“Its… its Nyx… the traitors girl… she’s just… she’s…” Thorne found that he couldn’t even think the words he wanted to say about Nyx any more. He was physically incapable of saying that she was beneath him. What did it say about him if she was? After all, you judge a man on how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.
Henry smiled sadly, “I had wondered… You were always drawn to her.”
“But she can’t be the Luna of this pack; the pack won’t accept her. She doesn’t even have a shift, she’s weak…”
Henry cut in, “No, she is anything but weak. And what do you mean she doesn’t have a shift? Has her wolf not awakened?”
“That’s not the point”, Thorne growled
“No son, you are missing the point… if she indeed cannot shift, that is because of something we have done to her, it is not her fault or her weakness, it is a failing on our part, a failure to nurture the girl perhaps?”
Thorne looked thoughtful as he leaned his elbows on the desk and put his head in his hands. “Perhaps. Mother should have taken better care of her; she looks sick. I sent her to the medical centre.” Thorne sighed softly, “But that is beside the point, she still cannot be the Luna, the pack would never respect her… she cannot be my Mate”
“Have you asked her what she wants?” Henry enquired.
Thorne shook his head, “She’s staff at best, she’s not even part of the pack”
Henry looked disappointed in both himself and his son. “I should have stood stronger on that one”, he said softly as he scratched his head.
“And even if she wasn’t, she wouldn’t want me. Why would she want me after all the things I’ve said and done to her?”

——————————————— Flashback——————————————
Nyx was 8 years old, and she had been living in the pack house for maybe 2 months. It was late at night, everyone should have been asleep, when 12-year-old Thorne walked into the kitchen to find Nyx eating the leftovers from the bin.
“What are you doing? Are you seriously eating out of the bin, trash girl?”
Nyx tried to get away; she made a dash for the door, shaking her head, her face bright red.
Thorne wouldn’t let her escape. He couldn’t explain why, but he didn’t want her to run away from him. Instead, he caught her around the waist and threw her over his shoulder, carrying her down into the cellar. He locked her in the dark and damp storage room.
The next morning, Thorne overslept and didn’t let her out in time to set the table for breakfast.
When Margot eventually found Nyx, she made that windowless storage room Nyx’s bedroom.

“You won’t know anything until you talk to her”, Henry says softly
“f**k”, Thorne hits himself in the head “shes still sleeping in that tiny wine storage in the cellar, the one that got too small for your collection… It’s my fault”
“What on earth are you talking about? The girl sleeps in the cellar? Since when?” Henry demanded, standing from his desk and heading to the door, “Margot! Margot!”
Thorne sighs in resignation; he may as well tell his mother now anyway, she would find out one way or another.

Margot glides into the room, her hands on her hips. “There you two are hiding! Thorne, you need to get out into the garden, there’s a pretty little redhead I have a great feeling about”
“Enough, Margot. What’s this I hear about the traitor’s girl sleeping in the cellar?” Henry demanded.
Margot flushed a little “Why are we talking about that useless excuse for a wolf? Today is the day my son finds his Mate,” She brushed invisible crumbs from her dress as she looked between Thorne and Henry.
“No, Margot, we are discussing that child. Because that is what she is, a child, one I have stood by and let you work to death for far too long.”
“She’s only alive because of me, and she should show a little gratitude we let her grow up in this pack!” Marogt’s voice was rising in pitch and volume as she began to try to defend herself.
“She’s my Mate,” Thorne whispered softly
The words hit Margot like three slaps. The room fell silent for a few minutes. Henry glared at his Mate, unable to believe that she would force a child to live in the cellar. Margot stared at Thorne, waiting for him to laugh, and Thorne stared at the floor, the realisation hitting him that he had handled this situation like a f*****g child. How could he send her away instead of going with her?
“She’s in the clinic, I need to go to her before I f**k this up for good”, Thorne said, finally lifting his eyes to look up at his father.
Henry nodded, smiling like a proud father. He clapped his son on the shoulder “That’s a good choice, son. It’s time to own our mistakes and try to make it right. After all, the bond is a precious thing. Let’s go and find your Mate, boy.”
“No! You cannot accept a bond with that… that harlot… she’s probably slept with half of the pack in the hope that someone would love her!” Margot practically howled.
“You should have loved her, Mother! You should have taken her in properly, not as a f*****g slave! She is innocent of whatever sins her family committed! She was 3 years old for goddess sake!” Thorne replied, his eyes flashing luminous green, his wolf pushing to the surface. The Alpha power in his voice was almost choking in the room.
Margot could only stutter as her son and Mate left the room.
