Victor was in handcuffs. Two NYPD officers stood on either side of him on the courthouse steps.
Tessa could not breathe.
Damian’s arms were around her. Front to back. Tight. Like if he let go, she would fall apart.
“It’s over,” he said into her hair. His voice was rough. “He can’t touch you. Not you. Not Zara. Not us. Not ever again.”
Maya pushed through the crowd. “Mr. Vance. Statement for the press?”
Damian did not look at her. He looked at Tessa. Only her. His thumb brushed her cheek. “No statement. Except this. She’s mine. And I’m hers. That’s all anyone gets.”
Cameras flashed. Loud. Blinding.
Tessa flinched. She hid her face in his chest. Shame. Relief. Terror all at once.
He took off his jacket and put it over her shoulders. He blocked every camera with his body. “Let’s go home,” he said. Soft. Only for her.
The SUV was waiting. Black. Tinted windows.
*1:15 PM. Upper East Side.*
No one spoke. Not Maya in the front seat. Not the driver.
Damian held her hand in his lap. His thumb rubbed over her knuckles. Slow. Constant. Like a heartbeat.
Tessa stared out the window. Manhattan passed by. Yellow cabs. People walking. Normal lives.
“Is it really over?” she whispered. Like if she said it loud, it would break.
“Yes,” he said. He did not look at the road. He looked at her. “Victor is charged. Blackmail. Extortion. Illegal surveillance. Fourteen years minimum. The video is deleted. His phone is with the police. He won’t see daylight for years.”
Tessa turned to him. “You did that. For me.”
“I would do it again,” he said. Simple. Like breathing. “Tomorrow. Next week. Every day for the rest of my life. Just stay with me.”
She squeezed his hand. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me,” he said. “Just stay.”
“I am,” she whispered. “I’m not going anywhere. Not without you.”
He closed his eyes for one second. Like a man who had been holding up the sky.
*2:00 PM. Central Park West Penthouse. 42nd Floor.*
Zara was asleep in the guest room. The private nurse was in the kitchen with the door closed.
Damian led Tessa to the balcony. Not the couch. Not the bed. The air.
The sun was out. Manhattan was bright below. Central Park was green in the distance.
He pulled her to him. No words. No asking.
She went. Front to front. Arms around his waist. Face in his shirt. His heart under her ear.
“I was so scared,” she said into the fabric. “All week. I thought I would lose you. Lose Zara. Lose everything.”
“I know,” he said. His hand was in her hair. Fingers through it. “I was too.”
“Of what?” she asked.
“Of losing you before I had you,” he said. Honest. Raw. “Of Victor winning. Of my father winning. Of the world taking you because I wasn’t fast enough.”
Tessa looked up. “You have me.”
He stared at her mouth. Then her eyes. “Say it again.”
“I’m yours, Damian.”
He closed his eyes. Like prayer. Like a man forgiven.
“Then let me hold you,” he said.
*2:30 PM. Living Room.*
He did not rush her to the bedroom.
He sat on the couch first. He pulled her into his lap. Sideways. Like she weighed nothing.
“Tessa,” he said. “Look at me.”
She did. Her hands were on his shoulders. Shaking.
He cupped her face. Both hands. Thumbs on her cheeks. Like he was memorizing every line.
“No fear. No hiding. No Victor. No cameras. Just us.”
“Okay,” she whispered. Her voice shook.
He kissed her.
Soft at first. Like he was asking permission all over again.
When she kissed him back, he exhaled. Like he had been holding his breath for days.
It deepened. Slow. Unhurried. His hands were in her hair. Her hands were fisting his shirt.
He broke away. Breathing hard. Forehead to hers.
“You’re safe,” he said. “Always. With me.”
“I know,” she said. And she did. For the first time.
He kissed her again. Her nose. Her cheeks. Her mouth. Like he had to touch all of her to believe she was real.
“I love you,” he murmured against her lips.
“I love you too.”
*3:00 PM. The Promise.*
He pulled back. Just enough to see her. To make sure.
“Tessa,” he said. Serious. No smile. No CEO.
“What?” Her heart raced.
“I meant what I said on the courthouse steps.”
“About what?”
“About you being mine.” He took her hand. He put it over his heart. His heart was fast. “I’m not letting you go. Not after this. Not after you chose me when you had every reason to run.”
Tessa’s eyes filled. “Good. Because I’m not going anywhere. Not without you. Not without Zara.”
He smiled. Small. Wrecked. Like she had saved him from drowning.
“Marry me,” he said. “Not today. Not rushed. Not because we’re scared. But soon. When you’re ready. When you know.”
Tessa nodded. Tears fell. “Soon.”
He lifted her hand. He kissed her knuckles. Once. Twice. Three times.
“Good girl,” he said. Soft. Reverent.
*4:30 PM. Zara Wakes Up.*
Zara ran out of the room. Hair messy. Blanket in her hand. “Mama! Mr. Damian!”
Tessa caught her. She lifted her. “Hey, baby.”
Zara looked between them. Head tilted. “Are you happy now? For real? Not pretending?”
Tessa looked at Damian.
He nodded. Once. Real.
“Yes, baby,” Tessa said. “We’re happy. We’re safe. We’re home.”
Zara smiled. Big. Gap toothed. “Good. Because I like Mr. Damian.”
Damian crouched. Eye level with her. “I like you too, Zara. A lot.”
He held his arms open.
Zara hugged him. Tight. Around the neck.
Tessa cried. She could not help it.
*6:00 PM. Dinner.*
No guards in the room. Just them. Just family.
He cooked. Pasta. She helped. Zara set the table. Three plates. Three cups.
It felt like a home. Not a penthouse. A home.
After, Zara fell asleep on the couch between them. A cartoon was playing low.
Damian’s arm was around Tessa. Tessa’s head was on his shoulder.
“This is it?” she whispered.
“This is it,” he said. “No more running. No more fear. No more hiding. Just us.”
He kissed the top of her head.
*8:00 PM. Balcony. Night.*
They sat on the floor. Backs to the wall. Legs stretched out.
Stars were out. Manhattan was loud below. Cars. Music. Life.
No blanket was needed tonight.
Damian’s arm was around her. She was leaning into him. Heavy. Trusting.
“Tessa,” he said.
“Hm?” She was half asleep.
“Thank you. For choosing me. When you had every reason not to.”
She turned. She looked at him. “Thank you for being worth choosing. For being safe. For being you.”
He smiled. Then he kissed her.
Not desperate. Not scared. Not claiming.
Just his. And she was his.
*9:30 PM. Bedroom.*
He did not ask her to stay.
He just opened his door. Light on. Bed made. Curtains open to the skyline.
She followed. Heart in her throat.
He sat on the edge of the bed. He pulled her between his legs. Back to his chest.
“I’m not going to touch you,” he said. Voice rough. “Unless you ask. Unless you’re sure. Unless you want.”
Tessa turned in his arms. She faced him. She straddled his lap.
“I’m asking,” she said. “I’m sure. I want you.”
He went still. “Tessa…”
“I want you,” she said again. “No fear. No hiding. No Victor in this room. Just us. Just now.”
He stared at her. Like she was holy. Like she was dangerous.
Then he kissed her.
Hard. Like he had been waiting his whole life.
His hands were on her face. Her hands were on his shirt. Buttons.
He broke away. Breathing hard. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” she said. “I’m sure. I’m yours.”
He nodded. Once.
He laid her down. Slow. Careful. Like she was glass.
“Mine,” he whispered against her mouth.
“Yours,” she said.
*11:59 PM. After.*
They did not talk.
He held her. She held him.
His arm was around her. Her head was on his chest. His heartbeat was under her ear.
“Tessa?”
“Hm?” She was drifting.
“You’re home,” he said. “For good.”
“I am,” she said. And she meant it. “I’m home.”
He kissed the top of her head. He held her tighter.
They slept.
*Saturday. 7:00 AM. Morning.*
Tessa woke up first.
Damian was watching her. Awake. Like he had been watching all night.
“Morning,” he said. Soft.
“Morning.” She was shy. Blanket to her chest.
He smiled. Small. “Don’t be.”
He pulled her close. He kissed her forehead. Her nose.
“Still mine?”
“Always,” she said. No hesitation.
“Good.” He held her. “Because I’m not giving you back.”
*9:00 AM. Breakfast.*
Zara sat between them at the island.
Damian made pancakes. He burned the first batch. Tessa cut fruit.
Zara said, “Are you guys married now? Like in the movies?”
They both choked on coffee.
Damian looked at Tessa. “Soon, baby.”
Zara nodded. Serious. “Good. I want you to be my dad.”
Silence.
Damian’s eyes went wet. He did not hide it. “I would like that, Zara. More than anything.”
Tessa reached for his hand under the table.
He held it. Hard.
*12:00 PM. Central Park Garden.*
He took her to the garden he promised her weeks ago.
Roses. Jasmine. A wooden bench. Skyline view. Fence around it.
“This is yours,” he said. “All of it. For you to draw. For Zara to play. For us.”
Tessa cried. “Damian…”
“Shh.” He wiped her tears with his thumb. “You asked for peace. Here it is. No more hospitals. No more fear.”
She hugged him. Hard. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he said. “More than this garden. More than the city.”
*6:00 PM. The Ring.*
He did not propose on one knee. Not yet. Not a show.
He just gave her a small box after dinner.
Inside was a simple band. Gold. No diamond. No flash.
“For now,” he said. “Until I can give you the world. Until you’re ready.”
Tessa put it on her left hand. It fit.
“I don’t need the world,” she said. “I need you.”
He kissed her. “Then you have me. All of me.”
*10:00 PM. Bed.*
No fear. No hiding. No knocking.
Just Damian. Just Tessa. Just theirs.
He whispered her name like a vow.
She said his like a prayer.
