Voice Echoing in the Void

A final crackle from the fireplace was enough to make Selin’s heavy eyelids part. Her body had relaxed slightly with the warmth of the fire’s last embers, but the unease inside her was growing like an avalanche. When she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the flickering shadows on the ceiling. The fire was dying; only a few pieces of red ember were giving their last breaths among the gray ashes. Selin reached out from under the blanket and placed her hand on the spot where Murat always sat. Emptiness… Only an ice-cold emptiness. “Murat?” Selin whispered. Her voice hung suspended in the room’s cooling air. No answer came. Normally, even if Murat didn’t respond, Selin would feel his presence, that slight shiver on the back of her neck or that static electricity scent in the air.
