When Worlds Collide

Chapter 8

I look to see why my colleges rolled their eyes and wished I never, I too rolled my eyes when I seen why. Our annoying, stuck up deputy Bellend was coming our way, 'give me strength to put up with this bastard' I think to myself, and by the expression on the rest of the group faces they were thinking the same as me.

He walks over to me holding a huge file, I've not seen a file like that for a long time, this case has been going for 5 years so it's understandable. 

As he arrives in front of me I grit my teeth together showing a tight lipped smile, then he opens his stupid gob to ask a stupid question, looking at me he asks "officer Tobias Connor?" like duh...you're looking at me, being deputy he should know his officers, but still I keep me cool and politely answer "yes sir, how can I help you?" the deputy is always snobby and has an attitude so very rudely he throws the file on my table behind me, I walk around and sit at my desk, my colleges leaving me alone with deputy Richard Bell. I look up at the deputy looking for the answer to the my question, as if he read my ask he starts talking "case file on Roxanna, you'll be undercover for most of it and come to update us". Confused I ask "how come sir?" still trying to remain professional, "you use to know her, so we're going to use that to help get her back behind bars. She is to not know you're working on her case against her, you can tell her you work for the police if it comes up in conversation, but don't let her click on to why you're really getting in with her again" is his reply, ok I'm puzzled now, "I use to know her?" I ask beyond confused. "Don't screw up, this is our biggest chance, don't blow it" he answers as he walks away I open the file, suddenly I see why I'm on the case and the last to know as I see a picture of Roxanna, then as I realise, without me knowing a disappointed look forms on my own face.

Realisation suddenly strikes "oh man, that explains why they want me on the case, Roxanna, why?" I say to myself as a flashback hits.

FLASHBACK

So much homework to do, I'm only 14 and yet they gave me sooo much, but I'll still work hard, I will get my dream job as a policeman. Suddenly as I'm in the middle of doing homework, shouts from next door, Roxanna's house come distracting me from my homework. I hear the person shouting, I know him....it's Roxanna's dad David Miles, I listen more. "No! Don't do it! It should have been you, not him, now put that away!" I hear him shout, suddenly a blood curdling scream is heard from David "no!" 

my stomach is churning, I think I've just heard a horrible crime happen, so I run to my phone and quickly dial 911. Panic and worry over come me as the operator picks up the phone "hello? Police? I think there's been a murder next door" I say worry clearly heard in my voice.

FLASHBACK ENDS.

I sit at my desk, looking through the file, I don't know why but I feel guilty about taking on this case, I'm just doing my job, I wish I knew more before I agreed. As the guilt consumes me, a flashback of the day she first got arrested floods my mind.

FLASHBACK

Me and Roxanna are at the park, she took Elliot's death really bad, so for months since his death I've made it a daily thing for us to go the park and shoot some hoops, she maybe smaller but she's much more athletic and really good at playing sports, even though I lose terrible each time against her, it brings her some joy even if it's only for a short time. She's my best friend, and to see her so empty is hard so I try to bring some kind of light for her. As she is beating me....as usual she says to me "thanks for this man, it's just what I needed after El dying "no probs Ann, I can't even imagine what you're going through" I genuinely couldn't. I mean losing your brother is 1 thing, but your twin? I can't even imagine the struggle Roxanna is going through, "so freakin much, doesn't mean you get to go easy on me" she replies, the thing with Roxanna she always liked a challenge, no matter what she was dealing with, she never wanted her opponent to go easy on her. Slightly offended she'd even think I would, I say "I'm not" like I said she is just naturally good at sports, Roxanna being the smart mouthed girl she is says "so you're naturally this bad then? But seriously thanks". She then scores yet another basket, suddenly out of no where police arrive and surround us approaching Roxanna, I get this awful feeling but Roxanna just keeps being her. She holds the ball under her arm as the deputy police officer approaches her, he stood tall above her, as if trying to intimidate her which obviously doesn't work, not paying attention to her not being fazed the deputy asks "Roxanna Miles?" she simply says "who's askin?" to which she received the reply "Deputy Bell, Can I ask you questions?" then Roxanna being her usual self, makes the smart ass response that I guess I was expecting "just did Bell, sorry" I knew she weren't sorry, just like she weren't intimidated. I on the other hand, was curious as to what was happening so I ask "what's this about?", then Roxanna not paying attention scores another basket, when the ball comes near by I take it and put it under my arm. Trying to get Roxanna to take the situation a bit more serious I say to her "Ann, Deputy Bell is talking to you, it's rude what you've just done, you can't be rude to police", Roxanna rolls her eyes "fine" just 1 word answer, only usually happens when she is annoyed. I'm still beyond curious as to what this is, what has interrupted our game so I ask " so what's this about?" Roxanna wanting them gone, obviously getting fed up of the deputy trying to intimidate her and the presence of the police very rudely says "yeah man, I'm busy winnin 'ere" Roxanna missed a fair bit of schooling through the years, especially with her being on every sports team in the school so a lot of her words are shortened. Slightly embarrassed by how she has just spoke to the deputy I say in shock "Ann" "what?" she asks obviously not knowing just how rude she was being, or she did and just didn't care, and then words I never wanted to hear are said by deputy Bell "Roxanna Miles, you are under arrest for the murder of David Miles" he then places Roxanna in handcuffs. Roxanna is beyond angry "what? NO! Get offa me!" she says livid as she tries to fight against the deputy, "don't resist arrest miss, you'll add to the charge. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law" deputy bell carries on reciting Roxanna's rights as he takes her to his police car with the other officers while she carries on trying to fight against him. I follow them to the car, and watch as they forcefully put Roxanna in the car with a policeman sitting either side of her, Roxanna then looks out the window at me as the door gets closed. I look back her in shock, can my best friend really be capable of murder? Is this happening? I keep looking back at Roxanna in pure shock as the deputy gets into the drivers seat, and watch the car drive away with the sirens on.
