Then you will use it for my empire." I saw the immediate spark of excitement and relief flood her beautiful features. She wanted to work. She wanted to prove her worth. "Thank you," she whispered, a genuine, breathtaking softness entering her voice for the first time since we met. "Do not thank me yet, little bird," I murmured, my grip on her shoulders tightening just a fraction, a silent reminder of who held the power. "You will be subjected to the same ruthless standards as everyone else in my building. If you make a mistake, I will not spare your feelings. But never forget the reality of our arrangement." I leaned in, my lips brushing dangerously close to the shell of her ear. I felt her entire body tense, her breath completely stopping in her throat. "Whether you are holding a pen in my boardroom, or wearing my diamonds in this penthouse," I whispered, my voice dripping with dark, absolute possession, "you are still mine. From the moment you wake up, until the moment you close your eyes. Are we clear?" Clara swallowed hard, her pulse racing frantically against her neck where my thumb rested. "Yes, Julian," she breathed. "Good." I stepped back, immediately feeling the cold loss of her body heat. "Go to sleep, Clara. Your real work begins tomorrow."
