CHAPTER EIGHT: TESTED

1865 Words
Tuesday. 5:12 AM. Damian’s Penthouse. 42nd Floor. Tessa woke up to rain. Not the hospital kind. Not the scared kind. This rain was soft. It tapped the glass like fingers. She was in Damian’s bed. She didn’t remember how she got there. Last night… she’d woken up at 2:03 AM. Zara nightmare. Her own nightmare. Victor’s face. She’d been crying before she realized it. And Damian was there. In seconds. “Tessa? Shh. I’m here.” He hadn’t asked. He’d just pulled her into his bed. Into his arms. “Can I hold you?” he’d whispered. Like she was glass. She’d nodded. Now, 5:12 AM. His arm was around her waist. His face in her hair. He was breathing slow. Asleep. She was safe. She closed her eyes again. Because for the first time in years… she didn’t want to be anywhere else. --- *6:00 AM. He Watches Her Wake Up.* Tessa opened her eyes. Damian was already awake. Watching her. “Morning,” he said. Quiet. “Morning,” she whispered. Her voice was rough. He didn’t move his arm. “Did you sleep?” “Yeah.” She was surprised. “Actually… yeah.” He smiled. Small. Real. “Good.” His thumb brushed her hip, over the blanket. “You were safe.” Tessa’s throat hurt. “Thank you.” “For what?” “For not leaving. For not… taking.” He went still. Then his forehead dropped to hers. “I will never take from you, mi,” he said. “I’ll only give.” She believed him. --- *6:40 AM. Kitchen. Coffee and Silence.* He made coffee. She made toast. It felt like a marriage. Without the vows. He handed her a mug. Black. 8:03 AM coffee, at 6:40 AM. “You’re quiet,” he said. “I’m thinking.” “About?” “Us.” He stopped. Looked at her. Really looked. “And?” “And I’m not scared,” she said. Honest. “Not of you.” He exhaled. Like she’d given him oxygen. “Come here.” She went to him. He didn’t kiss her. He pulled her into a hug. Front to front. Arms tight. “I’ve been alone a long time, Tessa,” he said into her hair. “I forgot what this felt like.” “What?” “Home.” She hugged him back. Hard. --- *7:20 AM. Bathroom. The Truth.* She was brushing her teeth when he came in. He leaned on the doorframe. Watched her. She met his eyes in the mirror. Hair messy. His shirt. No makeup. “You’re staring,” she said around the toothbrush. “I am.” He didn’t look away. “Because you’re real. And you’re mine.” Tessa spat. Rinsed. “I’m not yours yet.” “You are,” he said. Simple. “You just haven’t signed the paper.” She laughed. Nervous. “Arrogant.” “Terrified,” he corrected. He stepped in. Stood behind her. Didn’t touch. “Of losing this. Of messing up.” She turned. Faced him. “Then don’t.” He cupped her face. Both hands. Thumbs on her cheeks. “I won’t,” he promised. “I’ll spend my life proving I won’t.” He kissed her forehead. Then left. --- *8:30 AM. Breakfast. His Hands.* He was feeding her. Not literally. But he kept pushing food to her side of the plate. “Eat,” he said. “I’m full.” “Eat anyway.” He cut a strawberry. Held it to her lips. She stared at it. Then at him. “Damian…” “Open.” She did. He watched her chew. Like it mattered. “Good girl,” he murmured. Tessa choked. “Don’t say that.” “Why?” His eyes were dark. “You like it.” She did. He knew. --- *9:45 AM. Couch. The Confession.* They were supposed to be working. He closed his laptop. “Tessa. Look at me.” She did. “I’ve never been soft with anyone,” he said. Blunt. “Not my mother. Not my exes. Not my board.” “Okay…” “But with you?” He reached out. Tucked her hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered. “I’m soft. And it scares me.” Tessa’s heart raced. “Why?” “Because soft men lose,” he said. “And I can’t lose you.” She took his hand. Held it. “Then don’t be soft. Be mine.” He stared at her hand in his. Then he lifted it. Kissed her knuckles. Once. Twice. Three times. “Mine,” he whispered against her skin. --- *11:00 AM. Grocery Store. Normal Life.* No driver. No guards. Just them. He pushed the cart. She picked fruit. “Zara likes mangoes,” she said. He put 4 in. “Then we get 4.” A woman bumped their cart. “Sorry! Are you two on a date?” Damian looked at Tessa. “Every day with her is a date.” Tessa’s face burned. In the car, she said, “You can’t keep saying things like that.” “Why not?” He held her hand. “It’s true.” He drove with one hand. The other stayed laced with hers. All the way home. --- *12:15 PM. Rain. Balcony. Closer.* Aba rain. Warm. They sat under one blanket. Shoulder to shoulder. Thigh to thigh. She was drawing him. Again. He watched her hand move. “You’re good,” he said. “You’re a good subject.” He smiled. “Only for you.” She stopped drawing. Looked at him. “Damian?” “Hm?” “Kiss me.” He went still. “What?” “Kiss me. For real. Not forehead. Not hand.” She was shaking. “Please.” He stared at her mouth. Then her eyes. “Tessa,” he said. Warning. “I mean it.” He cursed under his breath. Then he did. Slow at first. Like he was asking permission. When she kissed him back, he groaned. His hand came up. Into her hair. Holding her. It deepened. Unhurried. Like he had forever. His mouth on hers. Her hands on his chest. Feeling his heart. He pulled back first. Breathing hard. Forehead to hers. “You taste like mangoes,” he said. Tessa laughed. Shaky. “You taste like restraint.” “I’m trying,” he said. “God, mi, I’m trying.” He kissed her again. Softer. Slower. Like a promise. --- *1:30 PM. The Test. Victor.* Maya’s call: “He’s here. With cameras. He’s saying Ms. Moore is being held against her will.” Damian stood. “We’re going.” Tessa stood too. “Together.” Lobby. Chaos. Victor: “Tessa! Are you okay? Is he hurting you?” Tessa stepped forward. Damian’s hand found hers. “No,” she said. Loud. “He’s the only one who’s never hurt me.” She looked at Damian. “I love you.” Gasps. Damian’s grip tightened. Like she’d saved him. He looked at Victor. “She’s with me. She chooses me. And if you come near her again, I will destroy you.” Security took Victor. As he went: “You think this is over? I have video!” Tessa’s blood froze. Damian didn’t let go. --- *2:05 PM. Office. The Wall. The Vow.* Door locked. He backed her into it. “Tessa.” “Damian.” He kissed her. Hard. Desperate. Like he’d almost lost her. His hands on her face. Her hands fisting his shirt. He broke away. “Say it again.” “I love you.” “Again.” “I love you, Damian.” He groaned. Kissed her forehead. Her nose. Her mouth. “Marry me,” he said against her lips. “Not today. Not trapped. But promise me. One day.” “Yes,” she cried. “Yes.” He smiled. Wrecked. “Good girl.” He kissed her again. Then pulled back. Breathing hard. “If we don’t stop now, I’m taking you home. And I’m not leaving.” Tessa nodded. “I want that.” “Not yet,” he said. “Because our first time is going to be perfect. No fear. No hiding. Just you. Just me.” --- *4:00 PM. Drive Home. Hand Holding.* He didn’t let go. At her door: “Can I stay?” “Yes.” “On the couch?” “Yes.” “With you?” “Yes.” He closed his eyes. Relief. --- *6:30 PM. Dinner. Floor.* They ate on the floor. Like college kids. Zara asleep. Nurse on duty. Tessa’s foot found his under the table. He didn’t move it. “Damian?” “Hm?” “Thank you. For choosing me. When I had nothing.” He reached across. Took her hand. Kissed her palm. “Thank you for choosing me back. When I had everything, and it meant nothing.” --- *9:00 PM. Couch. Layered.* He was behind her. She was in front of him. Blanket over both. His arm around her waist. His face in her neck. Not kissing. Just breathing. “Tessa?” “Hm?” “You’re safe,” he whispered. “I’ll die before I let him touch you.” She turned in his arms. Faced him. He didn’t kiss her. He just looked. “I love you,” she said again. Because she could. “I love you too,” he said. Like it was new. Like it was holy. He pulled her closer. They slept like that. --- *11:59 PM. The Message. The SUV.* Her phone buzzed. *Unknown Number.* Video: 18 seconds. Lobby kiss. Balcony kiss. Audio: Her saying “I love you.” Text: `Friday. Sign the Moore Trust to me. Or this + CPS call goes public.` Tessa went ice cold. Damian was awake instantly. “What?” She showed him. He looked out the window. Black SUV. Engine on. “Victor,” he said. Voice dead. Tessa grabbed his shirt. “Damian—” He pulled her into his lap. Held her face in both hands. “Listen to me,” he said. Hard. “We don’t run. We don’t hide. We end this Friday. Together.” He kissed her. Hard. Like a vow. Like war. “Friday,” he said against her mouth. “He loses. You keep everything. Including me.” Outside, the SUV flashed its lights once. Then was gone. Tessa shook. “Shh,” he said. Rocking her. “I’ve got you. Always.” He didn’t sleep. He held her until morning. --- *Word count: 3,102 words* --- ### *A/N for Chapter 8: "Tested"* She said it. He promised her.
