Amelia's POV
She looked over the moon and it scared the s**t out of me. Could one really be this excited for nothing?
"While we are on about school,” she started with a smirk. “I saw you in the quad earlier. You were totally zoning out on Blaze Thorne, weren't you?" She shot with an exaggerated grin.
I choked on my spit as my face went hot. "What? No, I—I mean, who?" I stuttered.
Sophie rolled her eyes with a knowing smirk. "Girl, don't play dumb with me,” she replied with a laugh.
“Who's Blake? I don't know what you're talking about,” I replied as the room suddenly felt hotter.
She pulled up a brow at me but smirked anyway.
“The guy with the leather jacket, looking like he stepped out of a bad-boy movie? Everyone stares at him. He's like Ridgewood's resident mystery,” she explained with her head up and hands in the air.
I pretended to be busy unpacking my notes, but she wasn't letting it go. “You totally saw him, didn't you?” She called out again.
"Okay, fine. Maybe I noticed him. What's his deal?" I asked, turning to her.
She leaned in close like she was sharing some government secret. “His name is Blaze Thorne, a senior and track star. Guys love him cause he's fast as hell, like way too quick,” she started.
Explains those goons.
“He wins literally every race without breaking a sweat,” she added dramatically.
I rolled my eyes. I'm sure she's exaggerating, he can't be that good.
“And the girls? Oh man, his rep is legendary,”she continued with a dreamy look. “He hooks up with different ladies, makes 'em scream, then ghosts them afterwards,” she explained.
He's a d**k, I knew it.
“But he's super reserved, lives off-campus towards the woods and barely talks to anyone unless it's sarcasm,” she continued.
I shook my head, he's literally a walking danger.
“Rumor is he got kicked out of his family back home or something,” she whispered.
“How do you know all these?” I asked skeptically.
“Got my ears around,” she replied with a proud grin. “Chloe Hayes from the cheer squad was bragging about him last week, saying he's super hot in bed, but a total jerk after."
I felt a faint burn again around my neck, but shook it off as I didn't want the only person that had really spoken to me since I got her to think I'm weird too.
But my tummy twisted with something I couldn't put a name around.
Like the feeling I got when I'm craving my favorite snack or I see someone with it.
Shouldn't be having that feeling now.
"Sounds like trouble,” I finally muttered.
"Exactly!” She screamed dramatically. “You stay away from him if you're smart. He's hot, yes, but not worth the headache,” she added, throwing her hand dismissively in the air.
Then she hopped up on her feet, grabbing her phone on the way.
“Anyway, wanna grab lunch? I can show you the good spots,” she offered.
I nodded even though I could barely hear anything besides Blake's name.
We headed out together, locked our door and Sophie led the way to what she called the best lunch spot.
We spent the afternoon chatting over the cafeteria sandwiches and she told me a lot about her high school ex.
Some parts were too much for me if I may say.
I too shared vague stuff about my aunt and uncle's overprotectiveness and to be honest? It felt good, like normal.
It was a good feeling to share stuff with someone who had the energy you wished.
After lunch, we headed back to school for our afternoon lectures.
“I've got about two before the close of the day,” Sophie announced as we stepped through the doors together.
I nearly melted as it felt so good not to walk in here alone.
For the first time since I got here, I felt confident while walking through these hallways.
“I've got one, I'll wait for you till you're done,” I replied with a smile.
“Really?” She asked, placing a hand on my shoulder and grinning ear to ear.
I nodded and her grin widened, didn't think that was possible.
“Perfect then, see you by 4,” she called back as she skipped off.
I watched her go down the hallway and I couldn't help but smile as she skipped on.
She's really one of a kind.
I grabbed my stuff and headed towards my class slowly.
I got there in time and zoned out throughout the lecture.
And as the class wrapped up for the day, my mind circled back to Blaze.
I felt that pull again and looked out the window to find him sitting by the field in his track gear.
I watched him carefully, drawn to the way he stood apart from everyone.
What really was his story? Why did he make me feel so alive?
I didn't know how long I’d been staring at him till I heard my name.
“Amelia Hart!”
I turned immediately to the front of the class as the rest of the class burst out laughing.
“I believe my face is here, not out the window,” the lecturer continued and the class laughed again.
“I'm sorry, I was—”
“Admiring the athletes, right?” He cut me off and the class laughed louder.
I felt my cheeks burn as I folded into the chair.
The lecturer looked at me one more time before shaking his head and going back to whatever he was saying.
I stared down till the end of the class and rushed out the moment he left, avoiding any eye or talk.
I found a lonely spot close to where Sophie was having her class and sat there, waiting for her.
By evening, Sophie and the rest of the class pooled out and she spotted me immediately.
She waved excitedly and as she approached me, I got up on my feet.
She threw her hands around me in a hug, like we didn't just see ourselves two hours ago.
I chuckled and hugged her back.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting,” she said as she pulled back and I waved it off. “Let’s head back and rest,” she added and we strolled back towards our dorm.
But as we passed by a spot where the field could be seen, the scar throbbed again and I got a crazy idea.
"Hey, Sophie? I think you have to go on without me, I've got to meet up with one of my lecturers,” I lied.
She frowned and stopped walking, turning to me. “Okay, I'll wait though. Can't go without you,” she said.
I shook my head immediately. “No, you don't have to. I'll take long, and besides, someone needs to get us dinner,” I replied with a smirk.
She gave me a pointed look and smiled. “Only because you don't know your way around yet. Be back before 7,” she muttered and walked away.
I smiled after her, but the moment she got out of view, I turned my eyes to the field.
It's time to get some answers.
