Chapter 31: how could you

849 Words
Nadia’s POV The tears pooling beneath my eyes rushes down my cheek immediately as I stare at Clara’s broken form. Why’s this happening? What did she do to deserve such brutality? “Clara,” I murmur, trying to rush over to her, but Lorenzo stops me, grabbing me by my waist and pulling me against his body. His hand snaps upward and he wraps one large palm at the back of my neck, forcing me to keep my eyes solely on Clara. I watch as he signals his men and they resume beating her, raining heavy blows on her fragile body. “Why?! Why are you doing this?!” I scream, trying to break free of his iron grip, but I couldn’t. His arms remains firm and unmovable on my waist. “Shhhhhh,” he cooed, his breath warm as he leans in closer, kissing the shell of my ear. “I see you really like her,” he whispers, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. “Pity she had to betray me.” I freeze instantly, my blood running cold. She betrayed him? How? “Wh…” I gasp as his grip on the back of neck tightens a fraction. “What do you mean she betrayed you?” His face moves from my ear and I can feel his warm breath on my neck, I try to pull away from him, my whimpers coming out as muffled sounds. “She let them in,” he whispers against my neck, rubbing his lips gently on my shoulder and trailing it up to my ear. “She opened the doors for the enemies to infiltrate my home.” “No,” I gasp, swallowing hard on the lump in my throat. “It’s not true. There’s must be some kind of mistake. She has served you for three years, why would she betray you?” A low, dangerous laugh erupts from his throat. “She told you that lie? I can see how close you both have been. And that’s why i brought you here, so you can watch while I kill her.” She lied? Why would she lie? Is she really a spy? “No… Lorenzo please! You can’t just… just kill her!” I cry out, trying to wrench myself free of his grip, but it only tightens further. “I can. And I will,” he whispers in my ear, his voice a low rumble that vibrates low in my belly. “And you will watch every single agonizing moment of it.” “Non fermatevi.” [Don’t stop] Lorenzo orders his men, and they proceed to beating her up. I stand frozen in his grip, watching with wide eyes as they beat her until her breathing becomes weak and shallow. “Stop! Please… stop! You are killing her!” my screams heighten as I pull against Lorenzo’s powerful arm on my waist. My tears falling freely as I couldn’t control it anymore. “Lorenzo… please… please, for my sake, just… just let her go,” I beg amidst sobs, hoping he would have mercy. But his next words shatter every hope I have. “For your sake?” he chuckles, a dark, gritty sound dripping with absolute venom. “Who the f**k do you think you are, piccola?” The next thing that follows is the rustling of clothes, Lorenzo pulls out the gun resting on his waist, layering it at Clara. “No… no… Lorenzo please!” I cry out. But before I can even protest further, he pulls the trigger, the deafening sound of the gunshot ringing so loudly in my ear. Once. Twice. Three times, he shoots her on her chest, killing her on the spot, without even a second thought. My heart stops totally as I watch Clara’s body go limp. Blood soaking her maids’ uniform and dripping to the floor from the gaping hole. She was the only friend I had. How could he kill her like this? “How could you… you killed her! You monster!” I cry out, digging my fingers into his arm. Lorenzo hands his gun over to one of his men, flips me around, making me face him, his face is totally expressionless, as if he hadn’t just killed someone. “Call me whatever the f**k you want to, Nadia,” he growls, his face just inches away from mine. “She even lied to you, and your dumb ass believed her? You are a fool.” He shoves me away from him roughly, I lose balance and hit the ground with a loud thud, my elbow bruising from the impact. My eyes immediately fixes on Clara’s corpse. She lied to me. But she was nice, I could see how much she cared for me. Now, she’s gone. Just like that. “Send her body to the Lucchese household,” Lorenzo growls, his deep baritone vibrating against the damp walls of the dungeon. “Tell them i’ll be coming for every single one of them soon, and they better get ready.”
