Maddy waited until Janey and Sean had left, smiling and waving them out of the cottage where she and Julia had decided to stay while Tessa walked them out. “I’m going to bed,” Julia said, and Maddy put the coffee mugs in the kitchen sink and turned toward her. She wiped her hands down the front of her shirt and over her hips. “Okay,” she said. Her nerves fired at her like cannons, and Maddy wasn’t sure why. She stepped forward awkwardly and grabbed onto Julia. “It’s going to be okay.” Julia held her back, her grip almost painful as their shoulder bones pressed into one another. “I just can’t believe this.” Maddy nodded, because her life in the past month had morphed into one she hardly recognized too.
