JULIAN'S POV
I stood perfectly still behind the heavy mahogany doors of my office, listening to the exchange outside.
When I had placed Clara at that desk, I knew exactly what I was doing. I was throwing her to the wolves. Sterling Industries was not a place for the weak. It was a vicious, cutthroat ecosystem where hesitation was punished and kindness was a fatal flaw. I wanted to see if the fiery, desperate girl who had glared at me in my penthouse would crumble under the crushing weight of my world, or if she would fight back.
I left the door cracked open just a fraction of an inch. I watched Marcus Thorne, a man with a fragile ego and a history of bullying his subordinates, approach her desk.
I fully expected Clara to buzz my intercom, pleading for my intervention. I was ready to step out and destroy Marcus for daring to disrespect what belonged to me. But before I could even move, Clara stood up.
Her spine was straight, her shoulders pulled back, and her delicate features hardened into a mask of pure, unyielding ice.
"You may bring in billions, Mr. Thorne, but I manage the schedule of the man who owns those billions."
Her words drifted through the c***k in the door, delivered in a dangerously quiet octave that I immediately recognized. It was my tone. She was weaponizing my authority, wrapping herself in my power as if she had been born to wield it.
I watched Marcus freeze, the color draining from his arrogant face as Clara flawlessly dismantled him. She didn't blink. She didn't take a single step back.
A violent, intoxicating surge of pride slammed into my chest, so intense it actually knocked the breath from my lungs. It wasn't just lust anymore. It wasn't just the possessive urge to lock her away in a glass cage. Looking at her standing there—a lethal, beautiful gatekeeper protecting my empire—I realized the terrifying truth.
I hadn't just bought a companion. I had found a queen.
When Marcus turned and fled to the elevators, Clara let out a shaky breath. I saw the slight tremble in her hands as she turned around. Our eyes met through the narrow gap in the door. I let her see the dark, burning approval in my gaze before I quietly pulled the door shut.
Ten minutes later, I pressed the intercom button on my desk.
"Clara," I said, my voice smooth and devoid of the chaotic obsession raging in my veins. "Send a message to Marcus Thorne. Tell him his quarterly bonus has just been reduced by forty percent due to insubordination. And if he ever raises his voice at you again, he will not just lose his bonus. He will lose his career."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.
"Right away, Mr. Sterling," she replied.
I leaned back in my leather chair, a dark, predatory smile touching my lips for the first time in years. The wolves thought they could intimidate my little bird. They had no idea they were dealing with a dragon.
CLARA'S POV
By the time the clock struck seven in the evening, I was running purely on adrenaline and caffeine.
My first day on the battlefield was a blur of aggressive phone calls, complex financial reports, and endless scheduling conflicts. But I hadn't broken. I had held the line. Every time a condescending executive tried to bypass me, I remembered the heat of Julian’s gaze through that cracked door, and I stood my ground.
The heavy mahogany doors finally opened. Julian stepped out, slipping his suit jacket back over his broad shoulders. He looked just as immaculate and terrifying as he had twelve hours ago.
"Shut down your terminal, Clara," he commanded softly. "We are going home."
Home.
The word sent a strange, complicated flutter through my stomach. The penthouse wasn't my home; it was my highly-paid prison. Yet, after surviving the absolute chaos of Sterling Industries, the thought of returning to that quiet, glass-walled sanctuary with Julian felt dangerously comforting.
The ride back in the Maybach was silent, but it wasn't the suffocating, heavy silence from the night before. The air between us felt charged, humming with a new, unspoken understanding.
When we walked into the penthouse, I immediately kicked off my black stilettos, letting out a soft groan of relief as my aching feet met the plush, charcoal carpet. I reached up and pulled the pins out of my tight bun, letting my hair cascade down my back. I was too exhausted to care about maintaining my armor.
"Sit," Julian ordered, his voice low.
I obeyed, sinking into the pristine white leather sofa in the center of the living room. I closed my eyes, letting the fatigue wash over me.
A moment later, I heard the soft clink of glass. I opened my eyes to see Julian standing over me. He had taken off his jacket and his tie, the top buttons of his crisp white shirt undone. In his large hand, he held a crystal tumbler with two fingers of amber liquid.
He didn't hand it to me. Instead, he sat down on the sofa right beside me. He was so close that his thigh brushed against my skirt, radiating a deep, intoxicating heat that instantly chased away the chill of the air conditioning.
"Drink," he murmured, pressing the cool crystal glass into my hand.
I took a small sip. The expensive bourbon burned a fiery, smooth path down my throat, warming my chest. I looked up at him, my heart picking up a frantic rhythm as I met his dark, unreadable eyes.
"You handled Marcus Thorne," Julian said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated straight through my core. It wasn't a question. It was an acknowledgment.
"He was trying to interrupt your meeting," I replied softly, my fingers gripping the glass. "I was just doing my job. The job you gave me."
Julian slowly reached out. My breath caught in my throat as his long, elegant fingers brushed aside a stray lock of hair that had fallen across my cheek. His touch was incredibly gentle, completely contrasting the ruthless tyrant he had been all day. His knuckles grazed my skin, sending a violent jolt of electricity down my spine.
"You did not just do your job, Clara," he whispered, leaning in until the heavy, intoxicating scent of bergamot and bourbon surrounded me completely. "You took my power, and you wore it. You made a man who brings in billions of dollars tremble by simply using my name."
I couldn't look away from his intense gaze. "Are you... are you angry that I overstepped?"
Julian’s eyes darkened, the pupils blowing wide, completely swallowing the obsidian irises.
"Angry?" he breathed, his thumb slowly tracing the line of my jaw, his touch sending a liquid heat pooling low in my stomach. "Little bird, I have never been more fascinated by anything in my entire life."
He leaned closer, his gaze dropping to my lips. The distance between us was virtually non-existent. I could feel the warmth of his breath against my mouth. My heart was pounding so hard I was certain he could hear it. Every instinct screamed at me to close the gap, to taste the danger that was Julian Sterling.
"You survived your first day in the cage," Julian murmured, his lips brushing a fraction of an inch from mine as he spoke, the friction creating a dizzying, agonizing tension. "But remember, Clara. Just because I let you hold the keys for a few hours, does not mean I will ever let you out."
He pulled back slowly, the sudden loss of his proximity leaving me gasping for air, completely breathless and entirely ruined. He stood up, taking his empty glass to the bar, leaving me sitting on the sofa with a racing heart and a terrifying realization.
I wasn't just surviving Julian Sterling anymore.
I was falling for the devil.
