Chapter 1

During the lunch break, I stayed with my dear daughter as we played in the stairwell. She shook my hand, wanting to play a game of tag with me. Looking up at me with eager, hopeful eyes, she seemed utterly adorable. My heart melted completely, and I nodded in agreement. She ran happily along the hallway, but suddenly stumbled and fell at the top of the stairs. Her bright giggles turned into loud, tearful cries. I quickly helped her to her feet, fixed her clothes, and comforted her right away. "Don't cry, sweetie. You are so brave. Daddy will fly home from abroad tomorrow, so be good, okay?" As soon as she heard her father mentioned, a smile immediately spread across her rosy cheeks. I gently patted her head and asked the caregiver standing nearby to take her home. I watched as my little one waved her tiny hand at me while being carried to the car. After they drove off, I turned and walked back toward my office. My phone began to buzz repeatedly. When I opened it, I froze in shock. The whole scene where I had just been comforting my daughter had been secretly recorded as a video. Not only that, it had been maliciously edited and even played in reverse. Coupled with a tricky camera angle, the footage made it look as though I had pushed her instead of pulling her up, grabbed her arm roughly instead of adjusting her sleeve, and hit her back rather than patting it gently. The sound of my daughter wailing had been deliberately amplified. A completely fabricated video that appeared flawless was posted anonymously in the company's group chat. In an instant, the chat was flooded with insults and accusations directed at me. People from my own department were relatively restrained, but those from other departments spoke without any filter. A: Watching that little girl cry makes my heart ache. May that cruel woman get what she deserves. Anyone who would hurt a child has a cold, vicious heart... karma will catch up with her one day! B: Isn't that Yvaine Reed from the sales department? She always seems so gentle and kind, but she is actually this terrible behind closed doors. C: I wonder whose child that poor little one is. If I were her mother, I would never let this go... I frowned deeply. It was obvious someone had done this deliberately to frame me. Yet I knew I had never held grudges or made enemies with anyone, so I truly could not guess who was behind it. Lost in my thoughts, I walked toward my department's office. Before I even stepped inside, I heard voices raised in heated discussion. Above the noise, I could clearly hear my own name being mentioned over and over again. I turned the doorknob and opened the door. There stood Linnea Oakmere, speaking loudly in front of a group of colleagues. "As far as I can tell, Yvaine is nothing but a hypocrite... she pretends to be so nice to everyone. Only someone like her could ever do something as terrible as hurting a child," she continued to ramble without pause, her back still turned to me. She did not notice the awkward, uneasy expressions on the faces of everyone else in the room, and kept speaking with increasing passion. "Everyone thinks she has been kind enough to teach me the ropes, but she only wanted me to take over her tasks sooner and lighten her own workload. And remember the Outstanding Employee Award? It is meant to encourage new hires, but Yvaine won it last time. She clearly just used her position as team lead to claim the prize and bonus for herself." Listening to her complaints and false accusations, I already knew what kind of person she truly was, yet I still felt a cold pang of disappointment in my chest. Linnea had only worked here for about a year. She started as an intern, and I had personally guided her from day one. I saw great potential in her and shared every bit of my knowledge and experience without holding anything back. But it turned out that once the student learned enough, she began to resent her teacher. Before long, she felt she had outgrown her role and decided I was standing in the way of her promotion. From that point on, she opposed me at every turn during work, and even teamed up with a few other colleagues to create problems for me. All of it was done just to force me out, so she could take my position for herself.
