The Challenge

The anonymous message remained on Ananya's phone screen. > **Secrets don't stay hidden forever.** She stared at it for several seconds. Then she locked her phone. "Probably just some stupid prank." But deep down, she knew it wasn't. Someone had been watching her. The thought made her uncomfortable. Still, she refused to let it ruin her victory. Team Seven had reached the **IN Tech University Finals**. And for the first time since joining the tournament, Ananya allowed herself to feel proud. --- The next morning, the university was full of excitement. The final match was only a few days away. Students wore Team Seven badges. Posters had appeared across the campus. ### **IN TECH UNIVERSITY ESPORTS FINALS** ### **TEAM SEVEN VS TEAM NINE** Everyone was already discussing the final. Ananya, however, was sitting in the cafeteria with Riya and Meera, trying to finish her breakfast. "You're not eating properly," Meera said. "I'm eating." "You've been staring at the same sandwich for five minutes." Ananya looked down. She was, in fact, still holding the same sandwich. "I was thinking." Riya leaned closer. "About the finals?" "Yes." "Or about a certain someone?" Ananya immediately looked up. "Who?" Riya smiled innocently. "Whoever you thought of first." Ananya threw a napkin at her. "Stop it." Meera laughed. "You two are impossible." Before Riya could say anything else, Ananya's phone vibrated. A notification appeared. Her expression changed. --- ### **LEGENDS OF ASTRA** ### **NEW DUEL CHALLENGE** **Opponent: Unknown Player** **Match Type: One-on-One Duel** **Time Limit: 24 Hours** **Special Condition: Winner advances to the Elite Duel Championship.** --- Ananya read the notification twice. "What's wrong?" Meera asked. "Someone challenged me." Riya leaned over the table. "A duel?" Ananya nodded. "Who?" "Unknown." Riya frowned. "That sounds suspicious." Ananya opened the challenge details. The opponent's username was hidden. Only one message was visible. > **If ShadowFlame is truly the player everyone believes she is... accept the challenge.** Ananya's eyes narrowed. She knew exactly what this was. A provocation. She had faced them before. Players who wanted to test themselves against the strongest. Players who wanted attention. Players who wanted to defeat her. Riya looked at her. "Don't accept it." Ananya glanced at her. "Why?" "Because the message is clearly trying to provoke you." "Exactly." Ananya smiled. "Which means they already think they can beat me." Meera sighed. "That's not a reason to accept." Ananya tapped the screen. ### **ACCEPT** The challenge disappeared. Riya stared at her. "You accepted it?" Ananya placed her phone on the table. "Of course." "Ananya!" "It's just one duel." "Your final is coming up!" "I can handle both." She smiled confidently. But she didn't know yet... That accepting the challenge would change everything. --- That evening... Ananya returned to the hostel earlier than usual. The duel match was scheduled for later that night. She had several hours to prepare. She opened her laptop and sat at her desk. "Let's see who thinks they can challenge me." She pressed the power button. Nothing happened. Ananya frowned. She pressed it again. Still nothing. "No..." She tried the charger. The laptop remained completely silent. Ananya's expression slowly changed. "Please don't do this now." She tried turning it on again. Nothing. She picked up the laptop and examined it carefully. There was a faint sticky mark near the keyboard. Her eyes widened. "Water?" --- At that exact moment, Riya walked into the room holding a bowl of snacks. "Ananya..." Ananya slowly turned toward her. "Riya." Riya stopped. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Ananya held up the laptop. "Who was sitting here earlier?" Riya's eyes moved toward the bed. Then toward the laptop. Then back to Ananya. "Me." "What happened?" Riya immediately looked guilty. "I was watching a series." "On my laptop?" "Just for a few minutes." Ananya closed her eyes. "Riya..." "I didn't know the water bottle was open!" "What water bottle?" Riya pointed toward the table. Ananya followed her gaze. An empty water bottle lay beside the laptop. Her face went pale. "You spilled water on my laptop?" "Accidentally!" "When?" "Maybe... half an hour ago?" Ananya stared at her. "Riya!" "I thought it was fine!" Ananya immediately turned the laptop upside down. Her heart began beating faster. The duel was only a few hours away. Her entire gaming setup was inside that laptop. Her account. Her settings. Her controls. Everything. She pressed the power button again. Nothing. --- "Don't panic," Riya said. "I'm not panicking." "You look like you're about to murder me." "I'm not panicking!" Ananya grabbed her phone and called a repair shop. After explaining the problem, the technician gave her the answer she feared. "If water reached the motherboard, it may not turn on." "Can you repair it today?" There was a pause. "Madam, we need to inspect it first." "How long?" "At least one or two days." Ananya slowly lowered the phone. One or two days. The duel was tonight. She looked at her dead laptop. "No..." --- Riya stepped closer. "I'm really sorry." Ananya took a deep breath. "It was an accident." "I'll pay for the repair." "We'll deal with that later." "But the match..." Ananya looked at the clock. The challenge timer was already counting down. She had to find another computer. She opened her phone and searched for gaming cafés nearby. One result appeared. ### **PIXEL ZONE INTERNET CAFÉ** It was only a short distance from the university. Ananya immediately grabbed her bag. "I'm going out." "Where?" "Internet café." "Now?" "I have a duel to play." Riya stared at her. "You're seriously going to play from an internet café?" Ananya gave her a determined look. "Someone challenged ShadowFlame." She picked up her headphones. "I can't let a broken laptop make me lose." --- A few minutes later... Ananya hurried through the evening streets toward the gaming café. She had no idea that the place she was heading to would bring her face-to-face with someone who had unknowingly been searching for her for years. And somewhere inside that same café... Arjun Varma was already there. The neon sign of PIXEL ZONE INTERNET CAFÉ glowed brightly against the evening darkness. Ananya pushed open the glass door and stepped inside. The familiar sound of keyboards, gaming mice, and excited voices filled the room. Rows of high-end computers stood beneath bright LED lights. For most people, it was simply an internet café. For Ananya... It was her only chance to participate in the duel. She walked to the counter. "Excuse me. I need a gaming computer." The attendant pointed toward the far end of the café. "Those computers are available. You can choose any one." "Thank you." Ananya quickly walked toward the gaming section. She didn't notice the man sitting in the private room near the back. Inside the private room... Arjun Varma sat across from his uncle. A chessboard rested between them. His uncle moved a piece across the board. "Check." Arjun looked at the board. He smiled. "That was a mistake." His uncle raised an eyebrow. "Was it?" Arjun moved his knight. "Yes." His uncle stared at the board. Then he laughed. "You've become too confident." "You taught me to think three moves ahead." "And now you use it against me?" "That's what you taught me to do." His uncle shook his head with a smile. "One day, you'll learn that not every problem can be solved by thinking three moves ahead." Arjun leaned back in his chair. "Then I'll think four moves ahead." His uncle laughed. "You haven't changed." A few minutes later, Arjun heard the sound of a chair being pulled out. He glanced toward the open door. A girl had just sat at one of the gaming computers. She was wearing a simple hoodie. Her hair was tied back. Her face was partially hidden by the computer screen. Arjun barely paid attention. He returned his gaze to the chessboard. His uncle made another move. "Your turn." Arjun looked at the board. But before he could respond... A sound caught his attention. The rapid clicking of a gaming mouse. Click. Click. Click. The girl's fingers moved across the keyboard with incredible speed. Arjun's eyes shifted toward her screen. He couldn't see the entire display. Only the movement of her hands. The way she positioned her fingers. The way she paused for a fraction of a second before making each move. Something about it felt familiar. Very familiar. His uncle noticed his distraction. "Arjun?" "Hmm?" "Your turn." Arjun looked back at the chessboard. But his eyes kept drifting toward the girl. She was playing intensely now. Her shoulders were relaxed. Her hands were steady. There was no hesitation in her movements. A player who was nervous would make quick, careless decisions. A beginner would constantly look at the map. But this girl... She already knew exactly what she wanted to do. Arjun's eyes narrowed. "That movement..." He had seen it before. Not once. Not twice. Hundreds of times. On a screen. In matches. In the hands of a player whose identity had remained a mystery for years. ShadowFlame. The girl suddenly leaned forward. Her left hand moved across the keyboard. Her right hand clicked the mouse three times. The opponent on the screen was eliminated. ENEMY DEFEATED Arjun's attention was completely captured now. He stood up slowly. His uncle looked at him. "Where are you going?" "Just a minute." Arjun walked toward the gaming area. The girl was still focused on the match. He didn't look at her face. He looked at the screen. A gaming ID appeared in the corner. SHADOWFLAME Arjun stopped. For a second... Everything around him seemed to disappear. The noise of the café. The sound of keyboards. The voices of the players. All of it faded. His eyes remained fixed on the screen. ShadowFlame. The player he had spent years playing alongside. The player whose strategies he knew better than anyone. The player who had become his closest online companion. The player he had been trying to understand... Was sitting only a few feet away. The girl suddenly turned slightly. Arjun quickly stepped back. She didn't notice him. Her attention remained on the game. Arjun looked at her carefully. The hoodie. The tied hair. The familiar concentration on her face. Then he recognized her. His breath caught. Ananya. He stared at her in disbelief. "No..." But there was no mistake. The gaming ID. The movements. The timing. The way she played. Everything matched. The girl he had been playing with online every night... The mysterious player he had been searching for... Was Ananya Rao. His teammate. His friend. The girl he had taken to the café only yesterday. Arjun slowly stepped backward. His mind was racing. "Ananya is ShadowFlame?" "Arjun?" His uncle's voice came from behind him. Arjun turned. "Yes?" "Are you coming?" He glanced once more toward Ananya. She was still playing. Completely unaware. "Yes." He returned to the private room. But he no longer had any interest in the chessboard. His uncle studied him. "What happened?" "Nothing." "You're distracted." Arjun looked at the chessboard. For the first time in years... He had no idea what his next move should be. His uncle stood up. "Come on." "Where?" "Lunch." "I'm not hungry." His uncle gave him a look. "You're coming." Arjun glanced toward the gaming area again. Ananya was still playing. He couldn't stop thinking about it. He had finally found ShadowFlame. And she had no idea that StormKnight was sitting only a few meters away. "Fine," he said. "I'll come." As Arjun walked out of the private room with his uncle... He looked back one last time. Ananya's fingers moved across the keyboard. Fast. Precise. Perfect. The same movements he had watched countless times online. A faint smile appeared on his face. "So it was you all along..." At the restaurant... His uncle talked about business. Arjun barely heard him. He kept replaying the moment in his mind. The gaming ID. The movements. The face. There was no doubt. Ananya was ShadowFlame. But one question remained. Should he tell her that he knew? He immediately rejected the idea. No. Not yet. He wanted to understand her first. He wanted to know why she had hidden her identity. And more importantly... He wanted to see how long she would continue talking to StormKnight without realizing who he really was. A mischievous smile appeared on his face. His uncle noticed. "What are you smiling about?" "Nothing." "You're definitely hiding something." Arjun looked down at his phone. "Maybe." After lunch, Arjun returned to his startup office. The office was mostly empty. He walked straight to his desk and opened his computer. His mind was still filled with doubt. He knew what he had seen. But he wanted proof. Using the gaming ID he had memorized, Arjun accessed the tournament database. He opened the private tournament records and searched for ShadowFlame's player ID. The screen displayed only limited information. PLAYER ID: SHADOWFLAME IDENTITY: PRIVATE REAL NAME: ACCESS RESTRICTED Arjun leaned back in his chair. "So even the tournament database won't reveal it..." He stared at the screen. But then he remembered the serial number connected to the gaming account—the number he had memorized at the internet café. He entered it into the internal records of his own gaming startup. A few seconds later, a private player profile appeared. Not a name. Not an address. Not any personal information. Only a registered device signature. Arjun compared it with the laptop Ananya had used at the café. The signature matched. His eyes widened. He leaned back slowly. There was no longer any doubt. The person he had just watched playing as ShadowFlame... Was Ananya. He smiled in disbelief. "So... it was you all along."
